How does the the 1NT opening hand distinguish our "pass because we can make 1NTX" from our "pass because we need to wrigggle into one of my 4 card suits" ? I presume that if our responding hand is stronger we will play in 1NTXX ?
Correct. When you are playing this system, with a strong hand that wants to play in 1NT, you pass, forcing partner to redouble, and then pass the redouble. The 1NT opener will not know which kind of hand you have (either intending to leave them in 1NTXX or intending to start showing 4-card suits) until you pass the redouble or bid your own suit.
