My first mow I used my thumbs to control the speed control, found that if I adjusted it upwards I can drive with the palm of my hand. Much more comfortable. Good vid
Thank you so much for this demonstration. My 33 year old Honda self-propelled mower finally gave up the ghost. What an awesome machine. I dreaded looking at the new ones since I am now in my 70's. I read a review from an 80 year old man who said he loved this mower, so that sold me on getting this one. I'm a 5'4' 123 lb woman so I was worried about handling it, but it is a dream. I have never bonded with a piece of equipment until I owned a Honda mower. Your excellent tutorial saved me from reading the manual which I hate doing.
I picked up this exact unit. What a beauty. Works like charm. Bought from a Honda store (they sell mostly motorbikes and skidoos). They were awesome to deal with. Gives me confidence that if/when I have problems down the road I have someone to go to who knows what they are talking about (and has some skin in the game). I'm the kind of person who almost always gets buyers remorse when I buy something a little more expensive, but not in this case.
Thanks. I got a few mowings in before the cold and it’s a much quieter machine than my TroyBilt and the engine barely vibrates, once I had to check to see if the blades were actually spinning.
Thanks, I just order the Toro AWD recycler with the 163cc motor from Home Depot. Our 2007 John Deere JS-40 mower trans failed after I spend $135 on parts. After watching several videos I'm going to purchase this Honda & cancel the Toro. Thank you.
My prior Honda's self propelled feature finally gave out, so tomorrow its off to Home Depot for this unit. I like the 'new' feature that keeps the engine running but stops the blades so I can empty the bag and not have to restart the engine each time. But always started with one pull.
I bought it at lowes at a discount price I ran it and the blade was not moving thank you for the explanation on the video hopefully it helps. 1 question the blades is the set the way the blade is over the other blade on the mower.
The blades won’t spin until you depress down the dead man switch, see the directions. The mower has two blades that sit on top of one another. The configuration is similar to the link below. They fit together snug. I usually take a picture of them before I replace so I know how they fit. m.ruclips.net/video/UnbBYaO25Gg/видео.html
You do not have to use the self-propelled and can mow without. I will say though, if you have even a moderate hill on your lawn, you will want the self-propel feature. I have two on my lawn and its very helpful. I use self-propel during the entire mow as well, mainly to propel myself.
It turns fine for me, the rear-wheel drive self-propelled took some time to get used to and I prefer front-wheel drive but I've had no major issues. My front yard under the maple tree is very bumpy and it hasn't bottomed out. I keep my deck no lower than 2.5"
So I am a bit confused with the “self-propelled” do you have to press the grey button/gas pedal for you move/cut your lawn or can you just push it yourself?
Mulching the clippings leaves them on the lawn which allows the clippings to help fertilize the lawn and alleviates the need for bagging clippings. When mulching the lawn you usually barely notice the clippings on the lawn unless you are cutting it when it’s very long.
@@steveva7591 Actually it was something really stupid. A rock had jammed between the belt and pulley so when you engaged it the motor just bogged down and of course the wheels didn't turn. I live in a sandy area with lots of small round rocks
I cant add a picture to this comment but I get 1/2" to 1" long cuttings from the mower. Ive mowed twice this spring already and I haven't had clumps on the lawn, even in the thick areas. As far as leaves on the lawn, it mulches them to bits on areas of the lawn where its thick and the stand is high.
I just changed the oil/spark plug and blades on mine yesterday and noticed it is a bit hard to start until the cylinder begins to fire. I’m not sure what causes this but if yours is extremely difficult, the pull cord may be tangled in the wheel. If the engine is low on oil, that can make it harder as well
I am thinking about replacing my 4 year old HRR with this. It is a great mower, but the rear wheels lock up when pulled back. I read that the new 2 way ratchet on the drive axle fixes this. That update, plus everything else, makes me want to pull the trigger.
@@algorel4763 I love the super recyclers too but the only one with a Honda is the one without the blade stop. A Honda engine is very important to me, and I love the blade stop.
Andy's Shop watch out about the new Honda 200 cc. I have one on a new HRX. 4-5 pulls to start. Honda refuses to fix! More emissions, bad auto choke. The chondas are better now.
That is nice but out of stock and a bit out of my price range. Plan on getting the model that's a step down I think its pretty much the same minus the blade stop. Even that was a bit out of my price range but id rather get a Honda versus a craftsman that's not much less while being way worse. I just wish the Honda was AWD but at least its RWD versus craftsmans FWD
@@steveva7591 what hurt will using 91 octane do to the engine? I use 93 octane with 1 oz. of marvel mystery oil in 2 1/2 gal. Of gas. Engine runs cleaner using 93 oct. also use amsoil small engine oil 10-30.
The new Honda mower HRN216VKA is very disappointing. Anyone have it? Deck too light. The lift isn’t there like with the old heavy steel deck on the previous model. Having to mow same spots 2 - 3 times. Motor feels weaker now. I don’t think it can be used as a commercial mower like the previous version. Looks like Honda lighten everything to deal with the transmission / wheel gear issues from the past.
About To I have not used previous Honda mowers so I can’t relate in that regard. The only issue of sorts i’ve noticed with this mower is that I need to keep the blade/self-propel speed higher for a better mulch of clippings and leaves and overall better cut. It’s tempting to keep the speed and noise down but the mower cuts better at about 50% or higher
SteveVA seems to me like the blades are not as sharp or maybe lighter also. I’m going to try an old set. New blades seem dull also. Mower just feels very cheap. Everybody does this, just didn’t expect Honda to do it.

