Okay, just want to update and tell everyone in this comment or to future readers of this comment, you just have to literally follow what he did on the video and let all photos from your iphone storage sync on its own COMPLETELY. And when it has completed, the data from your iphone storage will automatically lessen on its own you just have to wait or in my case, i restarted my phone and viola! All my photos are now stored in the icloud and my data from 64gb it is now only taking up 2gb after syncing it to my icloud. Thank you so much for this video and for your response! You just gained a subscriber 😊
You have solved a question I’ve been looking for and couldn’t find in an hour of videos. I was paying for the 2TB because I love going to concerts but I still had my photos taking up my phone storage but now it they only take up 4.63gb. thank you sir !
Everyone says the same. I’ve done it. Watched so many videos. *Yes it says sync, I’ve optimized *yes it shows that I now have 2 T in iCloud storage., *yes it shows that all photos/videos is “synced” in iCloud but when I go to iPhone storage it is still full. 252gb out of 260 gb. I cannot record. I feel so helpless. Someone please help and redirect me to a video for my issue.
Hi Stefan, thank you for your video, it is great. I've followed what you shared in the video and did that for my 256GB iPhone XS. I'm downsizing to a iPhone 13 128GB. When I setup my new phone via iCloud backup, will those images get downloaded to the local device storage? Or will they just be on the iCloud and won't take up my 128GB?
Everything works automatically as I explain in the video. So it will still download some and the rest be just thumbnails pointing to them on iCloud. So as long as you have storage left on the phone it will download some and when it starts to get full it will be replaced by a small thumbnail.
You have probably filled your phone too much to have this feature working properly. And 50GB iCloud is not enough for all your photos on your phone. Obviously
Hi, Sir! I’m considering purchasing the 200GB iCloud storage plan. If I decide to cancel my subscription after a month, will my photos and videos be deleted? Thanks for your help!
if you have more stored than you pay for, it will be deleted. so as an example, if you have 200gb and then cancel and it can not fit your phone storage then it will be deleted.
iCloud has nothing to do with iCloud Photo Library. This is only for the photos you see in the photos app. If you store photos in iCloud separately they are only stored there. If you shoot in raw and have them in the photos app and has activated iCloud Photo Library they are uploaded to iCloud too and replaced with a smaller thumbnail if the os needs more storage. And when you click on the small thumbnail it will be downloaded in full resolution as I explain in the video.
I have 13.2GB out of 50GB in Icloud storage and my photos are taking up 12.27 GB. I have around 300 photos & 34 videos and it says 15 items are syncing. But Im confused on how I still have so much space being taken up by photos.
Does it work with what’s app and other apps I’ve got a problem with the data coming from what’s app and some other apps and sometimes what’s app locks me out
Hi! I have a 13pro 128gb and in my iphone storage it says that I have used 46gb in my photos. I bought icloud 200gb and I transferred my photos to icloud, what concerns me is the photos from my iphone storage has remained 46gb even after transferring everything to icloud storage. I thought that the logic is when you transfer photos from iphone storage to icloud, it will erase the data that is being stored in the iphone storage. or if not totally erase, data should be lesser than 46gb at least. can someone answer me this? i'm really annoyed and i've gone thru every channel and websites that could help me resolve this but to no avail :( thank you in advance!
It sounds like you have transferred your photos manually somehow. You shouldn’t do that. Check out my video. Just enable iCloud Photo Library and have your photos in the photos app and just wait a couple of days. Then it will transfer the photos to iCloud and replace them with a thumbnail on your phone automatically when needed. If it doesn’t then your phone doesn’t need more storage at the moment.
@@svartling oh no, i did not transferred it manually, I followed everything in the video. I just turned on the icloud and let it sync on its own. Though it is still progressing as of the moment and it's still on 63% in the icloud. Should I just wait until it has synced completely?
Yes just wait. Everything is automatically handled. So no worries. It will do everything for you when needed. But it won’t clear your storage before your storage starts to be full. No worries just shoot your photos and be happy.
@@svartling thank you so much for responding. I will definitely give an update when its done syncing on my icloud completely and will leave a review here if it works. 😊
Hello Stefan - Thank you for your video. It has given me hope. However, I have a bit of a problem. I have a 256GB Iphone 8 with 140GB used (w/ 80 GB of photos). When I optimize this phone, it does not think I need more space and therefore has not reduced the size of the photos (i.e it is still 80GB). I just purchased a 2TB Family plan Icloud subscription. I have run a full back-up of this Iphone 8. I just bought a new iphone 11 with 128 GB of storage. When I use the backup to transfer the data (Photos etc) from the old phone to the new phone, will the optimizer engage and will I be able to load the data on my new smaller phone?
If you turn on iCloud photos on all your apple devices it doesn’t matter how much storage, it will take care of it for you automatically. So yes. It optimizes it on the devices it needs to do that on. Just turn on iCloud photos.
Hi bro thx for this video really useful, I have 4 questions: -If I have an iPhone with a small storage and enables optimize storage for iCloud photos, and I have another iPhone with a big storage and I want to enable downloads and keep originals is there any issue or does the option need to be the same on both iPhones? -We will say I have an iPhone with a big storage and I’m enabling optimize storage option, so after some days I change the option to download and keep originals, is there any issue with that? -When I backup my iPhone via finder on Mac is the photos will be including with the backup? And if its it will be as a full resolution or just a thumbnail? -While my iPhone backup to iCloud and the internet disconnect, and then back after a time, is there will be any issue with the process? I apologize for this questions, more respect for you.
