We are researching hot-button topics and looking at space from a whole new perspective. Public broadcasting allows the public to use the equipment of Cosmic Obsession. Join in the discussion, listen to astronomy news, become involved in real scientific discoveries by simply staying tuned to Cosmic Obsession Observatory and the network of astronomers who support the Cosmic Obsession mission of public outreach.
www.itelescope.net is network of public access telescopes that amateur Francis Walsh uses to image hard-to-find NEO, comets, and asteroids. These are the tools that you can use to take part in science and discovery. Work with other amateur astronomers just like you by asking Francis a question. He's here to help if he can.
Finally, the opinions of amateur astronomers around the globe differ from one to another. The views of Francis Walsh do not always represent the views of Cosmic Obsession Observatory and those views that are his own are precisely that, his own and are not shared by the entire team of astronomers at Cosmic Obsession and those who bring you Cosmic Obsession.
Cosmic Obsession is the latest project, in a long line of successful projects, that Bob Fitzhenry has undertaken. The building, the equipment, and the original idea to build the observatory were his. As important as my role might have been, without the direction of Bob, the project would not have even been started.
I want to thank Bob and Debbie for giving me the opportunity to take this research to a whole new level and I look forward to looking up instead of back.

People seem to freak out about the fact that people spend 15k+ on a telescope, but then forget that a car enthusiast will buy an old timey sports car for way more. It's like any other hobby, if you have the means to buy it and thoroughly enjoy it, you should.
Yeah, the average used car costs more than $15k. New is $30k+.
Dentists will spend $15k on a carbon fiber bicycle. People just jealous that others have hobbies other than sitting around staring at a phone all day.
The dude in the video already has an expensive ass car lmao
I agree, I have about $5000 worth of telescopes.
But I sold some and may buy more. 🙂
His grab and go scope. ;)
Oldmanfunky yeah, and it takes 26 minutes to grab it :D
Very Nice Telescope. Many years ago I bought a 17.5 inch mirror from Coulter and bought a kit somewhere and built a 17.5 dob.
I rolled it out of a storage building. Later traded it for a new Nexstar 8 in 2000 when they first came out with them. I got one of
the first ones. Thanks for the video. Super nice telescope.
@@davidaaaa4611 Nice. Our observatory now in Kerrville Texas is a technological wonder. I’ll be bringing new images of the incoming comet soon! Thanks for commenting!

Nice! I used to have a 12 Inch Collapsible Dobsonian that I thought was humongous and took time to set up. Nothing compared to this. The views through this must be incredible!
Would be very interesting to see what kind of image you could see through this.
On Facebook there are: pages/Cosmic-Obsession/142110345813416 and the address cosmicobsession .
Well might as well bust out the ham radio too while you at it.
I see that you have true north marked on the driveway just good!
You should have brought the equipment out before you started filming.
Yes. At the time I recorded everything and edited nothing. SORRY!
For people that do nothing it is impossible to appreciate the work needed behind the scenes to get a great view of the sky, a nice picture of an astronomical object, or similar, the online world in full of ingrates, that want everything and offer nothing in return. Thanks Francis for showing every detail. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
My telescope plus one order of magnitude.
Amazing video 😀❤️, thank you for sharing 🙏❤️ keep uploading more and more videos... 😀❤️
Now I see how those wonderful live images are made! OMG what a setup! RJ aka Reflections Observatory, Columbus, Hhio...U know we apreciate all of the trouble that U go through to do the live broadcasts, at least, I do!
nice setup! you must either have an understanding wife or be forever alone :D
Don't care want anyone says. It's your money and one bad ass scope. Golden rule. He who dies with the best toys wins. Your on top buddy... your on top.
Can you use the wheel barrow on this, or one of the smaller versions once it is setup? Like could you store it in the garage if you had clearance?
Have you ever tried rotating a 25 inch dobsonian that HAS NOT YET HAD THE UTA ATTACHED while on top of a ladder? Not a good idea. Also not a wise idea to grad onto the struts and rotate. In fact, it would be an ignorant idea to do so.
doc bang: OCD was certainly a condition 20 years ago, and much longer than that. The term popularly gets thrown around in a vague way, but when you have you wash your hands hundreds of times a day until they're bloody and raw, that isn't just "perfectionism".
We probably do.
But OCD was not even a condition 20 years ago.
Leave it to US culture to create a new condition every few years now.
In years past, OCD was simply referred to as perfectionism and it brought out the best in people.
A new camaro, $20k telescope...
I'm glad you're doing well.
Trop long, manque de coupures, obligé de patienter. Aurait dû être réalisé en séquences !
It's not hte 20k of poles and wheels. The main mirror in the wooden box that you did not see is worth a lot of money.
Very boring video, could do with being sped up or at the very least narrated over.
Otherwise impressive setup, very nice.
Why don't you forward the video yourself?