Try reading it in your spare time anyway Nancy, it’s just a good idea to do so.

These new Honda mowers are beautiful. Both the HRN and HRX.
Thanks for the video. Went ahead today and purchased this model and will be selling my toro.

You won't get that at home depot. Have to go to lowes for the 216 with blade stop and throttle control

Good review
I bought a used HondaHRN216VYYA for $75 very good mower
If I wanted to mow without engaging the self-propel feature, is that possible? Thank you.

How well does it turn? I have several things to mow around in my yard. Would you recommend for a bumpy yard or would it bottom out?

You can push it yourself if you'd like but to propel, you push down the gray paddle switch with your thumbs
What kind of grass do you have? I have zoysia and wanted to know if it will cut my zoysia.
I have zoysia on one side of my yard and the rest is fescue/bluegrass. This cuts zoysia fine.
What does mulch do exactly or why would you switch it to mulch . First time home buyer and I wanna get one
Mulching the clippings leaves them on the lawn which allows the clippings to help fertilize the lawn and alleviates the need for bagging clippings. When mulching the lawn you usually barely notice the clippings on the lawn unless you are cutting it when it’s very long.
I like the mower, however my self propelled stopped working about 15 cuts in. Researching how to fix it now.
Sorry to hear that, I hope you get it fixed soon

good to hear!
Can you use the self propell to move the mower without engaging the blades?
Yes, you can.
I want one! Only thing it lacks for me is a deck wash nozzle
That One Ford Guy Yes, that is one feature it lacks
And a side discharge!
I wonder how easy it would be to add one yourself. Drill a circle. Weld/JB Weld a fitting to attach a hose, touch up paint, and presto
Thanks bud that really helped me out
When you get a chance can you show us how well it mulches 👍

No side discharge option right?
it's so hard to pull my start cord. What can I do to make it easy to start? My mower's hardly 6 months old.
I just changed the oil/spark plug and blades on mine yesterday and noticed it is a bit hard to start until the cylinder begins to fire. I’m not sure what causes this but if yours is extremely difficult, the pull cord may be tangled in the wheel. If the engine is low on oil, that can make it harder as well
Very good demo.👍👍☘
I wanted to buy this, but the adjustment only going up to 4 bothers me. I like to cut my grass on 6. I’ll have to think about this
4 is about the highest I would ever go. 6 is a long lawn!
@@steveva7591 I live in New Orleans and the heat is extreme. So the longer the lawn the healthier it is.
That thing's a 3 in 1, what's the 3rd function?
You can either mulch the clippings, bag them or have them come out of the back chute.
Does it click when rolling it? Is it normal?
I dont hear a click with mine; at least nothing loud.
Can you engage the self propel with the blade stop on ?
Yes you can, it can be propelled with the blade off

If it is variable speed how can it be to fast?
Only at full speed does it move pretty quick. Over the years I have gotten used to it though and it seems now it doesnt move as fast.

is it suppose to roll backwards easy without dragging wheels
It rolls backwards unless the self-propel is engaged.
