  • What do you do when your area doesn't have a DMR repeater. Well, you make plans to build your own.
In this video, I show a stepping stone on the path to a full DMR repeater. This is a DMR high-powered
hotspot using the STM32 MMDVM board from repeater builder.

A good source of information for building a MMDVM repeater is this blog post by N5AMD.

As always, Thanks Bob. I've only started the DMR journey a week or so ago and I can see a need for a High Power Hotspot over here in DeFuniak Springs. Currently running a home built hotspot. A little MMDVM on a R-Pi W. 73, John W4CJB

Those MMDVM boards are fun. Two tips for those reading this...first, Amazon sells DB9 serial cables very cheap--get one and cut an end off and you'll have all nine wires and they're stranded. Second, raise that mobile off the hot power supply and add two muffin fans (4" will work) side by side blowing from the back towards the front...you mentioned heat--whenever your handheld is receiving, your mobile is transmitted and it'll easily go over the duty cycle and overheat the mobile. Get it cooled and you can do high power...although antenna altitude would help more (and quality feedline). Love the options...DMR, D-Star, YSF, & P25. You can even add an OLED screen or Nextion screen to "see" what's going on. The only difference between this and a repeater is you may not always here someone that's local transmitting into your MMDVM because it's not being amplified and re-transmitted. Remember the most important rule of linked radios--NEVER tailgate...always leave space between parts of QSOs so others can unlink their radios (you can't unlink when it's transmitting, you have to wait for the rude operators to shut up so you can send an unlink command).

I put together one of those. I bought a board at a Ham Convention and connected it to my Rasperry Pi and a Yaesu 2/440 rig. In fact the radio was a 8900. It did work but
al little tricky getting the tiny trimmer pots set right. It's been several years since I used it. It's the same company you got yours from.

You’ll be putting the $$ very affordable 🤨 Motorola Super Max Capacity IP Linked repeater systems…
OUT OF BUSINESS soon enough. LOL
Seriously, that’d be a neat concept for linking up local scouting groups located in areas w/limits power and connectivity l
    Thanks

Just curious but what is the little thing in the usb port of your board? Looks like a wireless mouse plug but was just wondering. KK4LBX

Good job. Any special adjustments to the radio?

No adjustments. The only adjustments I needed were some minor tweaking on the DVM board itself . There are adjustment pots for RX/TX levels.

At that power and coverage, this would need frequency coordination from FASMA. This is not a hotspot and would be legally a DMR repeater. Hotspots are short ranged, less than 1 watt devices.

What is your living environment, trying to setup a repeater in a mostly urban area just curious if it will work well

I live in a suburban area. If you are in an urban environment with high buildings, you may have problems unless you can get your repeater antenna on top of a building.

You literally show nothing about how this works. Fourteen minutes of looking at your hands.
