I was wondering the same thing and read through a lot of the comments to see if it had been asked/answered. I found one where he said "Many people do wash and reuse the moss. I would spot clean weekend and do a full breakdown and deep clean every 3-4 months." I MUCH prefer bioactive but it is not possible with the number of geckos I have. LOL. I have 3 currently, 12x12x18 for a grow out juvenile, an 18x18x36 and an 18x24x36 for my breeders. I don't have the room to do all the tanks like that but once you get them setup and add the isopods and spring tails, the only thing you need to clean is the glass and the food dish. 'Nature' takes care of everything else. All my babies are in simple tubs with plastic plants and paper towels so I can monitor poop. LOL
I'm a new crust of gecko owner and I set up his substrate and put fake plants in it but I used, soil and moss and my hydro balls with fake plants and now it's getting kind-of swamp like..why and what do I do? Should I use live plants, so it can drink some of the water i spray in there? Or am I spraying to much water? Please help me.
Spot clean daily. Deep cleaning depends on what substrate you use. Check with your eyes and nose. Ask others to do so too. A good general rule is to deep clean every 2 months. They go to the bathroom several times daily ..that should give you an idea 😉
I'm gonna have to disagree with you there burrowing in the substrate can be a sign that they are stressed out review your care and maybe add some more foilage and hiding spots or your gecko could just be weird this is general info it varies on a case by case basis.
@@zaexotic2395 she doesn't do it often and when I clean the substrate I often find eggs buried deep down. She doesn't exhibit any other signs of stress.
A low wattage halogen bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat and Arcadia’s shadedweller UVB is best. Reptifiles has a care guide with more information.
I never would have thought of using the food ledge! I swear my suction cups all have minds of their own, some have never fell ever and others fall off constantly 🤦
If it's only moldy in certain spots it's probably gecko feces in the substrate molding. Just remove the top layers covered in mold to spot clean. Rinse any molded moss as well.
No way could I use any of the moss or coconut fiber in my terrariums. The humidity is super high where I live so I'm stuck with just using paper towels as a substrate. I have no problem maintaining humidity but I have to run the AC pretty cold to get it the humidity to drop to even 60%.
@@cG-es8mb South central Texas, very high humidity. I actually sold all my crested geckos last year. I had tried several as pets but honestly they really don't want to interact with you even though I have had some that would come to me to be let out of their cage. I rent and can't afford the pet fee for a dog or cat and wound up getting a parakeet (named him Merlin) because management doesn't care about if you have a bird. It was a excellent choice as he's extremely personable and social and wants to interact and spend a lot of time with me, rather similar to a cat or dog. He's definitely been an excellent companion pet for me.
So if the bare minimum height is 18”, would it be fine to put a crested gecko in a 32 gal horizontal aquarium? So it’s a lot more horizontal space than the 12” 12” and 18” but it’s still 18 inches tall. I’m interested in getting a cresty and I already have that tank. I’ll use that as long as I know the gecko would be happy with it
Im thinking of getting one so how many times do u feed them a day also what do they eat? Also do crested geckos need any heater or anything or do they not need anything
These guys should get fed every other day you can change it up between live food such as crickets or calci worms of crestie powder food. They sit at a good 22-25 c so room temperature, but it is always helpful to have low levels of uv

I ordered the bag of eco earth but it’s a lot finer than I expect and is labeled as “loose coconut fiber substrate” I’m a little iffy about using it because i don’t know if it’ll be an issue when I drop crickets inside and he eats any off the substrate? Do you think this will be an issue?

Can anyone answer if baby tooth moss is ok for crested geckos? My crestie is in a bioactive vivarium currently but I’m upgrading her and have some baby tooth moss that I want to put in i just can’t find anything online that gives me a yes it’s ok or no it’s not ok on this moss. Thank you in advance
I might be getting a baby crested gecko soon, and I was wondering how you would set up a tank for a baby? Is it okay to have a baby crestie in a 18×18×18×18×24? Or no?
