I want to mention something that doesn't have anything to do with the cars. You see, not only am I am major car guy, but I was a carpenter all my life as well. When that structure was built, the walls are laid out, and all the walls ran right through the building. One of the things done at the end, is taking a sawzall and cutting the "sills" out. That room you keep going in and out of, still has the 2x4 board on the floor and is a trip-all when going in and out. Drives me crazy seeing that on the floor. If you get a minute, take a sawzall and cut down against the sides and remover it B-4 someone falls. Thanks Chad, and good job on these projects!!!
Back in the late 50's there were no affordable 4 speed transmissions or even adapter plates for transmission swaps. If the average highschool kid had a column shift and wanted it changed to a cool floor shift he would usually have home made "double" shift rods that were both bolted on the center hump . You would shift the left one into low. Then when it was time you would shift it back into neutral - quickl;y grab the other shifter, take it out of neutral and shift into second then third. Some guys were very quick with that and could speed shift really well.
Of course a "budget build" is the real world most hot rodders live in. As one who remembers the 60s, what was so great was that you could buy a 55 Chevy, say, for a few hundred bucks ! I got a 65 Corvette roadster 396 for $2200, a friend got a 67 427 Corvette 3-2s for $3K.... That was the good old days. That is part of what the ''old timers' miss so much. Now, they want so much for 50/60 cars, you might as well buy a used "new" car, which finally, now, performes better anyway. But the simplicity of those old cars is unbeatable. I wont talk about the move to eliminate gasoline.... (or what the world is coming to). Cars cam be a be an escape too. Part of the appeal of Bad Chad is he works on a more normal budget, and finds economical solutions.
I love that you're able to switch back and forth between cars and still show a quality show. Building I'm glad everything was settled with you and Doug.
Well Chad you would be proud of me. My son and I are fixing up a 81 ford pickup for him and we were working on the radiator support tonight and it had some rust holes in it so I cut the rust out and made some patch pieces, one of the pieces was a little too small and my son asked “how are you going to fill that gap” and I said “Bad Chad style go get me a coat hanger” it worked awesome!
Glad to have found your shifter/console build here…. It’s April ‘24 and I’m just now doing my used “B&M Ratchet shifter…. it’s taken 25 years of continuous work to this point… I appreciate your skills cutting thru the all your thinking processes…yup look at it three ways, get three answers then build it how it works best. Cool
loving every minute, great tip for ya even no you no what's going on, but just try, one day using ur new cordless drill for when u need to drill a hole,it will be 10 times easier with the cordless as youll have a heap more control and way easier, all round the battery's will last ages aswell, have 2 battery ready to go will last you the week easy ,these new cordless drills are somthing else these days, obviously if you had a job where you had to do 100 holes maybe the elecric is the way to go but them cordless are machines these days give it a goal youll love it cheers
that shifter is designed to mount directly to the top of the transmission/tunnel and run with a boot screwed to the tunnel over/under rings.. it's not a console shifter, you have to consider the throw, how far does the transmission shift link lever have to move to hit the various positions, VS how far the shift lever linkage actuates to hit said positions, from your forward lock position being park, all the way back to its lock position which is usually "low" you can lock in low, push down then manual walk through second third, or that rear position may be reverse? I guess thats what the holes are for in the vertical link? that shift lever moves lock to lock to move the transmission shift linkage through all positions, P R 3 2 Lo? usually 5 maybe 6 with an OD? or however its arranged? console shift linkage set ups account for this "throw" and transfer it to the vertical throw link to click through each position precisely, how will this work as a console shifter? look at your olds console to see what I am referring to far as the throw ratio?
Chad is possibly the Bob Ross of his own art. He seems to love keeping it easy and to have it make perfect sense from every angle. Certanly, he has a God-gifted and well calibrated eye as well.
This is going to be cool . Waiting to see what you use for shifter and linkage . Fabrication just never stops ! Love the mods Chad ! Thumbs-up Chad and Jolene 👍
Every day I watch you guys, I am inspired to work on my own projects and just build items when I can instead just buying parts. "Built, not bought"!! Thanks Chad and Jolene!! LOVE THE NEW SHIRT!!!!
I never read the constructions that come with parts until later when I realize I put everything in backwards. Thank you Chad and Jolene!!!! Keep kicking ass
In the slot for the shift lever (in the console), you could put a couple of brushes. Like the ones that are placed under the doors of the house, which are bought in DIY stores. Great job guys. 😎👍 Greetings from Switzerland
I love the work you are doing on the cars . When you found out you were screwed on the motor for Jolene's car I myself wanted go up there from Texas and kick some butt.Even I know you don't cut a bolt head in half to make something fit. I helpedy grandfather fix cars and I knew even at a young age that you don't do it.
Put some window wiskers in the slot where the shifters comes up through the consol . No need to scratch up the chrome right . Thumbs-up Jolene 👍 and 👍 Chad

I know it's been hard the last few days but you both can hold your heads up high, don't let the buggers grind you down guys.
Perfect. Don't let those flapper wheels touch your chrome.
Love watching and learning. Thanks for the hard work you two