Different storage doesn't matter. Everything syncs. And no issue if one device downloads all keep originals. And no issues with backup via Finder because every time you download, view or share a photo they get downloaded in full resolution
@Stefan Svartling thx for reply me really appreciate it, but for last question is there any problem when syncing if I lost the internet or the internet has a problem and be slow for a time?
Hi Stefan! I have an 128GB iPhone and with the optimized photos enabled, my photos take up 90GB of my iPhone storage and 490GB on my iCloud (of 2TB space). Unfortunately with the apps and other stuff I don’t have space in my iPhone anymore. You know what can I do? I don’t want to delete my photos😢
That is incredibly many photos! Sadly I can just say that then the small thumbnails takes up 90gb of your space and can’t be smaller. So the only thing you can do is buying a phone with more space. I did that.
Hey I uploaded all my photos to iCloud but my photos take the same amount of storage on my phone and iCloud it’s 33.5gb in both the places can you help me figure out how to get my internal storage reduced?
First of, you should not upload photos to iCloud. You should just do what I show in the video. Activate iCloud Photo Library. Nothing else. Then it t does everything automatically.
@@svartling I saw your video now after getting all my pics uploaded to iCloud I bought iCloud only because my phone storage was getting full but it just reduced 3-4 gb that’s it
If you done as I said in the video then you don’t need to worry. As I said in the video it deletes your photos automatically and replaces them with a small thumbnail when needed. If the phone doesn’t need more storage at the moment then it doesn’t delete. So when you keep using it and the phone feels that your storage gets too little then it deletes more.
One question by using optimise storage since lower res photos are replaced on the iphone, when I tap and open a photo or video can I view the full resolution on the fly or it will still show in lower rez. Kind of like how google photos shows up in 4k on the fly.
Yes when open or share a photo it will always be the full resolution. It downloads the full resolution from iCloud. But remember, it’s only the really old photos that you haven’t touched for a long time that get optimized. All new will always be full resolution on phone.
Oh my gosh thank you so much for this explanation. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support yesterday, and they suggested I turn iCloud syncing OFF to resolve this issue. Also to everyone out there who is not tech savvy like me - I recommend having more than one place for backing up your photos. I have been using google photos as my back up and didn’t understand that deleting photos on my phone would also delete them on iCloud. Thank goodness I have been using google photos as backup since I permanently deleted a LOT of photos on my iCloud 😰 Thanks again for this video! So helpful
Hello! Does the quality look good on your phone when you see it on your phone when you optimise photos? If I’m not using data and I want to view a photo I have taken a long time ago, will the quality be the best or will it use less megapixels?
No of course not. I said that in the video. If you delete a photo it gets deleted on all your devices and in iCloud. As I also said, you don’t have to delete anything. It is completely automated. When your phone needs more space the oldest photos will be replaced by a small thumbnail by iCloud.
If you mean iMessage so no. iMessage you can set how long they should be accessible before deletion. I’d set to always they will always be there and take up space. It has nothing to do with iCloud Photo Library. But messages only takes up iCloud storage and no phone storage
Excellent tutorial, thank you. One question - is there a way to make certain photos only available on your phone and not on iCloud? Can you set up certain pictures to not sync to iCloud?
One more question - If you delete a photo on the iPhone, will that photo also be deleted in the iCloud? Or will iCloud persist and put back that deleted photo on your phone the next time it syncs with iCloud Photos?
I watched and followed your very clear tutorial step by step. I subscribed to the 200 GB plan from Apple, then turned on iCloud Photos on my iPhone. I have 80 GB worth of photos. It's been 2 hours and iCloud Photos is still showing 1%. How long does syncing take?
I said that in the video and have answered that in the comments on the video many times. It only syncs them when needed. It only do that when you don’t have storage left on the phone. And it only does that when charging and connected to WiFi.
hello, i want to ask some questions, i hope you can answer, as you said that the local photo library is just gonna show the low res photos or videos, 1. let's say if i want to upload something in instagram, it means i need to click the photos/videos in the photo library first so that i can get the full res in instagram? 2. how long is the full res gonna remain in our local photo library? 3. what about the photos that we just taken like a minute ago or today? is it directly downsized also?
Hi. No photos you share will be downloaded from iCloud in full resolution when sharing. No need to click it before that. And all recent and most used photos will stay on your phone. Only those you don’t watch at so often will be optimized
@@svartling oh great! i thought that every photos/videos including the new ones are gonna be immediately optimized because i'm currently using the "Download and Keep Originals" setting, and kinda want to change it to Optimize Storage. It won't take much time since the files are already on the icloud, right?
@@svartling I just Googled it and it suggests you can undo it. You uncheck the optimise box then select download originals. I just want to know I can reverse it if I choose to. One less regret in life 😂
No as I explain in the video. If you delete a photo it gets deleted from icloud too. But if you do as I said in the video it’s totally automated and you don’t have to worry. Older photos gets replaced with small thumbnails that doesn’t take up so much space. Watch the video.
