    I am glad that you have been posting these excellent game tutorials. I am enjoying the very step by step layout of both this Rome game and the twilight imperium. Conquest empire game set 2 is my favorite of the sets. It is a very cool modification of struggle of empires. Maybe not the most historical but a super fun multiplayer experience. We really appreciate your hard work and fantastic presentation.

    Conquest of the Empire is an outstanding game. If you own the MB version, you should use the combat system of the Eagle Games edition, because the combat advantage system of the MB edition is totally unbalanced in favor of catapults. Even without the combat dice it is very simple to use with six-sided dice: infantry hits only on a 1 or 2, cavalry only on a 3, catapults only on a 4, galleys only on a 5 and a 6 is always a miss. Let inflation kick in only after each player had one more turn. And if you want to spice up your game, get some additional auxiliar infantry (AI) from Strelets: Auxiliar infantry costs 5 talents each and may be moved by a leader 1 province per turn. AI can be placed straight into every province you own, but it cannot attack (only defend) and have a stacking limit between 1 and 5, depending on the status of the province: max. 1 AI in a province worth 5 talents, max. 2 AI in a province worth 10 talents and max. 3 AI into your home province. You may add 1 AI for a city and 2 AI for a fortification. Thus the home province can be defended by up to 5 auxiliar infantry. It works great!

    Could you do a second video discussing how to play the 2005 version? There seems to be some pretty significant differences in how the 2 versions are played.

    I thought you can only do Pursuit with only Cavalry Units in your Legion?

  • @Nominrath

    1984 combat isn’t portrayed right... Combat advantage isn’t applied to each side. It’s first subtracted from each other with the side having the remainder gaining the advantage. For example, if the Attacker had one catapult equaling advantage +1 and the Defender had a catapult and a fortified city for a total advantage of +2, the Defender would have ‘Combat Advantage’ of +1 (2 - 1 = 1) and the Attacker would have nothing until the advantage numbers shifted. Also, combat continues until either A.) all the Defenders units are eliminated or B.) the Attacker chooses to retreat/call off the attack. Attacking isn’t dependent on the amount of units attacking, as long as there is one unit left (and the Attacker continues to press the attack), the attack continues.

      Thanks for point this out. I just tried playing the 1984 game with friends and using this harsh rules demo as a guide. The combat demo being wrong and us not understanding movement correctly really spoiled our games. I didn't own this game it was a friends so I wasn't able to preview the rules with a self play through.

    Been quite a while since I played this game. You cleared up the rules well on what you have covered. Seems you missed a lot of important things about the game here though. What about turn order and alliance bidding phase every season? Senate voting for powerful cards? the normal deck of cards? influence and influence markers? So many more essential rules to talk about in this game weren't covered.

      Thats because he was talking about the first game rules. there is a second version of the same game with rules in book 2. (2 rule books come with the game) look for conquest of the empire II rules of play.

    Getting ready to play for the first time. Something occurred to me. Why do cav cost more and do less overall dmg? Is it just because they are supposed to attack fleeing troops and can move 2? Just does not seem worth it to buy more expensive troops and then get less combat value out of them.

    • @gawelszczytkowski1991
      @gawelszczytkowski1991 3 года назад +1

      Still it is worth to have one in your army since the chance to "hit" the enemy should be higher - in case you are playing with the symbol-dice...

      I'm late, but yes, it's historically accurate that cavalry aren't as effective as infantry at this time. Cavalry were used to scout and run down retreating enemies. You aren't supposed to build a whole legion of them, their role is more supportive rather than combative. So like 3 cav tops in a full legion.

    I think the 2005 veraion only has 10 cavalry per color. Not 20. I counted all 6 of the armies cavalry units and counted 10 each. Not 20.

    The rulset of this game bothers me. It's hard to offset the stupidity of the combat advantage mechanic. Literally every game devolves into naval squadrons with 7 catapults per ship if people know how to play lol
    I've tried various kinds of house rules to limit the advantage but nothing feels right. Love the time period and concept but A&A is a better game and so is Shogun

    • @didelphidae5228
      @didelphidae5228 2 года назад +1

      The revised 2005 rules removes combat advantage. Catapults just reduce the effectiveness of fortified cities and can hit from the reserves instead.
