I do like how he sung the bit before, but he needs to make that high note quieter. One of the reasons hitting that note can be hard is because you have to hit it softly and quietly. You can tell he tries not to belt it, but it comes out louder than the other notes he was singing right before that. He’s a great singer, but it’s not the best. That’s just my opinion though. If you think he’s the best then you do you. As long as we can both agree that Colm just can’t do Phantom well.

Also Caleb killed it, Carpenter is better as a louder, more outwardly intimidating role, like Javert, and let’s talk about Butler. Butler’s not really a singer, but he’s...OK. I just don’t think he has the ability at his level to really sell the Phantom, since it’s such a not-easy-ish role. The film just really isn’t that great of an adaptation, it sits in that valley with Les Miserables. There are a few decent parts, but it’s nothing special at best, and abhorrent at it’s worst.

Maybe this is just me, but I feel like Anthony Warlow is seriously underrated! There's just something about the tone of his voice that is really appealing to me. The others are awesome too (with the exception of Ben Crawford, who is still good, but his vibrato is a little much for me), but the skill in Warlow's voice just doesn't match up with the reception he's getting, at least to me.

Repost of (approximately) my previous comment:
Best are Norm Lewis, John Owen Jones, and Stig Rossen. They nailed the pianissimo. Many of the others just did the falsetto, and called it a day. Just because your falsetto is a little softer than your regular voice doesn’t mean it’s actually piano.
Edited to add that Peter Hofmann doesn’t sing in falsetto, but does make an attempt at piano. It’s a different take on the note than is usually done, and I’m honestly not a fan.

    • @BeeWhistler

Yeah, I had a problem with a lot of them because they sang high but not softly which is I guess what you just said only in my simple talk, lol. But thanks for putting it into better words. Also, I know there's better recordings of Michael Crawford singing it... he's unsurprisingly the first person I heard singing it and in the recordings he got it just right.

Your average Witchy child I was holding the position that these were the best pianissimo notes. That isn’t to say that there weren’t other good performances here, just that the guys I listed did (I think) the best when it came to the very specific criteria of making the note as soft and quiet as possible. My personal favorites are Ramon Karimloo and James Owen Jones. Two very different singers, very different styles, and yet both have that same ephemeral quality to them that I find to be so very intrinsic to this particular aria.

These are called sentences, instructions even. Have you ever had a conversation that went "close your eyesLEt.. your spirit start BREATH to soar". Acting, folks. I think the reason why I love Ramin's Phantom is that a lot of the other portrayals of that character focus on the "Phantom", a killer and monster. Christine wasn’t doing so hot that day cause right before he hit that pianissimo note, girl passed right out. My dude continued to sing while he was carrying her off the stage, and his voice didn’t waver. Like my guy bent down, picked her up, and carried her across the stage to the other side. Like what?? How??? It’s hard to sing that note and here he is doing that while carrying a girl across the stage. I’m sorry, but Anthony Warlow is a god. End of discussion.

The thing about pianissimo is you have to expand, and support MORE using the smallest amount of air, for proper cord closure. But it’s not a straining of expansion, it’s big like falling into the ocean, and the voice is a tiny gold coin in All that space.
The best part about this scene is that the technique matches the text.
“ close your eyes let your spirit start to soar”
    That’s pianissimo! That’s sustain!

Michael: The OG and has a very seductive and soft tone at the same time. Very well done.
Ben: A bit too deep pitch at first.
Norm: A still a bit deep but has a nice tune to it.
Geronimo: Really nice sway to his voice.
Han: Tiny slip up but he sounds so alluring.
Peter: Hit the notes well but his accent gets in the way of it.
Colm: Did well in Les Mis, and it really shows here too.
Anthony: A bit fast on the intro but came off stronger in the end.
Yang: Very interesting due to the fact that it's in another language.
John: Now this is close to Crawford but a bit too quiet at the end.
James: A bit of a belter, but he's still strong to a degree.
Young: Done very well for a language I can't understand.
    Stig: Sounds a bit depressed.
Caleb: Very good for an amateur
Peter: Can't understand him but once again has the right notes.
John: Slight vibration at first but came off strong at the end.
Hugh: His slight belting combined with his voice makes it very close to perfecting it.
Ben: The first few notes are swung but it adds his own special touch to it.
Earl: A bit too quiet, I could hear the guy coughing.
Brad: Once again the ending is a bit quiet. Not asking for too much just a little bit louder.
Gerard: NO JUST NO! There's no passion and it sounds like he's bored. It's very clear he's not trained for ALW songs. What were the filmmakers and ALW thinking?
Ramin: Now this is what a perfect Phantom is. Crawford originated the role but Ramin's voice combined with his belting at the beginning and then the fall into gentleness at the end just perfected it.

Did anyone else think that Geronimo's "soar" sounded off? Like sound technically ? Maybe it's just me
Earl was very delicate, that was nice.
Gerard vocals are just... ugh. I could listen to him all day. But I know his "soar" was played with a little so Ramin definitely takes home the trophy for me. He is just incredible always. Live, recorded, he is perfect. and his vowels and placement is un-freaking-believable!!!!!

Forgive me, I'm not an expert on music or singing, but I know what I like. After listening to all of these fabulously talented singers twice, I made a list of what it was that made me make my choices. 1. Full voice - when it gets to the "Close your eyes..." part, I liked it better with full voice, not high whispering. 2. Vibrato - some singers use vibrato for the full "Soar" note, others sing it steady and use vibrato at the end. I like melodic vibrato for the whole note. 3. Holding the note as long as they can - I like it better when they can hold it a loooooong time. 4. Power - I want to HEAR the "Soar" note, not have it whispered. 5. Just a personal preference, but those who go right for the "Soar" note at correct pitch sound like they are straining to get there, but those who go in slightly low in pitch and then quickly build up to correct pitch sound so much better to me.
The 3 who meet all those criteria are: 1. Ramin 2.Colm. 3. Peter Joback.
As for who had the purest "Soar" note, regardless of everything else: Brad Little.

Ramin es el unico que enseña este carrusel de sentientos y el pianissimo lo incorpora como si fuera el sentimiento que se le escapa, no busca el pianissimo como nota musical. Bravo Ramin💞y Sierra su mejor Christine.

It's just bad direction and casting from Joel Schumacher, ironically enough, the movie was in development hell since '89 because they couldn't find someone to play the phantom and Christine, at first they want Crawford and Brightman to reprise their roles, Brightman was divorcing Webber so that couldn't happen, they couldn't get Hugh Jackman because of scheduling conflicts, almost had Antonio Banderas but fans didn't want that, so I guess they said fuck it in the end

Love this, as it separates the true artists from the "performers". pp means very soft...and it would be soo SOOO hard to sing at the top of range, supported and NOT show it off with more volume. Some do it masterfully! Some don't quite get the idea of "dynamics", but it's different interpretation, I'm sure.
