    I'd move Frank and Alice Longbottom up on the list. They faced down Voldemort 3 times and survived. They only lost when they were caught unawares by 4 of the strongest death eaters that existed. That's certainly better than anything Dawlish has ever been able to accomplish.

    Apparently Kingsley Shacklebolt deemed everyone who survived the Battle of Hogwarts to be fully qualified to become auror for their strength of character and skills. If they managed to survive a battle against so many adult death eaters, they were certainly overqualified in concerns to the minimum requirements to undergo training as auror. I bet the following years after the battle sees many new aurors in service.

    if you´re unsure about the capabilities of either moody or crouch jr. think about this: moody is said to be responsible for about half of the prisoners being in azkaban and crouch jr. took this guy down with the help of pettigrew (a guy even schoolchildren can beat) and moody was said to be paranoid about constant vigilance or being attacked so even a surprise attack shouldn´t give crouch that much of an advantage

    • @owentalbert6602
      @owentalbert6602 Год назад +3

      People always rail on Pettigrew, but I really think he’s actually underrated. Sure he was a bit of a coward, but he wasn’t a weak wizard in his prime. Not only was he an animagus, he was also adept at potion making and dark magic. Even after going insane from prolonged transfiguration, Wormtail was able to successfully cast Avada Kadavra many times with little effort. People don’t realize how difficult that spell is to cast, not just anyone can do it. It takes a lot of passion, hatred, and magical power to perform successfully.

  • @micheleminor1106
    @micheleminor1106 4 года назад +134

    Alaster Moody was a gifted Auror though after the first wizarding war it did sound like he suffered from PTSD and had to resign as an Auror for that reason. Tina Goldstein was very likely skilled in occulmency since her little sister was a natural legilimens and she didn't want her little sister to know everything that she was thinking. Would it have been unusual in the 1920s for women to become Aurors since most young women at that time were like Queenie working in an office job until marriage when they would quit their jobs and become housewives.

    • @noorykorky5056
      @noorykorky5056 4 года назад +7

      I do not think that it would have been unusual. We see that the Wizarding World (when it came to Witches and Wizards at least) were not as discriminatory as their muggle counterparts. For instance, in the U.S. during the 1920's, Black people were treated quite poorly, but in the Wizarding World, the President of MACUSA was a Black woman. It is proven that they definitely did not discriminate against women (as in witches) like muggles either. That is why I do not think Tina's post was unusual at all.

    • @noorykorky5056
      @noorykorky5056 4 года назад +5

      But I appreciated the fact that in the Wizarding World, discrimination existed, but targets discriminated against were not the same as targets of muggle discrimination. The reason for that is the fact that I would not have believed Witches and Wizards were humans, if they did not discriminate against others (whether that been other humans, as in muggles, or magical beings/creatures).

      Well, Graves was not an average Auror. That is my problem with this list. Graves should have been on the list, not an "honorable mention", and his place should have been right after Alastor Moody and Kingsley Shackelbolt. President Picquery, who was quite an intelligent and talented witch herself, never even remotely questioned Graves's extraordinary/a bit out of place powers, such as when "he" arrested Newt, Jacob, and Tina and confiscated Newt's suitcase without a wand and not uttering a single word. I know it was really Grindelwald, but still, he was far too strong not to be on this list.

I don't think there's much doubt that Kingsley is the strongest in the series (and probably 3rd strongest overall after Voldemort and Dumbledore), but Moody was the Auror's auror. Comparing him to Scrimgeour is tough, but I'd give the edge to Kingsley for being much younger.

    • @CulturalMarxist4985
      @CulturalMarxist4985 4 года назад

      Kingsley's probably the most impressive auror. He took on two Death Eaters at once in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and he was actually able to hold off Voldemort in the Battle of the Seven Potters, while Moody was killed. Maybe when Moody was in one piece, he was as good, but Kingsley has better feats in the books.

      Theseus may have been at the same level as Tina, but Graves was definitely more powerful than her. I mean, President Picquery didn't seem remotely surprised when "he", without a wand, casually caught and arrested Tina, Newt, and Jacob and impounded Newt's case-- all wandless, non-verbal magic. I know that it was not actually him as Grindelwald was posing as him (and that is why I put the word "he" in quotation marks), but still, the fact that President Picquery was not even remotely surprised says a lot (about both Graves's power and Grindelwald's).

