In the 1850s, men hunted gaur with Muzzleloading rifles. Men died by the dozens. This dangerous sport attracted more adventurous men who brought more and more powerful rifles. And still men died by the dozens. By the time modern firearms evolved to the point where the gaur had little chance of surviving, they were officially protected. Now their biggest threat is from poaching, which is not regulated sport hunting.

Gaur is the Esteem Animal of our former Monarchy of Mysore, and also the new republic state Karnataka.
I see the decline in their numbers drastically over the decades.
I barely see a herd of 8-10 now a days, as i can recall from my childhood they used to roam the western Jungles in hundreds in a single herd.

My father told me a story of a Gaur who killed a Tiger. Tiger was pinned on the trunk of a giant fallen tree by the Gaur's head. The Gaur's head butting force was so strong it crushed the tiger's ribs and the chest area. Of course the tiger didn't die immediately. My dad said the Gaur pinned the tiger and must've stayed in that position for several days until the tiger was dead and started to smell of rot. That's how dad and his friends found out. Gaur had become skinny with lots of scar injuries and the tiger was slightly rotten.
    They are super strong!

There have been numerous cases of gaurs attacking and killing humans where I reside in western Maharashtra, proving that they are both magnificent and fierce. Since the natural grazing grounds do not supply enough green manure throughout the summer, they often intrude during that time and destroy crops in fields, which is where gaur human conflicts occur. I've observed them up close, and they typically do not attack until provoked.

One thing about the Gaur, they have terrible eyesight, and rely mostly on ears and nose for information. I worked in Parambikulam National Park in Kerala, S India in the mid-eighties, and on two occasions had close encounters with Gaur for just that reason. On the first occasion, towards dusk, I heard a herd of Gaur coming towards me in a patch of quite open woodland by a lake shore. I could soon see about 30 of them strolling in my direction, but they had no idea I was there. I climbed a handy tree and soon had wonderful views of the herd grazing directly below me. After about twenty minutes (by which time it was getting quite dark), they had moved on far enough for me to climb down and carry on. The second contact was with a single male. I thought he was going to pass me about 20 metres away, but he veered round straight towards me at a very gentle walking pace. Not wanting to attract his attention, I stood behind a tree and waited. Once he was within one metre of me, I thought I ought to do do something, so I waved my hat in his face and said “shoo!”. The moment while he decided what he should do seemed to last an age, but was only two seconds at most. He exhaled through his nostrils, turned round and walked back the way he had come. He clearly feared nothing and no-one! At the time, nor did I, but having seen this video, I won’t be so cavalier in future!

That is sad. It is the same in Thailand too, where I live. I feel so bad that only 100 years ago there were thousands of these animals roaming around in the forests and jungles, and humans have cut down their forest homes, hunted them to almost extinction, and allowed them to get sick and die form domestic cattle diseases. There are just too many humans now for large animals like this to survive long term. I often imagine what it would have been like with rhino, bears,, elephants, huge herds of wild water buffalo, gaur, banteng cattle, and deer., being hunted and stalked by tigers, leopards and wild dogs. And in the swamps, crocodiles, giant turtles, pelicans, storks and herons, and huge flocks of wild ducks, with vultures and eagles soaring in the sky and parrots and giant hornbills in the huge tall trees. It would have been like paradise. Now its polluted, degrades and getting build over with concrete and roads. I don't like what my human species is doing to the world.

It was thaught that the tiger attacked the beast because it was hungry, however it has been confirmed that the entire incident stems from an attempt to collect a gambling debt.

    What a MAJESTIC animal!
In an otherwise well-made video apparently with a real intent to produce quality content, it's BAD to see that 1st Tiger attack by Water Buffaloes being passed-off as Gaurs😏 Come'on guys, such elementary errors are NOT done. You should apologize to the viewers!