How are the views of nebula, galaxies, and other dso? I know you can't get the views of a camera, but can you see the spiral of galaxies and color in nebula or at least a good bit of detail?
IVIajorJacobs www.obsessiontelescopes.com/telescopes/25/index.php
Wish you spent more time talking. Bout scope instead of using so much time setting it up.
Please wake me up after you get it set up. Beautiful Scope but man looks like a headache.
Ι started this hobby with a 4" maksutov. Dissappointed. Then went to a 12" dob. Impressed. Then at a star party i saw an 18" obsession and while the views where incomparably brighter than my 12", I said then "aint no way im forking out 7 grand to go to a bit of more bright views". Today, 5 years later, i have a handmade 18" F4, enjoyed contributing (a bit) to the build process but the views are still "ok" after you get used to them. I dont think I will ever trade my 18" for smth bigger, due to its portability and also I dont want to spend another 10K on a scope. I'd rather go with a PVS14 night vision eyepiece and be done with aperture fever once and for all.
The only hard part about getting a big telescope is acquiring the primary mirror. Howd you get yours?
@@matttzzz2 how do you mean hard? there are so many mirror makers online, are you in the US, Europe or elswewhere? let me know and i give you a couple of options
if you're not OCD you're not really trying :-)
Hello Francis, How many UFO's did you watch on the Moon so far?
+serbanmike sadly, it depend if they have the idea to put spacecraft light on, or paint with high reflective coating, otherwise we not see... ;(
doc bang is definitely pretty ignorant with respect to telescopes.
At 12:35, you really seem to like to live on the edge.
show a video from what you get on those CCD cameras.
I've edited your video for you.
watch?v=v2Z3Zi6fFDc
to small for me,how about 50 inch .. jeff ..
The largest portable telescope in the world is only 42 in
Very interesting video I feel quite envious. However I am making a video on Sunday and I will show you how I put my bins out.
Nice vid, beautiful scope, but you have to get a better ladder so you don't tip over and crash your self and the scope
Want see how will be the image through this scope.
You're wrong, Shill Stoppers. The images you see on the website were taken by our telescopes and presented as is. I don't know which image you're referring to but your statement is false.
is that thing really worth 20k?
good telescope I have one that is 6 inch tube is ok the mirror is not 6 inch how to fix that
Holy crap thats big! My 10" dobson is really heavy I cant imagine taking this in and out....
+ a scope this big can hardly outpreform an 8" scope since the atmosphere limits our scopes so if ure getting a big scope get a 10-12" thats the practicall limit u wont see anything better unless u go on a hill like 2 km high....
+Dakota Thats not true, maybe for planets and things in the solar system yes, but I cannot even imagine how nebula and galaxies look through this beast.
And we see at the end of this video the domed observatory!
What else is hiding?
A gold observer's chair, automatic electric viewing ladder, complete set of prototype Nagler's?
Brings to mind the insane bass fisherman that spends his life's savings on a boat, never catching a single fish and gets mad at the kid on shore who catches his limit on a cane pole and worms...
I've learned SO MUCH with my dept store refractor I got 35+ years ago.
Nice telescope! I was wondering how hard it is to insert the truss tubes each time. It looks like it is necessary to install them in the same order each time and it also looks like it is hard to insert them into their hole. Is it hard to determine when they have properly seated in the right position? Sorry about the questions, I am thinking about getting one soon
I want one...
Erling, I just think Francis was interested in demonstrated how one person can assemble the large scope in real time (26 min), no editing, and no camera cuts to get the job done. I would have made two videos the first exacly what he has, and a short second version edited from the first to show the hardware more than the "ease" of assembly. Anyhow, I am amazed he did everything in under a half hour without really rushing.
Almost everyones comments show that "you can't please everyone so you have to please yourself". Did you make a later video of the operation of the final scope and observatory? I would like to see that.
wfhats the focal length in inches?. I am building a 16"f7 for lunar and planetary imaging mine is around 115
Joseph Rueck Depends on whither f4 or f5. 100 inches for f4 and 125 inches for f5.
Go to the website for all stats.. www.obsessiontelescopes.com/index.php
Thank God you built a dome, I was going to suggest you tear a hole in your roof of your house and leave it set up there, lol
Great scope though,cheers
Francis, nice job of assembly. About how long would you have to spend on those minor adjustments that we always have to make to actually start using the equipment to see sky objects.
You are going to be so happy when the Observatory is finished and you don't have to do this each day .... lol
I think your definition and my definition of "mobile" is way different.
There's a lot of time wastage here, I set mine up in 15....
yes in that prespective I can appreciate being part of a "real time" happening. Here in Norway the broadcasting company sent an 8 hour continuous live transmission from the "Bergensbanen" railway and hundered thousands of people followed the train that night from their homes :)
The year after they did the same with the coastal express boat from Bergen to Kirkenes - a seven day marathon broadcast that was also a huge success.
i'd never take that apart after putting it together. geesh.
that chev distracted me lol
Why doesn’t anyone actually show the images these telescopes can get. I couldn’t give a shit how he sets it up, who cares?
ruclips.net/video/IaQgP_md1Dg/видео.html this video should give you a general idea if you haven't already figured out.