It’s okay for adults. But it’s usually recommended thst babies be kept in a smaller container! You need to keep track of whether they eat or not. Especially when they’re tiny. When they’re a bit bigger you can transfer them over. With Crested geckos it’s actually weight over age too. So I reccomend an affordable kitchen scale that measures 0.1g.
luvlost03 I mean I guess but if you are doing a bioactive setup then live plants won’t grow that great. Also why do they spend so much time on the ground?
@@-tired_plant-878 I don't plan on going bioactive atm I just wanted a more natural substrate to help with humidity especially in the winter. As for him hanging out at the bottom im not sure why but when I got him he was about a year and spent that whole time in a large critter creeper so he didn't have much space at all and they just placed his dish on the floor so thats whats he's used to i guess, but he definitely utilizes the 18×18×24 he's in now as well as his hides at the bottom
@@luvlost03 if they're going to be eating live bugs of of that loose substrate that's not very smart as they might end up ingesting it and possibly getting impacted.
@@-tired_plant-878 I feed him his insects with tongs but his food dish with pangea is placed on the floor which is why I'm hesitant i don't want him to eat any substrate. For now I'm sticking to paper towels and will add a humid hide once it starts to cool down and im going to try a feeding ledge again soon.
They key is to let them have long enough periods of drying out that the mold doesn't have a change to grow. Being to humid to much of the time allows the mold to grow.
Yes you can, but is not so right! Be a responsible owner with all the respect you deserve. What's the point of have an animal if you can't give it the high quality life level that it deserves? Just buy the best cages and accessories, is expensive? Yes! But the inversion will be once in life, also if you can't buy all the setup better don't get an exotic animal. Another option is buy little by little, month by month the accessories and later when you have everything, get the animal, they won't go anywhere and won't get extinct. My opinion. Hugs.
Hello, the whole setup looks functional and that is the most important thing. I mean using this kind or that kind of moss is secondary and the rest is question of taste - personally I do not like the vine because it looks artificially. What I am really interested in and what really lacks in the setup is lighting. I guess you are planning to set some, so my question is: What type of lighting are you going to install in this terrarium? Generally, all seems to be ok, so keep on doing. And all the best for you and your geckos. :)
Crested geckos are not diurnal, you don't need to add extra light! Light from a window is perfect for them. If they are in a dark area without windows your household lights are fine. So many people trying to force bright lights onto these poor animals. The sun works fine for my geckos, their circadian rhythms have never been off.
I would imagine there are a lot of differences between techniques based on where you are. It's so dry here, I can spray that with water generously every day without a mold issue.
How is it that you miss the natural and inexpensive solution? Your method to display vines is mediocre at best. You've overlooked the obvious. How it escaped you I'm not certain. Add actual branches into the enclosure. Crested geckos are arboreal animals that climb trees and limbs well. You can entwine the vines around the branches and this is a MUCH better solution than feeding rings, suction cups, and screen or ridge hooking. The point of vertical terrariums and vivariums is to afford the animals an environment that mimics their natural habitat. This includes multiple vertical or slightly diagonal wooden limbs in their tank. In addition to vines it's a good idea to add a hide/shelter and foliage for them as they are predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal. Multiple limbs creating a vertical backdrop will allow the geckos to make short leaps to other limbs. A small hide can be suspended atop one of the background branches and concealed with moss. This will add even more security since arboreal animals prefer height when resting as a refuge from potential predators. The closer to the top the more at ease your gecko will become. Most of the video gives good pointers, but the fact that your set up is so weak vertically makes the inclusion of a couple of artificial vines almost an afterthought of little provision for these animals. Plants can also be added. Whether artificial for easy maintenance, or live. And if you add live plants a vine that is hardy, creating ground cover and can be trained to climb limbs added to the enclosure is "creeping fig" ficus pumilo." The more natural you can make your habitat and the closer to conditions found in the wild, the better health, vigor, and behavior you will get from your gecko.