It will be deleted everywhere. So also in iCloud. If you only want to store photos on iCloud without all the benefits of iCloud Photo Library, then it’s better to copy them manually to a folder you create on iCloud Drive.
Thanks nice video. So I have 32gb and I bought storage 200gb. If I click optimize storage and take 1080p 60fps video will it save that resolution on iPhone? Because I would want to upload that resolution not a lower resolution. Thanks!
You always have the full resolution in iCloud. And when you don’t have storage left on your iPhone it will only have a thumbnail on your iPhone, and when you click on it it downloads the full resolution from iCloud. Exactly what I say in the this video.
Hey, is it possible you use the photos app smoothly, even if there are thousands of photos in the cloud? Or does it start to lag after a specific amount of photos?
Yes it’s possible. It doesn’t lag at all. Apple has done so it loads in the thumbnails that are visible when you scroll. You don’t notice any difference at all. Totally smooth scrolling.
Hi! Thanks for the video! can i make 2 questions? I have a 16gb iphone (iphone 6s) so I have a small iphone storage so all photos are in a bad quality (cause icloud needs to optimize iphone storage)... my iphone download the photos only if a open them so my question is: - if I make an itunes backup, i have to download the photos from iclous before i make the backup? if they are in a low quality, itunes backup them in that low quality? - icloud needs internet for undownload and download photos everytime? cause lately my 4g is pretty slow Thank you very much and sorry for my awful english
@@svartling thank you very much! i have an other question lol i have a mac but I don't use icloud for the computer photos... what happens if i activate icloud on my mac? i don't have the same pictures on mac and on my iphone.... on mac i have more photos because i usually import all photos from iphone to computer and then i delete double photos or ugly photos in my iphone. I hope you can understand what i mean :/
Then it will work the same as on iPhone. And it will sync all the Mac photos to iCloud and your iPhone will get them too. And the Mac will get the photos on your iPhone and in iCloud.
I just upgraded my icloud from 5 to 50 gb for my photos, but still it's still at 5 gb- my photos had not transferred to icloud yet. How long should I wait?
Problem is when I delete my photos in my phone and it will be deleted in my iCloud as well, how I can delete the photos and still remain it on my iCloud?
@@svartling so, I’m trying to find out. How to delete photos/vids from phone but not iCloud. Do I just sign out of iCloud (in the phone settings), delete everything on phone, and then click the iCloud back on.. now with much more room on my phone??
As soon as you use iCloud Photo Library it automatically replaces photos with small thumbnails on your iPhone. It will only keep the latest and the ones you open. So you don’t need to delete anything.
Yes to download them in full resolution by opening them you need internet connection. But just scrolling through the thumbnails you don’t. But most photos aren’t in iCloud, they’re on your device. Only those you haven’t watched out shared for a while are in iCloud only
Thank you for this video. I have one remaining question though. With iCloud storage enabled as you suggested, how would iPhone treat NEWLY taken pictures. Would these picture try to sync immediately, even on cellular mode OR would the iPhone intelligently try to wait a bit until I am home and try to upload them while on the home WiFi network. So my question is, is there any intelligent logic within this system that manages the upload of these pictures? Like for example IF there is plenty of storage left in the phone and consequently there is no need to rush syncing, then would the phone WAIT with syncing until on WiFi OR would it prioritize immediate sync to iCloud?
Yes it intelligently waits until you are charging it or are connected to WiFi. Unless you not forcing it to sync. At the bottom in the photos app you see the status of the sync.
@@svartling This is fantastic news. I was worried about enabling it and finding out that it would try to prioritize instant syncing at all costs. Many thanks again for getting back to me with this good news. This has helped a lot in my decision to starting to use iCloud from now on.
There is also a setting in settings/photos/cellular data where you can decide if you want to use cellular data for syncing or wait for WiFi. I have unlimited cellular data so I have this on but you can decide how you want it
@@svartling Thank you. Yes, that option I saw and understand. But my concern was that with setting WiFi only sync, would then in turn limit me of looking at my pictures when away from home WiFi. E.g. I want to show a picture to a friend away from home and then I would have to turn on the cel for iCloud. I understand this is the only way to look at pictures while away from home WiFi and I assume the corresponding date. My concern was only the aforementioned taking pictures and automated upload iCloud management thereof. This is even more important wen taking video or when on vacation and roaming. I trust the last thing anyone would want is iCloud trying to prioritize sync after a newly taken video while roaming. 😀
When I turn on my iCloud it downloads the old photos from my old phone on my new one which I do not want I want to keep the photos separated like the old photos stay on the old phone and the new pictures stay on the new phone without having the two mic but using the same ICloud am I using it wrong and is there a way to stop this?
Then turn off iCloud photos on your old one and delete them from iCloud. Then turn on iCloud photos on your new one. But be sure that you have app your photos stored on your old before deleting them from iCloud.
Thank you for the video! My settings are set exactly like yours but my photos still take up to 200 GB from my iPhone storage🤯 Any idea of how to get it fixed?
Have you waited up to three days? How many photos in total do you have? Maybe the thumbnails themself takes up 200GB? They can't be smaller than thumbnails size. If so you simply need to buy a new phone with more storage or delete photos. There is no other way.
