@tedbear4243 Yeah Oil Smoke smell of the old sulphur filled diesel fumes, and the wind up on those whistley turbo's. That era was something never to be repeated, we were so lucky to have grown in the 70's. Dad reckoned he loved having a 1300 on the Sundlander, they would run time off on sections north of Gympie heading to Bundaberg.

I cant get my head around as to why there continues to be no regular commuter services between Toowoomba and at least to Ipswich. Its pure lunacy. There were so many options - maybe not right up to Toowoomba - when I first started visiting the Lockyer Valley in the mid to late 1980's, and they fitted in quite well with so many general freights, fuel and grain at the time. Where as now, so few general freights and grain, a bit of coal, and many available paths for commuter services. Crazy stuff.

Good times, thank you for sharing. Sometimes I enjoy taking the Westlander from Laidley to Brisbane and return on a Thursday.

For a very long time Ive wanted to do the entire Westlander run, tho since the cut backs, with no on train sleepers etc, I'm a tad less enthusiastic