I’m so confused why it’s so common to make such bland, open tanks? Maybe I’m not up to date but I’m fairly sure Cresties like to have plenty of plants to hide around in. I have a crestie and I spent prob $20 total getting everything for her tank. Dollar tree, Amazon, Walmart, etc have plenty of cheep fake plants for at least a temporary tank. My crestie has always loved how many plants she has, often sleeping/resting in the fake plants instead of her hides, loves to sit and hunt on the flowers, etc. again maybe cresties do like an open tank? Mine loves her tank tho and it’s really pleasing and realistic to look at!
Bro this title is the ultimate click bait 🤣 it's just a cheap ass set up video with no information about the actual animal, life span, heating requirements, humidity requirements or anything. What a joke 🤣🤣😂
Guys, This is a whole bunch of crap. Just use zip ties to hold you’re vines up.. they are WAY cheaper, they look better (because they’re barely visible compared to a food ledge😂) and if u make the whole in the screen with some common sense, it shouldn’t damage anything and should be perfectly snug for the zip ties. Also expanding foam (animal safe) can be used to “glue” sticks and wood climbs to the wall of you’re terrarium. Ngl this whole vid had me laughin
Put some water on the suction cups and they will stay on I've never had an issue with using suction cups and they last pretty well

Thats so exciting! Thank you for watching and congrats on the new crestie
Is The crested gecko boring??? I really want one but I just don't know if they are boring.
Think of them more like a fish tank than a pet you can play with. Compared to a puppy they are boring, they are more of a display than a "pet".
@@AltitudeExotics are they to fragile to hold every day
Nope!
Question! How do you clean the cage if you keep real moss and substrate under, wouldn't it cause germs due to humidity?
No drainage layer?? How does that work?
My gecko loves that fern. He’s still little and loves to sleep in it
Tie wire works perfect for me hanging vines for my geckos without having to break the screen.
How do you clean a setup like this
How often do you change the substrate ? How do you keep it cleaned ?
G o o d q u e s t i o n. I'm kinda Wondering the same thing lol
Look at bioactive set ups..
No drainage layer?
I'm adopting an adult crestie soon
Nope, that would be no issue at all and sounds like a great idea for a tank setup!
Cool naturalistic build!
Can you reuse the moss? Sorry if this sounds stupid
Reuse as in clean it and put it back or reuse for a different animal? The first yes, the second - wouldn't do it
How often should I change the moss or do house keeping?
Spot clean daily. Deep cleaning depends on what substrate you use. Check with your eyes and nose. Ask others to do so too. A good general rule is to deep clean every 2 months. They go to the bathroom several times daily ..that should give you an idea 😉
Great video ..So question do u throw away the moss after its been pooped on or wash it? And how often do u do a complete cage cleaning for your gecko?
Many people do wash and reuse the moss. I would spot clean weekend and do a full breakdown and deep clean every 3-4 months.
? Does anyone know if crested or gargoyle geckos poop in one spot like the leopard gecko?
A little late but they do not 😅they will poop wherever and even on the walls
@@JenniferKira I figured that one out. Lol!
Hey with those coco fibers ima afraid my baby gecko will eat it. It’s around 6 months old is it safe ? Lol not sure if I’m over reacting
I've been putting in more substrate than that because she likes to burrow deep into it. Is that okay?
Of course!
Okay then she's probably just an oddball they're weird like that sometimes lol
1:05 I'm clicking franticly but it doesnt analyze
Lmboo
What do you do about light and heat?
A low wattage halogen bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat and Arcadia’s shadedweller UVB is best. Reptifiles has a care guide with more information.
I keep one crestie in a 18x24x36 exo
Got a question what do I when they use the bathroom in there
Does it need lamps or any kind of humitity?
I never would have thought of using the food ledge! I swear my suction cups all have minds of their own, some have never fell ever and others fall off constantly 🤦
I got mine in a 12×12×24. Is that good for my Crested
Yes indeed!
Also is a 12 x 12 x 18 OK for an adult? I know they are OK for baby's but I forgot about adults
AidanFordSword if you can get a bigger tank it would be a lot better for them but they technically can live in it
Thats about the minimum, but make sure you fill it with an extra amount of hides and branches etc to maximize the space.
Are those vines stable?