Hey, i have a question, my i have 200gb icloud storage (50gb used) and my photos are still taking up 60gb on my 128gb phone, its not optimized, any help?
If you do what I show in the video then you don’t have to do anything more. It will automatically optimize when needed. It’s not until you don’t have so much storage left it gets optimized. So the more you use your phone the more it will optimize for you.
Do you know what to do if my photos are not downloading to iCloud and are just staying on the device? My device is full (63.5GB out of 64) and my phone is still showing there are 26GB in photos. I purchased more iCloud space today and it looks like they are not transferring over. On the iPhone Storage page iCloud Photos is listed at 1%, meaning that none have shifted over. I have all the correct settings checked to enable photos to go to iCloud. Do you know how to fix this?
@@svartling I appreciate your reply. Currently, photos take up 4.1GB in my iCloud storage. My iCloud is showing 4.8/50GB are currently used up. Apple gives you 5GB for free but I purchased the 50GB plan a few hours ago and came back to see that none of the photos have transferred over.
Then you just have to wait. Leave the phone on a charger over night and connected to Wi-Fi. It can even take a few days before it starts to upload. Also do a soft reset to restart your phone once before that.
@@svartling Ah, you were right! After updating to IOS 15.4, they now have a note on the storage page that lets you know photos are syncing to iCloud and that it could take days for them to finish. Thank you for your response !!
You can store anything you want on iCloud. But this video is about iCloud photos. If you use a Mac you can store everything on the desktop or in the documents folder and it works the same as iCloud photos works. Otherwise the app that you use need to support iCloud storage.
Hey, great tutorial u hv got there, thanks a lot. Just wondering if u are to send the videos/photos to ur colleagues/friends via whatsapp/drive/telegram/fb etc, will it be sending the downsized version instead of the full qualities in iCloud ?
I love your channel, I have a quick question, my iCloud and phone is already set up exactly like this video you made . However it’s still saying it’s full I have a 64 gun iPhone with 200 Tb of iCloud starage , optimize storage is already on as well . Do you have any more suggestions, I keep buying new phones Every time it does this I’m on my 4th iPhone 🤦♀️ and can’t get a new phone , please help ❤, thank youu
hello Stefan thank you for the great content. ''Full resolution version can be downloaded from iCloud anytime'' what exactly does that mean. is it referring that I will need to sign in to iCloud and download it manually to have access to them?
It only gets replaced if the operating system needs more storage. So sometimes never, it depends on your storage. Don’t worry about it, it’s totally automated so you don’t have to worry. You just need to have enough of iCloud storage.
Hai. Thank you for this video. Answered lot of my questions about optimizing iphone storage with icloud (especially photos). However i still have 1 question. Let say I have 128 gb iphone. And i already use icloud photos. Then my photos on icloud already above 128gb. What if I want to uncheck the “optimize storage” or I want to download the full resolution from all my photos, what would happen? Is the iphone will deny it?
If you have more photos than can fit your storage you obviously can’t download them to that device. You still would be able to turn it off but the only way you can get them is from another apple device or from the web
Hi i have 35GB of photos in iphone storage and i’ve uploaded all to icloud photos and says it takes up 35GB in icloud photos but photos still takes up 30+ GB on my iphone storage. Help me please, i’ve turned on optimized iphone storage aswell
Is it supposed to automatically downgrade the photos on photos app after you’ve uploaded it all to icloud or will it take something else for it to downgrade quality
It automatically optimizes storage when needed. So I if the phone still has enough storage then nothing happens until it thinks you need more space. So you don’t have to do anything, it does it for you.
Could you please tell me that I had the same like as you mentioned in Icloud, I had 50GB of icloud and only used 345 MB, but my iphones it says i had 32GB and i used up 31 GB...the fact is i deleted most of my pictures and videos ..but i still see my iphone is full ...yet my icloud still got plenty of storage, how can i reduce the iphone storage and move to icloud...Please help! I did pay icloud everymonth for $1...
Have you watched my video at all? iCloud photos does everything automatically. It removes photos and replaces them with thumbnails when needed. You don’t see them as removed. SO do as I show in the video and then when you are connected to Wi-Fi the phone does everything automatically.
@@svartling of course i watched many times and keep repeating...i watch many of others videos as well but i watch yours is the most clear explanation therefore i ask you, cause i feel so frustrated and it seems something wrong in my phone or I just don't know enough...i have been doing this back and forth for the past one week and feeling frustrated...what did i miss out? i knew every single steps you mentioned it in there...but somehow i just still seeing that iphone full...what do i had in iphone exactly to take out the 31 GB ? That is bothering me cause i only left few MB of pictures and 1 short video...and the rest are nothing...so i just curious why it is full...and unable to reduce that iphone space...
Because iCloud has learned that you don’t need so much storage on your iphone so it fills up your iPhone storage first, and when you need more storage on your phone, then it will remove it from your phone and only have it in iCloud. Totally automatically. So for example: If you only have 15GB left on the iphone and starts record a 4K video, then after some minutes of recording that video, the phone will feel that you need more storage and removes the images and videos you haven’t open in a while and makes room for the video you recording.