    I think Moody should be at the bottom of this list. He was killed easily by Voldemort, defeated by Barty Crouch Jr. (who spent most of his life either in Azkaban or under the imperious curse), and during the fight in the ministry he went down really fast. He also lost his eye, chunk of nose, and leg in 1 fight. Probably one of the only actual fights he was in during his career as an Auror. I’d judge all his reputation based off his investigative intelligence. We don’t really know what all he did as his time as an Auror, other than arrest a great amount of wizard and witches, and he demonstrates in the books that he is an unskilled dueler.
    Id rank Amelia Bones #1. Fudge mentioned her in book 6 when speaking to the Prime Minister.
    “We think that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named may have murdered her in person because she was a very gifted witch and all the evidence was that she put up a real fight.”

      You are mentioning Moody only after his prime and after the 1st wizarding war. He captured Bellatrix Lestrange who was One of the most powerful Death Eaters, She was able to capture and torture the Longbottoms. Kill Sirius Black and Hold her own in a 3v1 Against Luna Ginny and Hermione which were all very gifted witches. The only reason he got his ass kicked from Voldemort is because Mundongus Fletcher got one good look at Voldemort and decided to Apparate away. He never had the time to do anything else to Voldemort. He fell in the ministry on a 2v1 After his prime. You cannot blame him for all his work on the field and still deciding to fight in the Second wizarding war. Batty Crouch was A smart and powerful wizard. It is said that Moody put up a damn good fight. It was once again a 2v1 When moody was no longer in his prime. Amelia bonds was never a Auror but Head of magical law enforcement. She was a super gifted which but I would not place her above Kingsley or Scrimgeuor.

      What did he really "do"? Okay, he and Wormtail managed to subdue Moody when Moody was apparently half-asleep (and definitely past his prime) -- he impersonated Moody (admittedly with great skill and cunning) for quite a few months; he killed his father (who was extremely weakened by then), turned him into a bone, and buried him. But we never really get to see him in action in any kind of real fight or wand-to-wand confrontation (Dumbledore certainly made short work of him after realizing who he was). He seemed to me like a spoiled privileged kid with an attitude, getting revenge on his father for not having raised him right. Over-ego'd punks like that are a dime a dozen in U.S. prep schools and Ivy League colleges.

    • @Macallion
      @Macallion 3 года назад +5

      @@jazzmanchgo Moody was past his prime, sure, but wasn't weak by any means. I doubt Wormtail would have been much help. Corrupted the goblet - first and only person to do it. Impersonated a highly trained veteran auror flawlessly, which means doing everything Moody could do without issue, giving a perfect impersonation that fooled people he'd known for decades. At least two human transfigurations, at least one of which was wordless. In the movieverse, he even affected the enchanted ceiling in the Great Hall and the enchantments on the school are not weak. And he did this all while developmentally at age 19, barely past graduation and with somebody else's wand. Most would have struggled with the transfiguration alone with their own wand, nevermind somebody else's. It's kind of between the lines and yeah, there's an ego there, but based on the information we have, he was actually kind of insanely good at it. Dumbledore - especially when approaching from behind - was still better, because he'd had decades more without restriction to grow. That and he's just Dumbledore. The last few scenes were pure plot convenience.