So when they poop? I was wondering how do you clean this? Just remove it all and replace it? How often?
Is coco fiber made with coconut so it safe if they eat it?
Can i use terrarium moss for my crested gecko?
Couldn't you just use a tiny little twist tie and thread it through the pre-existing holes in the screen?
If you don't set the habitat up as bioactive, do you replace the moss each time you clean the habitat out?
My coconut fiber substrate got moldy within a couple weeks is that normal?
If it's only moldy in certain spots it's probably gecko feces in the substrate molding. Just remove the top layers covered in mold to spot clean. Rinse any molded moss as well.
That could be a sign that your humidity is staying to high for to long as well.
No way could I use any of the moss or coconut fiber in my terrariums. The humidity is super high where I live so I'm stuck with just using paper towels as a substrate. I have no problem maintaining humidity but I have to run the AC pretty cold to get it the humidity to drop to even 60%.
@@markadams5009where are you from? I live in south and we have pretty high humidity.
I had a crested gecko who had echo earth as the bedding and he accidentally ate it and it killed him😢 so now I use paper towels
Hmm, eco earth shoudnt kill your gecko unless he is purposefully eating it.
How do you clean it? They poop like crazy
You could find the poop and pick it up using whatever you desire or get a clean up crew and they’ll generally take care of the pooping for you.
I’ll use that as long as I know the gecko would be happy with it
What age/size do you think would be appropriate for this size cage?
Im thinking of getting one so how many times do u feed them a day also what do they eat? Also do crested geckos need any heater or anything or do they not need anything
These guys should get fed every other day you can change it up between live food such as crickets or calci worms of crestie powder food. They sit at a good 22-25 c so room temperature, but it is always helpful to have low levels of uv
Hey if anyone out there knows. My substrate is really damp like instead of being light brown it’s almost black. Is this how it should look after a few months?
2:45 you forgot the balls and charcoal and screen before the dirt....
how do you keep it warm in there so it can stay humid
74-76 is ideal
@@AltitudeExotics thx
Thank aim actually about to get a crested gecko
Are reptile carpets good bad or trash. Love your videos . i have s 7week old crested gecko so youll see me pop up alot with questions. We got our guy in the tub for now till im thinking about 6 month old and then we have a 45Gallon fish tank its diamond shaped were gonna use for baby flokie the vicking bost build crestedGecko . so im wanting to get The things to set up his big tank we got 4montths. Is it a good size or too big?? Then well keep his baby tub for cleaning his tank or travel ,do they need a yearly vet visit or just if they look sick?? We had a chinese water dragon for 11 years ...i thought i did all The research on wich lizard to get before we got him ....but always more to learn ;)
Question ive seen this decorative moss vine your talked about and moss like this is also sold in a ball for flower arrangements its harmful to anything that eats it ...Its not alive!! It will not grow!! so bascially its sprayed or dyed green to keep the appearance so no bueno my friend..The box besides that is sick props to the company and you.. I love the variety of moss it comes with but it should come with a waring label or instructions im just saying ..Also i seen the acrylic food bowls way to much...So why i ve wondering why are you not find out some prices and patons and making you own..How about to match the banner behind you ..so in green with you symbol in the inside of the fold... come on lets make this 💰
I ordered the bag of eco earth but it’s a lot finer than I expect and is labeled as “loose coconut fiber substrate” I’m a little iffy about using it because i don’t know if it’ll be an issue when I drop crickets inside and he eats any off the substrate? Do you think this will be an issue?
can i keep cresties in my room which have LED Light strips in?
you said this is for the geckos entire life does that include substrate ive heard people say you need to replace crested gecko substrate monthly is this true?
Not monthly, but maybe every 2-3 months. If you have a clean up crew or spot clean you could make it last another couple months.
Him spends 16 dollars me: stick I will use!
Me too!
Same here!
Thank you in advance
can't you just hot glue the vines to the glass?
On the topic of crested geckos does anyone happen to know how often to take them to the vet
Looks really nice but everything made out of plastic and thats make me sad. Anyway idea with the feeder is good tho.
