I know this video was a few years ago BUT trying to understand the opening bid of 1NT when you only had 14 HC points? I was always told DO NOT count distribution on opening and to open NT need at least 15+ HC points which this hand does not have. Appreciate feedback from anyone.
Hey there. It’s more of a modern method of upgrading really good 14 point hands. It’s less about strict high card points and more about trick taking potential. A flat 15 point hand is rarely as strong as a 14 point hand with a good quality 5 card suit.
Robots suck at defense, but in this case, the squeeze was real. Proper defense by west would be to keep all his diamonds and discard the As in the think hope that partner has the Ks.

If you were the defense how would you know when to cashthe ace of spades?
It's funny on this hand, because West may not know it's right to cash the Ace until it's too late.
Playing a second diamond after winning the H breaks up the squeeze.
