      while maracas do are used on some older pieces, i believe the sound is being made by the cajon peruano, which produces both drum and that ''maraca'' sound

      Out of context? on the contrary, since this piece was collected by Martinez Champanhon in La Libertad, as were played in the churches of the time, so it is not far fetched that the natives used those instruments. other pieces collected by him have a strong African and Indigenous influences.