Hello, thank you for this video. I just have a question, I bought the 50gb icloud storage and i want to sync all my photos into icloud so it doesn’t take up my ipad storage but in photos it says that I don’t have enough space to put my photos in icloud. I check my icloud and it was 5/50 and my photos storage was 33 gb. I’m not sure what to do now. Thank you.
The reason is probably because you also backup your whole phone and other devices to iCloud. All devices on the same account uses the same iCloud. And backups can take a lot of space. 50GB is not so much anymore. My suggestion is to buy the 200GB version and also turn off photos from the iCloud backup. Because you don’t need to backup your photos if you use what I show in the video. iCloud Photo Library.
If I optimize my photos will both my photos a videos be the same quality when I view them in the camera role app????? Does ICloud also save the edits that I made to the pictures in the app after taking them. I am asking because when I view iCloud on safari or online on my PC my videos are blurry and lower quality. Please help if you can???????
Yes they will have the original quality when opened or shared. So after clicking on them they get downloaded to the original quality. That’s the whole point.
Yes of course. If the phone has decided that it’s old or you haven’t watched it for a while and replaced it with a thumbnail on your phone. Then it downloads it in full to your phone again when you choose or click on it.
I did the same as in the video (in fact, it was already activated) but the amount of storage on my phone for photos has not changed. It remains the same unless I delete the images and videos. So even if I have enough space in my iCloud 2tb, I do not have it in my iPhone and it continues to say that it's full.
Of course you don’t get two gigabyte on your phone. How much takes the photos up on iCloud? Have you checked? How much do the photos take up on your phone? I have about 300000 photos and the thumbnails takes up 34 GB
@@svartling Yes! Finally, it worked!! after buying more storage space, I log out iCloud from my phone and log in again, and it did work. Thank you so much :)
Hi, thanks for video. I’ve been struggling with storage & photo issues for months now & you explained better than Apple did! I’m still having issues though & wondered if you could help please? I currently have only 16G phone. Will upgrade shortly but want to sort my current phone & my understanding first. My phone is full! 15.8GB used. 2.51GB if photos. System 6.31GB & 3.89GB of other. Nearly all my apps are offloaded. I have 50GB iCloud with 23GB used with photos using 22.4GB. Some photos in low res on phone won’t load as high res as says no space! Apart from getting new phone with higher storage is there a solution at all? Many thanks
You simple has too little storage left. You can't even view the photos from iCloud in full resolution anymore. So the only solution is to buy a new iPhone with more storage or delete a lot of photos that you don't need. So my suggestion is to buy a new phone. That will solve this for you.
@@svartling Thank you for your reply & I'm sorry for my delay replying, I blame technology issues! I'm about to buy new iPhone SE & hope that solves the issue. Deleting photos doesn't seem to work & Apple confused me as usual! saying something like it wouldn't make any difference because it would automatically keep syncing from iCloud & filling up the space again 😕🤷♀️
hi thanks for the video. but my photos not in icloud even i already bought storage 200gb. and my phone storage already fulled . but the photos still there in phone and not in the icloud. so what i have to do?
Hello there Stephan, My phone has 64 GB storage. Photos mostly taking up all space. I had bought a 50 GB iCloud storage, it has 49,9 GB left. I mean what do you recommend in terms of having more storage on my iPhone? Also if I am taking many videos to post on RUclips, is it fine you fine/ or a good idea to record from my iPhone? I don’t need to buy a a camera specifically to record photos and video!? Ok, and lastly, where and how do I store my photos outside iCloud!? I would really appreciate your help! Thanks so much, LA
If you follow this video and activate iCloud Photo Library then your first problem is solved. And I record all my videos and photos with my iPhone. And storing photos outside iCloud, why? Maybe an SSD drive then?
Yes they still be on your phone. They will be on all your apple devices. If you delete a photo it gets deleted on all your devices and on iCloud. And yes you can share and do what you want with your photos
Thanks for the video! I got a iPad mini and was worried about the 64 gb storage, I turned on this feature and bam! The photos space was reduced from 42 to 4 gb!
hello stefan , i pay for the icloud plus and i have the 200gb storage and i literally only have 700 on my photos but the thing is when i go the Iphone storage it says photos takes up 26 gb, what should i do?
As I say in the video, you should not do anything. Just enable iCloud Photo Library and everything is fully automatic. If the OS needs more storage, it will simply fix that for you. As long as it don’t need more storage it will use more storage for your photos on the iPhone
💥💥 Thank you greatly for this video so clearly explaining how to set it up. Two questions please… 1- If I want to text someone the high res image how do I do that if the phone has a low res thumbnail.? 2- How do I save all of the high res images and videos to Photos on my Mac if they are only in the cloud.? 🤟🏼
Every time you click, share or watching a photo it automatically downloads the full resolution. You never need to download all of them manually. And they syncs automatically to the photos app on your Mac. Same thing there, all you click on or watch are downloaded automatically in full resolution.
Hi Stefan, how do I know the photo is just a thumbnail which is uploaded and optimized or still a original photo before I click to view it? Does they look different? And if I want to send some photos to my friend, for example , by email, I maybe will not click them to view, just selcet them through the photo album, so the iphone will also download them before I send them , or just sending the thumbnails? Thanks!