Not sure about that white moss.. looks abit outta place or even like someone forgot some cottonballs in there. Great vid tho as always.
Can I still use coco as bedding if my crested gecko spends alot of time on the ground and eats there too? he won't eat off a ledge
luvlost03 I mean I guess but if you are doing a bioactive setup then live plants won’t grow that great.
@@luvlost03 okay, I would keep them on the paper towels until they start eating off a ledge.
By any chance is there anyone near Sheffield who has a spare crestie tank thats around 18x24 inches that i could buy/take off their hands?
Thankyou
How do you avoid mold growing in your cages? There’s a lot of dark, very humid spots in cages that would be perfect for mold growth
They key is to let them have long enough periods of drying out that the mold doesn't have a change to grow. Being to humid to much of the time allows the mold to grow.
Springtails. Go bioactive!
the gecko drink milk?
and i can feed just fruits?
No, at all costs don't give a crestie milk. They can eat some fruits, but they can be pretty picky.
@@supernova627 thanks you😊
Can I put my crested gecko in storage box
Yes you can, but is not so right! Be a responsible owner with all the respect you deserve. What's the point of have an animal if you can't give it the high quality life level that it deserves? Just buy the best cages and accessories, is expensive? Yes! But the inversion will be once in life, also if you can't buy all the setup better don't get an exotic animal. Another option is buy little by little, month by month the accessories and later when you have everything, get the animal, they won't go anywhere and won't get extinct. My opinion. Hugs.
By storage box do you mean like a semi clear plastic tub?
Altitude Exotics pure plastic can the substrate be paper towel
Ok so if any one is reading this that that’s cool but I think that yes you can keep a cresti in a 12x12x18 it I would only for a baby
Hello,
the whole setup looks functional and that is the most important thing.
Soaking the moss causes them all to mold in like 2 days, i followed the vid and 2 days later it was all moldy lol, no hard feelings though my friend
I would imagine there are a lot of differences between techniques based on where you are. It's so dry here, I can spray that with water generously every day without a mold issue.
i want get a crested gecko but at algeria we dont have geckos😭
And if you add live plants a vine that is hardy, creating ground cover and can be trained to climb limbs added to the enclosure is "creeping fig" ficus pumilo."
The more natural you can make your habitat and the closer to conditions found in the wild, the better health, vigor, and behavior you will get from your gecko.
hmmm yes quite shallow and pedantic i do believe i will go play a game of cricket now.
@@Beamin439 lol
I thought the same about adding branches to hold the vines and I know nothing about any of this! lol
I recommend doing more research before making these long un-informed and harsh posts on peoples videos. 😅
@@thegeeeeeeeeee 😄 Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Good luck with all that. 😁
hey you didnt say anything about lighting!
Oh yeah yur right
a cat or a dog or a PIG?
It looks so crowded with the decor, very little space for the gecko
My gecko will not eat what do i do?
Taking it in to a good vet with experience working with reptile for a health check is always the best idea.
Try live crickets small it worked for me
Tiny dubias would be a good choice or try offering small waxworms. The waxworms are treats but right now you just need to get some food in there.
You can meet our crestie, Gizmo, in this week's video. We also build him a nice new home. Hope you enjoy!
16 bucks for the feeder ledge?! That's highway robbery! $16 for a piece of plastic and some magnets....pffft
Jesus Loves all of you guys
This cage is way too small for an adult 👎
Bro this title is the ultimate click bait 🤣 it's just a cheap ass set up video with no information about the actual animal, life span, heating requirements, humidity requirements or anything. What a joke 🤣🤣😂
It’s talking about setting up the tank. You should’ve already done your research before you even think about setting up a tank
Ngl this whole vid had me laughin
its not that serious people setup their cages differently
Jaylynn Donaldson Ok but there are just obvious cheaper, nicer, and more effective ways to set up.
Jaylynn Donaldson The way this guy setup was just more expensive and still less appealing to the eye..
By any chance is there anyone near Sheffield who has a spare crestie tank thats around 18x24 inches that i could buy/take off their hands?