I'm sort of astonished that you can waste so much of my time before getting to the point here
I have a 16" Nightsky dob and wish i had a bigger one. But my back is bad so its a struggle.
Put your DOB on a cart like I did and drag that bad boy where ever you want to. I am 73 and have a blast with my 10" DOB.
So glad you showed the observatory......I was kinda worried.
best billy
May i know, how much is this teleskop now ?
Fernando Calapontex Coat doesn’t matter. You can search 25” Obsession Dobsonian Telescope price. I don’t feel the need to put it here.
@@CollisionCourse321 Walsh, i don't want to buy your telescope. But i want a telescope that is the same size as your telescope that is dobsonian 25 ". Where can i buy it. Thanks.
my 4 inch refrac owns that
+Lin Berg Dream on. Never ceases to amaze me at the stupid crap people say on here...
+BikeMeAustin i keed i keed
Oh ok, man I was hoping you were!! ;)
+Lin Berg you use a finderscope for observing, wow!...? (lol ;p )
There is no way a 4" refractor will ever see what this can. You do not say what refractor or what you do with it. Every telescope in use today for research is a reflector. and by the way you can go on line and see what a 3" refractor can do, go to Darrell Grisham 3" Tasco double star, at Journal of double stars University of Alabama .My paper is still on the internet. This was done with a manual EQ mount with a 40 year old telescope. This was done for a physics class and had to publish to get a passing grade and by the way I got an A. I did this just for fun in 2007 and published in 2008. Read the paper because I enjoy the use of all telescopes. And just maybe you will not be so prejudiced towards what other people enjoy. you can E-mail me at stitchesadq@hotmail.com, I enjoy astronomy and have 2 refractors and a 10" DOB. Look toward the universe and enjoy the views a 4" refractor can give, really like the stars a refractor gives. Enjoy!
Why during day? :) Would be nice to see pictures! :)
Since it takes a while to set up, (you can tell by the moving shadows) it's best to get started before it gets dark, when you can't see what you're doing..
If I ever decide to buy a telescope, I'm going for a couple of things..
1. Takes less that a half hour to set up.
2. Can be lifted by a little old man..
My kid just got the Celestron NexStar 8 SE, and it's almost too heavy for her to carry outdoors!!
That observatory building looks like the very best way to go.. Even if you don't own a monster light bucket! :)
Wow, I'm Jealous, what a beast dob. Did you grind your own mirror?
Some day I´m going to have one of this. Off topic, I love your dog hehehe
I'm not astonished you waste your own time.
Wow! 25 minutes and he is going to have to lift the shroud again to take the mirror cover off!! Then screw with the shroud another 5 minutes. lol Then do his collimation! Oh well... the sun is still up so he has time!
Right. At least I'm not trying this at night.
*****
Not a bash LOL... just my jealous 'wish I had that scope' thing! I was thinking that you could make some sort of apparatus to place the upper unit and truss bars on the wheel barrow handles and transport the entire scope with one move instead of all that walking you had to do. I'm looking at a Webster Dob either 24" or 28" right now. This would be my 'last' scope I think... just mainly for visual use. Been down the 'ccd photography' road and I'm really not into that anymore. So many take pics now I can look at their hours upon hours in the cold rather than try to duplicate what they have done! I'm 62 now and retired. Just want a big scope that's easy to set up and not have to worry about computers and cameras and all the other stuff that frustrates oneself to no end!
This scope can stay assembled if you have the clearance. We chose to assemble it. It takes time but it's well worth the effort. Hope you are well! TYVM!
That is one hell of a telescope and the computer set up is awesome I bet this cost thousands of dollars damn nice system
Tens of thousands, would love to take a peek through that eyepiece!
mar504 only 16k
Nice Dobsonian. Any pictures you can share?
That is insane. Can i see any images you've taken through that?
The best place to find Cosmic Obsession's newest photos is on the Facebook Page "Cosmic Obsession" or the website cosmicobsession
With the Dobsonian mount does it automatically track? How do you take out image rotation when tracking on long exposures?
it need a tracking motor which is separate from just a mount
js7un By definition, this scope does not track.
Anyone who would post a video of setting up a dob (large or not) is desperate for attention.
And this clown LOVES attention... he drives a camaro.
Go on, spend some more $...
And you're just an empty RUclips clown posing as someone who knows something. Back to the Big Top Bozo.
Nice Tut budd ,always learning with your vids
How much did this whole system cost?
can you look at sun spot with your telescope ?
Of course you can, just use a solar filter.
Setup of 30" truss tube Dobsonian
Excellent telescope!
Beautiful my Friend !
thats awesome. do you go on nsn night sky network at all