If all photos are saved in icloud then why on my phone all photos are still available and if those photos are just like thumbnails so if dont use internet then i cant open photos in my phone cos they get downloaded from icloud ?? So confusing lol
It’s not confusing at all. You need Internet to use iCloud photos. And they get replaced by small thumbnails that don’t take up so much storage space. That’s why it looks like all photos are still on your phone. So if you delete a photo it get deleted in both iCloud and your phone. If you want to look at a photo that is now just a thumbnail on your phone, then it downloads it from iCloud before opening.
@@svartling ok gotcha but when i use phone without internet, i have noticed i can still open all photos!! I mean those thumbnails, how is that possible??
You can’t with those that are just thumbnails. So you haven’t tried that. Only the oldest photos, photos that you have never opened are replaced with thumbnails. And to have them uploaded you have to be on WiFi and charge your phone. Usually over night.
Then you definitely are doing something wrong. They have excellent original quality. The photos is always stored in original quality in iCloud Photo Library. So try to find what you are doing wrong is my recommendation

Hi sir i just purchase my icloud storage but it stop syncing bcs phone storage is full but my icloud hasnt use up yet. May i know how to solve this?
Do what I show in this video. Wait 2-3 days for it to sync will charging. Be sure to have enough iCloud storage.
Everyone says the same. I’ve done it. Watched so many videos.
*Yes it says sync, I’ve optimized
*yes it shows that I now have 2 T in iCloud storage.,
*yes it shows that all photos/videos is “synced” in iCloud
but when I go to iPhone storage it is still full. 252gb out of 260 gb. I cannot record. I feel so helpless. Someone please help and redirect me to a video for my issue.
Restart your phone
@@ur2slob724 thank you for your reply. Will this delete everything? I have content I can’t delete that’s what is taking most of my memory
Why would a restart delete anything? Of course you can restart your phone.
Please help me I have 64Gb and it says I have you used 63.2Gb but I have 50Gb iCloud and only 5Gb has been used
You have probably filled your phone too much to have this feature working properly.
So what happens if I store photos on iCloud but need to access the full resolution image? I like to shoot iPhone photography in RAW.
iCloud has nothing to do with iCloud Photo Library.
Why doesn’t work on mine i have exactly the same settings
It does. Give it time. Connect to WiFi and charge your phone over night. Do the same a couple of nights.
I have 13.2GB out of 50GB in Icloud storage and my photos are taking up 12.27 GB. I have around 300 photos & 34 videos and it says 15 items are syncing. But Im confused on how I still have so much space being taken up by photos.
I have everything optimized as well
34 videos takes up a lot of space
@@svartling Oh snap thanks a lot, it went down to 6GB!
👍🏻
Does it work with what’s app and other apps I’ve got a problem with the data coming from what’s app and some other apps and sometimes what’s app locks me out
iCloud? What do you mean work with? iCloud Photo Library is for your photos on your apple device
No problem. I like to help.
Hi bro thx for this video really useful, I have 4 questions:
-If I have an iPhone with a small storage and enables optimize storage for iCloud photos, and I have another iPhone with a big storage and I want to enable downloads and keep originals is there any issue or does the option need to be the same on both iPhones?
This post is what I have been looking for for a long time. Thank you 🙏🏽
Great
Hi, is this can be running in macbook with MacOs High Sierra ?
If you have iCloud in that OS version so yes. But maybe not all features are supported in that old version
@@svartling thank you so much for your help.👍🏻
Hello Stefan I’ve a question so my photos take Upto 90GB of my storage so if I purchase 50GB iCloud is it ok?
No you need more than 90GB iCloud storage. Only your photos takes up 90GB so 50GB is not enough.
My status is set to "restore paused" i just purchased 200GB, i have all the setting you said, but my photos aren't going to icloud.
Click on restore paused then. Or put it ob charge over night when you are on wifi
@@svartling I left it to charge overnight and it appears to be syncing now. Thank you for responding. Subbed. 👍🏾
Thank goodness I have been using google photos as backup since I permanently deleted a LOT of photos on my iCloud 😰
Thanks again for this video! So helpful
I’m glad you liked it
Hello! Does the quality look good on your phone when you see it on your phone when you optimise photos? If I’m not using data and I want to view a photo I have taken a long time ago, will the quality be the best or will it use less megapixels?
Of course. Because you only see a thumbnail. When you click on it or share it, it gets downloaded in full resolution.
Hello. Once my photos are in the iCloud storage folder can I delete photos from the iPhone device to make more storage on my iPhone.?
No of course not. I said that in the video. If you delete a photo it gets deleted on all your devices and in iCloud. As I also said, you don’t have to delete anything. It is completely automated. When your phone needs more space the oldest photos will be replaced by a small thumbnail by iCloud.
@@svartling thank you for your information.
You’re welcome
Is it the same principle for messages?
If you mean iMessage so no. iMessage you can set how long they should be accessible before deletion. I’d set to always they will always be there and take up space. It has nothing to do with iCloud Photo Library. But messages only takes up iCloud storage and no phone storage
Can I delete photos from my phone and it’ll stay in iCloud’s
No.
Excellent tutorial, thank you. One question - is there a way to make certain photos only available on your phone and not on iCloud? Can you set up certain pictures to not sync to iCloud?
No you can’t. Icloud photos doesn’t work like that. The only way is to copy them to your own hard drive, usb drive or server.
