Thank you for making this! I too like (trying) to create shots with miniatures for fun.. Whether it be GI Joe /action figures, or Sci-Fi miniatures.. But, i haven't found many videos online on working with the subject -- most tutorials and about working with real people, so this is a very welcome subject you are talking about. Glad to see there are others that are working the same constraints of budget, materials, and time.. Hope there will be other videos!
I just stumbled across your video. I really enjoyed it! Attempting to make shots /movies with store bought models /action figures is my hobby- so I really enjoyed your tips. Not a lot out there dedicated to this type of effort on a home /shoestring budget. I know the video is a few years old, so i hope you are still making them!

The animators on who framed Roger Rabbit used to say that the eye was drawn to complex shadows so they always took the opportunity to "knock the lamp" as it where.

2:38 How ironic then that they now and then (when exiting the space dock) used kind of the same effect (effectively a shallow depth of field) on the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. And it does give it a model-like effect which you just don’t want. Strange they did that.

Dec. 2017---Thanks for the video as I was wondering how everyone and their brother seem to make so amazing short movies with special effects. Of course, I barely understood a word you said. Understood the green board part, but what about the green sheet? Is this an ordinary green sheet or a special kind of one you'd buy somewhere that deals in this sort of thing? What about your pc as far as speed/memory, along with the program(s?) you use to mend everything together? I'm still using Windows Paint for basic stuff and going for a do or die attitude in learning how to use Gimp....and I've been dying every time?! Is your digital camera also acting as a video camera? Yeah, lots of questions from the 64 year old. Maybe you can use my questions as future videos...you know, how to create special effects for dummies. Model building I can do hands down as I've been building 'em for about 40 years. Getting back into it after 15 years, but going for zombie/apocalypse dioramas in 1/35th scale. Got around 16 different ideas and 3 are under construction right now. But think once I get some of these dioramas knocked out, looking at scratch building sci-fi ships. Sorry, but the Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. stuff has never gotten my attention. I'd prefer to make something unique and not some cookie cutter kit. Thanks again for the video.

I played it at .75, which seemed a little slow. I would appreciate a slower original delivery. The information is great, but I was having trouble absorbing it.
