Solyanka is a pre-soviet type of soup. Features pickled and brine-fermented vegetables, often using up last year's winter preserves. Every household has it's own version. Kvas is a home-made "small beer" made from bread or occasionally flour. Alcohol content is usually 1% or less. Often served to children in place of lemonade, or used in soups. It tastes slightly of bread, fruit, and ranges from sweet to refreshingly tart, depending on the tastes of the brewer.

    1. The things we (in the US) were taught in school about the USSR were heavily propagandized and grossly inaccurate.
    2. The Russian people are far more warm and charming than I was ever aware of, and that goes back to the first point.
One of the greatest harms caused by the Cold War was all of the lies and propaganda on both sides. I hope the Rus-Ukr war ends soon and all of the sanctions and other nonsense are lifted. There's a Russian village hid way up in the mountains near here where every family has been traumatized by the loss of numerous family members to the torture, mass murder, gulags, etc of the Soviet times. The elders are survivors who managed to escape to here. Seriously damaged, but wonderful people. Needless to say, they don't reminisce fondly about those days.