One more question - If you delete a photo on the iPhone, will that photo also be deleted in the iCloud? Or will iCloud persist and put back that deleted photo on your phone the next time it syncs with iCloud Photos?
It will be deleted on all your devices and will be in the trash can in the photos app for 30 days and then be deleted for ever.
And it only does that when charging and connected to WiFi.
hello, i want to ask some questions, i hope you can answer, as you said that the local photo library is just gonna show the low res photos or videos,
1. let's say if i want to upload something in instagram, it means i need to click the photos/videos in the photo library first so that i can get the full res in instagram?
2. how long is the full res gonna remain in our local photo library?
3. what about the photos that we just taken like a minute ago or today? is it directly downsized also?
Hi. No photos you share will be downloaded from iCloud in full resolution when sharing. No need to click it before that. And all recent and most used photos will stay on your phone. Only those you don’t watch at so often will be optimized
@@svartling oh great! i thought that every photos/videos including the new ones are gonna be immediately optimized
because i'm currently using the "Download and Keep Originals" setting, and kinda want to change it to Optimize Storage. It won't take much time since the files are already on the icloud, right?
Definitely don't use Download and keep originals. Use optimise storage instead. No it doesn't take long.
Do you know how to reverse this and get them all loaded back onto the device in full resolution?
Actually no. But why do you want that?
@@svartling I just Googled it and it suggests you can undo it. You uncheck the optimise box then select download originals. I just want to know I can reverse it if I choose to. One less regret in life 😂
Ok :) I think there is only benefits so that is not something I will ever do.
@@svartling If your out without wifi and need to see some photos it will tbh…
Then it uses your mobile data. So no problem.
does this mean i can delete everything off my phone and delete from recently deleted and it will be on the cloud??
No as I explain in the video. If you delete a photo it gets deleted from icloud too. But if you do as I said in the video it’s totally automated and you don’t have to worry. Older photos gets replaced with small thumbnails that doesn’t take up so much space. Watch the video.
So what happens when you delete a photo on your iphone or ipad? Will it also delete on iCloud or will it stay on iCloud storage?
I have a 16gb iphone (iphone 6s) so I have a small iphone storage so all photos are in a bad quality (cause icloud needs to optimize iphone storage)... my iphone download the photos only if a open them so my question is:
- if I make an itunes backup, i have to download the photos from iclous before i make the backup? if they are in a low quality, itunes backup them in that low quality?
- icloud needs internet for undownload and download photos everytime? cause lately my 4g is pretty slow
Thank you very much and sorry for my awful english
iTunes backups uses the version that is on iCloud so that will be in full resolution. And yes iCloud Photo Library needs internet to work properly.
If it still is 5gb you haven’t upgraded.
Problem is when I delete my photos in my phone and it will be deleted in my iCloud as well, how I can delete the photos and still remain it on my iCloud?
Then you have to manually copy your photos to a folder you create in iCloud Drive. That is not what this video is about.
@@svartling alright thank you!
Thank you for the clear demonstration.
You’re welcome
So if you delete photos off your iPhone does it also delete off the iCloud?
Yes and it deletes from all your other apple devices too.
Do you need internet connection to view your iCloud photos?
Great 👍🏻
There is also a setting in settings/photos/cellular data where you can decide if you want to use cellular data for syncing or wait for WiFi.
Stefan , i have turned on optimise iphone storage but my iphone storage is still the same, didnt change at all
It doesn't change until needed. not until your storage is starting to get full. It's totally automatic.

Thank you! The exact information I was looking for! About phone storage after backing up photos to iCloud.
How many gigs of photos do you have in iCloud. You see that if you go into iCloud settings and manage storage. Not percent, how many GB?

What type of document that can be stored on icloud?
Did you can do that to the procreate files?
You can store anything you want on iCloud. But this video is about iCloud photos. If you use a Mac you can store everything on the desktop or in the documents folder and it works the same as iCloud photos works. Otherwise the app that you use need to support iCloud storage.
Hey, great tutorial u hv got there, thanks a lot. Just wondering if u are to send the videos/photos to ur colleagues/friends via whatsapp/drive/telegram/fb etc, will it be sending the downsized version instead of the full qualities in iCloud ?

No need to wait. Everything is automatic. It will not remove the full sized images until the phone needs more storage.
hello Stefan thank you for the great content. ''Full resolution version can be downloaded from iCloud anytime'' what exactly does that mean. is it referring that I will need to sign in to iCloud and download it manually to have access to them?
No it means that when you click on an image to view it or share it, it downloads the full image automatically
@@svartling How long is the high resolution version on the phone after it’s uploaded from the Cloud .??
It only gets replaced if the operating system needs more storage. So sometimes never, it depends on your storage. Don’t worry about it, it’s totally automated so you don’t have to worry. You just need to have enough of iCloud storage.

I had done the same but my iphone is still said full...do i need to just let iphone full by itself?
everytime i take picture it just go to iphone storage..how can i made it go to iclouds instead of iphone
Thanks man but why does my iPhone storage say I use 23 gb for photos when I have 50 gb of iCloud?
