  • Recently, Dr John Campbell started a video by saying he was going to respond to some criticism of a previous video about excess deaths in Australia in 2021 that he had made with Senator Renick.
    In this video, Dr Susan Oliver and Cindy the dog will go back to the science and explain why his response was just more misinformation.

    The death rate remained low in the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
    Lauren Moran, Director of Mortality Statistics at the ABS, said, “There were 171,469 deaths registered in 2021 at a rate of 507 deaths per 100,000 people. This was 3.2 per cent higher than 2020 but lower than the 2019 pre-pandemic death rate (522 per 100,000).”
    Heart disease was the leading cause of death in 2021, with dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease), stroke, lung cancer and chronic lower respiratory diseases making up the top five causes. Heart disease was the leading cause of male deaths while dementia was the leading cause among females.

      This is on 2023 excess in the US which are at pre-pandemic levels. Wonder if Campbell will make a video about this? Pasted in from Katelyn Jetelina's latest update:
      Since late January 2023, excess deaths have reached pre-pandemic levels. This has been a massive reprieve.
      I am surprised; I always assumed that we would need to increase the excess death baseline given we added a new threat to our repertoire. But, for now, we don’t. Perhaps this is due to a combination of things:
      *You can’t die twice.* COVID-19 has killed the most medically fragile people over the last three years, and those premature deaths lead to fewer deaths today. In this case, excess deaths could rebound in coming years;
      *Population-level immunity.* Hybrid immunity is holding up greater than we expected, even among older Americans;
      *Relative.* COVID-19 deaths are so small relative to the entire burden of death that it’s immaterial. It’s a fraction of all daily deaths and within the margin of error.

Immunity from natural infection affords a robust response if exposed to exactly the same virus again, but is not so some with different variants. Immunity induced by vaccination provides a broader response, especially from T cells.
      The scientists knew this of course. The issue was that the authorities wanted a simple message and just pushed for vaccination. Also it was difficult to test and confirm natural infection and incorporate it into the vaccination program. Not everyone who is infected produces good acquired immunity. It was just easier only to count vaccinations.

      Influenza badly, affects the young and the very old, so these groups are vaccinated. Each year the formulation is changed, because the virus mutates. There are two mechanisms, point mutations, where the virus does not change much (shift) and reassortment (jump). The genome of the virus is divided into eight segments. If the host is infected with two different viruses segements can be swapped between the two viruses. The result is that the circulation virus is very different from previous viruses and it is difficult to "guess" what should be in the vaccine that is deployed for the next Flu season.
      Usually the middle age groups have been exposed to viruses similar to the circulating virus, which means that they have some cross-protection and do not need a vaccine. In the 2017/2018 season the virus jumped, by reassortment and the Flu vaccine offered much less protection than usual (30 - 40%), it fell to not much more tha 10%. So the young and old groups were less protected. The middle age group was also not protected because the circulating virus was different from what they had previously been exposed.
      The overall result was that deaths were doubled.

    I have zero medical (statistical) experience, but I find it interesting that they remove outliers from the data series when estimating the model. In any case, with these adjustments they're erring on the side of overestimating excess deaths, so no grand conspiracy, etc.
    From the methodology section:
    "By down-weighting outliers it aims to fit the model to patterns of mortality that are expected to occur in the absence of an epidemic. This robust regression down-weights the influence of extreme observations (outliers) and is applied to a seven-year baseline time series (weeks commencing on a Monday). Some additional adjustments were made to extreme outliers, for example the 2017 influenza season."

      Covid contrarians and the antivax campaign deliberately use economics analysis rather than actuarial analysis to downplay covid. The economics statisticians they use don't like messy real human condition scenarios cluttering up their pristine, dead, pecuniary universe. The Auditors of of Reality in Pratchett's Discworld come to mind at this point as oddly parallel. They have a place in the Discworld multiverse in making sure that atoms spin, and gravity works, but would be devastating to Life itself in times of any health or climate emergency if they were given any influence in combating them.

Pfizer received the biggest fine in US history as part of a US $2.3 billion dollar plea deal with federal prosecutors for mis-promoting medicines (Bextra, Celebrex) and paying kick-backs to compliant doctors. 2:39 Dr Susan, John has misinterpreted the Australian Bureau of statistics data twice now. I thought had he portrayed it wrong but no he described it the same as he did with the Senator the day before.
    So, when he says in October 2021 there was 7,129 excess deaths this is a lie. Surely he knows that is the ACCUMULATIVE figure from the beginning of 2021 and the difference as the months progress ( ie. the difference in numbers of reported deaths between 2020 and 2021 ).
    He reads it on both videos as if those are that months excess not the sum increasing for the year (2021).
    Now, there is no evidence here at all for any excess as the figures in 2019 WERE THE SAME AS 2021.
    There is a large accumulative ie 7, 129 by October 2021 as deaths dropped sharply in 2020.
    I'm shocked I just noticed this. No wonder he does not add a link to that data on both videos.
    His viewers think in October 2021 alone for that month there was 7,129 excess deaths, it is completely interpreted wrong.
    Even at the top of the sheet someone has scribbled overall mortality and he chose to still read it wrong.

This is a reason why I stopped paying attention to his channel even before he started changing his stance. He cherry picks any data out there without providing full context all the time - anybody can do that to 'prove' virtually any point that they want. I watched and read so much of the public information while we were in our lockdown period - enough to know that he was blatantly misrepresenting so much of it, or obtaining his 'information' from what everyone here knows are sensationalist tabloids. All that exposed Dr John for me. I wish he had stuck to what he did best - providing good, helpful and practical health advice as he did early in the pandemic before he started becoming increasingly political from one extreme to the other.

    Wow, Campbell is so misleading at 2:35. So he's got a table which someone has typed out for him. He copies it so that the row descriptors are cut off. The number of deaths are for each month. But the bottom line isn't either the difference of 2021 and the average of the preceding 6 years, or the difference between 2020 and 2021 for each month, but the cumulative of that month plus the preceding months. So a glance at that suggests that for each month as you go through the year that they are increasing month on month. Clearly someone has decided to deliberately present it this way to give a very false impression. They know impressions count. Were they hoodwinking Campbell, knowing that he'd not question it, or was he in on it?
    And again, they have typed Australian Bureau of Statistics at the top to give the impression that this graph has just been copied off an ABS document, not that it is one they have done themselves to deliberately misrepresent.

    • @lindaward
      @lindaward 10 месяцев назад +6

      From the ABS Xs Mort ality report:
      "Throughout this report, counts of deaths are compared to an average number of deaths for previous years. In this report, data for 2021 is compared to an average number of deaths recorded over the 5 years from 2015-2019 as was the case in previous publications. Data for 2022 is compared to a baseline comprising the years 2017-2019 and 2021. 2020 is not included in the baseline for 2022 data because it included periods where numbers of deaths were significantly lower than expected. Counts of deaths for 2015-2021 are included in the baseline datacubes of the data downloads section of this report."