    I think the problem with power scaling in Harry Potter is that, while Rowling is good at showing rather than telling when it comes to a lot of things, showing off how powerful characters are isn't one of them. There are obvious exceptions. Major characters like the Trio, Dumbledore, and Voldemort all clearly display their abilities, which makes sense since they're often the main focus of the story and we largely see it through Harry's eyes. However, a lot of the other characters tend to get Worf'd in the worst way. I think Dawlish is a fantastic example. We're *told* about how good he is at all of these things, but the only times we ever really see him are when he's faced with things well beyond a normal wizard's ability. And without actually seeing how good he is, him being defeated doesn't hold nearly the kind of impact that the author was probably hoping for. It just makes him seem lackluster in practice, regardless of what we've been told about him.
    For comparison, take a character like Vegeta in early DBZ. When he's introduced, he's depicted as this nearly unstoppable force. His subordinate crushes most of the heroes that we've already seen display their skills throughout DB, and when that subordinate isn't strong enough for the more powerful heroes, Vegeta dispatches him and begins handling things personally, at which point he displays his own powers in battle. The heroes have to throw everything they have at him, and are still only able to scrape out a stalemate at best, with both sides retreating to recover. In the next arc, we see Vegeta face several enemies that are shown (albeit through the increasingly lazy and less useful "power level" concept) to be as strong as some of the heroes were in the previous arc, and Vegeta dispatches them with the same ease that he did those heroes. We repeatedly see, through action rather than exposition, how dangerous and powerful he is. So when he suddenly gets curbstomped by a new group of villains, it catches the viewers off guard and they can instantly recognize how dangerous the new characters are, because they've already seen firsthand how strong the one who lost was. If we had never seen Vegeta prior to the fights where he's defeated, and had just seen characters saying "Oh, he's totally this super strong and skilled fighter," then their words might lend *some* weight, but ultimately it wouldn't have nearly the same impact when he loses. DBZ is hardly the epitome of skilled writing, but that's something it tended to do well, particularly in the early arcs of the series.
    That's what Rowling fails to do with a lot of supporting characters that are supposed to be super impressive. She tells us that they're awesome by having people like Voldemort or Dumbledore compliment their abilities, but she very rarely shows it to the audience, and then she has a stronger character easily dispatch them. Sometimes entirely off screen. Sure, being complimented by characters like that holds some weight, but even a rookie who actually shows what they do leaves more of an impression than someone who has repeatedly been called a master only ever being depicted as the loser. That's my take on it, anyway.

    (Just some constructive criticism, no harm intended so please don't take it in a bad way):
    Something that I would change about the language used in these theory videos is to say "In my opinion" or "due to these facts, I believe" as otherwise what is being said comes across very matter of factly and as if it is official and truth, theories are meant to be about drawing conclusions from evidence and I think it is important to mention that, any theorist is drawing conclusions, most of the time without conclusive evidence as that is what theorising is about, pushing boundaries and expanding thoughts. I just think that sometimes it is important to mention that in the language because there is no pottermore or wizarding world ranking of the 5 most powerful aurors, it is a theory.
    Sorry if this sounds harsh, basically I would suggest that you just change some of the language used in your videos for future reference, I love your content, just that was something that I have noted lately.

    The Prewett Brothers (Fabian and Gideon) also. Everyone considers them legends even in death.

    Still can't get over the way Moody died. Had it been a duel with Voldemort it would've been better. But he died because of Mundungus -_-

    Are you only including pre Battle of Hogwarts Aurors, or do you count also post battle aurors?
    Because If you do, then were does Harry Potter fits in the list?

    I think Harry himself should have made the list. JK Rowling has said that Harry went on to become an Auror and eventually head up the entire Auror department. He defeated Voldemort in a head to head duel at the end of The Deathly Hallows which by itself speaks to his power and ability.

      I don't think it would take Harry a lot of time to catch up to Dawlish, no. With the real-life experience he has at the end of DH, I'd assume he's almost there already, and after years of studying and practicing as an Auror, he would almost certainly be better.

      Well if you're going to get technical like that then the #1 spot should clearly be held by Grindelwald as he was an auror at one point for a while and no one can argue that he would place within the top 5 most powerful wizards of all time, let alone aurors.

      Harry was a skilled duelist but he survived Voldemort due to sheer luck and plot armor most of the time. That one time it was Priori Incantatem. Then it was Dumbledore. Then it was the part of Voldemort's soul inside that took the killing curse instead of him allowing him to come back from "dead". Finally it was Voldemort's ego and misunderstanding of Wand's allegience that finished him off. And of all the horcruxes, Harry only destroyed one, having his friends and heck even Voldemort destroy horcruxes for him.

    Basically the aurors are like joining the special forces. Not just skills in combat but also got the smarts for it.

    I've always had an issue with Moody's capture by Barty Jr. I mean this was his house, which should've been like a fort or something. Before I read the books and with only the movies, I thought that Moody was captured with the help of Voldemort.

      That did seem like a plot hole when I first read it; how could one of the world's greatest Aurors be subdued by a spoiled brat with an attitude and a mediocre, cowardly wizard? Only answer I can think of is that he'd lost a few steps since retiring.