Because iCloud has learned that you don’t need so much storage on your iphone so it fills up your iPhone storage first, and when you need more storage on your phone, then it will remove it from your phone and only have it in iCloud. Totally automatically. So for example: If you only have 15GB left on the iphone and starts record a 4K video, then after some minutes of recording that video, the phone will feel that you need more storage and removes the images and videos you haven’t open in a while and makes room for the video you recording.
@@svartling thank you very much!

How to get the full resolution?
Click on the thumbnail to open the photo. It downloads the full resolution automatically.
Why is it that when I view iCloud on safari or online on my PC my videos are blurry and lower quality. Please help if you can???????
@user-pc6fq8si4v probably because it’s windows. They are not on my Mac.
Thanks so much for this video. So how about iCloud Drive ? Do I need to keep that on ? Thanks
Yes of course that should be on. A lot of apps uses iCloud Drive. And your iPhone backup too.
Hello let’s say I want to upload a tik tok video at full resolution as I filmed it on. Would that automatically post at the highest resolution
Great 👍🏻
For some reason everything is going the opposite way for me, can someone explain to me what did I do wrong?._.
Describe exactly what is going wrong by you.
Deleting photos doesn't seem to work & Apple confused me as usual! saying something like it wouldn't make any difference because it would automatically keep syncing from iCloud & filling up the space again 😕🤷♀️
if we click some pitcures and automatically download it. so, the pitcures might be download forever or soon undownload by itself?
They undownload automatically when your phone needs more storage.
hi thanks for the video. but my photos not in icloud even i already bought storage 200gb. and my phone storage already fulled . but the photos still there in phone and not in the icloud. so what i have to do?
You have to activate iCloud Photo Library exactly as I show in this video
@@svartling i also already activate it but still didnt happen anything.
Well then you have done something wrong. It is a feature that just works.
Hello there Stephan,
My phone has 64 GB storage.
Thanks so much,
LA
If you follow this video and activate iCloud Photo Library then your first problem is solved. And I record all my videos and photos with my iPhone. And storing photos outside iCloud, why? Maybe an SSD drive then?
will all my photos still be in my phone even after being downloaded into icloud. also can i send pictures or videos that are in icloud to my friends?
Yes they still be on your phone. They will be on all your apple devices. If you delete a photo it gets deleted on all your devices and on iCloud. And yes you can share and do what you want with your photos
when I want to look att a photo when having this setting on, will it be lower resolution?
No it then downloads the photo in full resolution in an instant
Thanks bro. What kind of iPad do you have?
The new iPad Air 4 (2020)
@@svartling that’s nice. I’m thinking of buying one because of the price at which it is offered
Yeah do so. It’s awesome. You can see all my videos about it on my channel
Thanks for the video! I got a iPad mini and was worried about the 64 gb storage, I turned on this feature and bam! The photos space was reduced from 42 to 4 gb!
Also, I didn’t know that it auto downloads a picture as soon as you open it, I thought I was looking at low resolution versions all the time
It’s a great feature. I’m glad you liked it
Hey, i have the settings same as you have shown ‘Optimize iPhone Storage’ and however I my phone storage is still full. I am a little confused 😅
Have you waited two three days? How many gb of photos do you have? Maybe the thumbnails take up all your storage because you have so many photos
hello stefan , i pay for the icloud plus and i have the 200gb storage and i literally only have 700 on my photos but the thing is when i go the Iphone storage it says photos takes up 26 gb, what should i do?
@@svartling Thank you 🌟
i put on icloud photos but i still have 9gb on my phone storage
Is all synced to iCloud yet? It usually takes a few days
@@svartling it says its all synced but nope
Then your phone doesn’t need more storage. It only optimize your storage when needed. You probably have a lot of free storage.
Thank you very much Stefan!
I’m glad I could help
Thank you so much for the useful info!!
You’re welcome
Hi Stefan, how do I know the photo is just a thumbnail which is uploaded and optimized or still a original photo before I click to view it? Does they look different? And if I want to send some photos to my friend, for example , by email, I maybe will not click them to view, just selcet them through the photo album, so the iphone will also download them before I send them , or just sending the thumbnails? Thanks!
It always downloads the photos before sharing them and sending them. So no worries. You never send the thumbnails.
@@svartling Thank you!
You’re welcome
Thank you for this video. You answered what I was looking for before converting to iCloud iPhoto. Many thanks!!!!!
I’m glad I could help
thanks a ton
You’re welcome
Awesome.....thanks!!
Great 👍🏻
If all photos are saved in icloud then why on my phone all photos are still available and if those photos are just like thumbnails so if dont use internet then i cant open photos in my phone cos they get downloaded from icloud ??
@@svartling thanks bro
You’re welcome
Best video 👍
I’m glad you liked it
I just wanna use my phone storage lol
Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 I have storage
Great
200 gigabytes? I wish! I’m not willing to pay money for storage so my piece of crap only has 32 gigs.
I have 2TB now :)
optimizing is a joke it ruins photo quality
That’s the whole point. And when you click on the thumbnail it downloads the full quality photo from iCloud. It’s a feature not a joke
@@svartling yet every time I attempt that it won't load. That qualifies as a joke for me
Then you definitely are doing something wrong. They have excellent original quality. The photos is always stored in original quality in iCloud Photo Library. So try to find what you are doing wrong is my recommendation
This video is exactly what i was looking for, thank you so much🤍🤍
You’re welcome
