Midazolam! Why John Campbell is a DISGRACE to the nursing profession.

  • Medical professionals in the UK and around the world did their absolute best for their patients during the pandemic, but Covid can be a deadly disease, particularly in those who are unvaccinated.
    Providing palliative care and ensuring that people can pass peacefully and not in pain and distress is something that all compassionate medical professionals support. Trying to twist this vital care into something else just to get views from antivaxxers is simply disgraceful. And yet that is what Dr John Campbell has done in his Midazolam video. Dr Susan Oliver and Cindy the dog go back to the science to show that his claims are absurd and abhorrent.

      For those who don't know, Dr. OLIVER IS NOT PART OF THE CONSPIRACY. She makes these videos under duress. CINDY OLIVER, however, is deep in the rabbit hole. (It's in the breed, it's just their instinct.) Incredible! Does this show that nurses don't need to major in research to any extent as part of their training/education? How can a nurse actually believe this stuff if they remotely understood any of the data...never mind how he would actually believe colleagues to be capable of this!

    • @Grim_Beard
      @Grim_Beard 21 день назад +8

      Nurses, like medical doctors, are practitioners not researchers. They get pretty minimal research methods training - less than, say, a first-year psychology undergraduate. Campbell _should_ have substantially improved his research knowledge and skills when working towards his doctorate, but apparently he didn't.

    Some context for the medications described, all of which are used as required (not automatically) for symptom control in good quality palliative care:
    Midazolam is used for agitation.
    Antimuscarinics are used for respiratory secretions (common in people succombing to respiratory infections)
    Haloperidol is an antipsychotic but for palliative care is used in low doses for anti sickness effect. Higher doses help with delerium but it isn't clear from the video what the prescribing indications were.
    My best friend and wife are both GPs. Covid tore through care homes with devestating effect. One dementia care home locally lost 27/30 residents, most of whom could not be certified as covid due to a lack of covid testing, contrary to conspiracy theorist claims. It isn't surprising that GP prescribing of end of life care drugs increased. JC could ask some pallitive care doctors or GPs for their perspectives, but he won't. Clearly his wish for investigation for this correlation doesn't extend to asking anyone who provided care to patients.

    On the title page of the paper (time 4:30), it's stated that the article was submitted on Jan 20 and accepted on Jan 25. Obviously peer review was not done. Many other papers in this journal are similar, with 5 to 10 days between submission and acceptance.
    I have contacted the journal, asking them how they can claim to be peer reviewed when many -- and perhaps all -- of the papers are not peer reviewed. So far, no response.

    • @Marco-it2mr
      @Marco-it2mr 20 дней назад +6

      "Obviously peer review was not done"
      Well, theoretically it can be done in such a short time frame - there are some journals that can do this with some papers, especially if they know the paper is coming (peer reviewers in place), it is considered enormously important, and the authors are very competent. See the first paper on PCR of SARS-CoV2 by Corman et al.
      "So far, no response."
      How surprising! /sarc

    • @stewarttrickett3033
      @stewarttrickett3033 20 дней назад +5

      @@Marco-it2mr
      A typical round of peer review usually includes the following steps:
      1. Editor reads manuscript to see if it's suitable to proceed.
      2. Editor finds peer reviewers.
      3. Peer reviewers perform and return their evaluations.
      4. Editor reads reviews and makes recommendation of what to do with the paper.
      5: A decision of what to do next is made, often by a more senior editor.
      6. If revision is needed, authors edit and return revised manuscript plus point-by-point responses to reviews.
      Typically two or three rounds of review are needed.
      This means the whole process typically takes a few months. Five days is nearly impossible. That most of the papers (from the few monthly issues I examined) were accepted within 10 days of submission tells me that peer review wasn't being done, as no journal can review that many papers that fast. The only question remaining for me is why isn’t this man called before the medical council and brought to task for his regular misinterpretation of data and dangerous influence over the anti vax gullible. Such influence may well cost lives in future but he has the audacity to accuse serving nurses of illegal euthanasia too.
    How far over the line does he need to venture before he is stripped of his doctorate, his confirmation of credibility.
    In my own profession such rogue misrepresentations would not be tolerated without official sanction.
    Brilliantly and so clearly dissected Susan. So interesting as a lead anti vaxer he presents graphs which destroy his own arguments and instead show just how effective multi vaccinations have been in saving lives, something which logical sensible people have realised for a long time now.
    But not apparently if you make money by representing a minority rogue view contrary to the vast majority of true medical doctors and practitioners who had to live through the awfulness of it at its worst.

      "the medical council "- unfortunaely, they have nothing to say about a nurse. And the nursing council doesn't seem to be too interested to do anything, because he's not an active nurse.
      "How far over the line does he need to venture before he is stripped of his doctorate, his confirmation of credibility."
      This discussion is actually quite old: there are no clear professional rules regarding revoking PhD degrees, because a PhD degree is not a profession. You can have a MD degree, but not be allowed to practice medicine, because you do not have a license. If you cannot get a license due to various forms of misconduct or malpractice, you still retain your MD.

    The gmail address, and the 'level' of the website, not a good signs. I wonder where all the 'publication fees' are going, doesn't seem that the website or a server.
    Also out of interest I clicked on one of the recent publications 10.33140/MCR.09.03.02 a 'power point article'! Well the number of PowerPoints for lectures etc I have made I'm pretty sure with enough 'investment' I could get my 'publication record' into the 1000s and a Professorship (in the UK we call them Chairs) is then an absolute certainty, well until someone actually checks out the journal!

There’s no point in waiting for a doctor, whether in hospital or in the community, to prescribe such medication when it’s actually needed as that would be too late to relieve suffering. It happens in other circumstances as well, for instance a person who has a compromised immune system and is likely to develop pneumonia regularly will have an anticipatory prescription for antibiotics at hand such that they can get the medication before it becomes critical.

I was the last of her near family still alive and sat with her all day and sometimes all night for 10 days as she panicked when I was leaving Although she was 103 she had all her faculties and had a good idea that she was dying. Here just for Buzznarrownind is a quote from Plato on ignorance
    “A man may truly say that ignorance is a third case of crimes. Ignorance, however, may be conveniently divided… into two sorts: There is simple ignorance, which is the source of lighter offenses, and double ignorance, which is accompanied by a conceit of wisdom; and he who is under the influence of the latter fancies that he knows all about matters of which he knows nothing. This second kind of ignorance, when possessed of power and strength, will be… the source of great and monstrous crimes…”

      A healthy society should strive to help all its members reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully, not relegate some to a permanent underclass. Providing quality education, mental health support, and economic opportunities benefits everyone by expanding the pool of capable, productive citizens. However, I get this feeling that in some countries, there is a definite imbalance that's then exported via social media on a global scale.

      I'm a little jaded by such lists, although they do have value if they introduce Time's readers to people they should take note of.
      In particular the political slant of the magazine is reflected in the easy combination of politicians and rich donors with scientists and others who work selflessly. Unless I am missing someone they pick and choose what counts as health, ignoring the ongoing climate emergency, gun violence, homelessness, etc. Pursuing a challenge to the view "that people are wired to focus on when things go wrong and when they don’t work" they omit the thing which stands out as having gone wrong: the spread of medical misinformation. Indeed it is Time's own watchwords of "Trust" and "impact" that have assumed the malignant forms of "Grift" and "Clout".
