When I met my husband his family had gotten away from an ATI church. They are still conservative and homeschool but what started their awakening was when my sister in law rejected the pastor's son. They courted for about a month, she felt that it wasn't a good match, the dudes family responded by pressuring her, then pressuring my father in law. When that didn't work they spread lies about the whole family. My father in law came to the house and told them they weren't acting very Christian and they literally responded by having a bonfire where they "spiritually cleaned" (burned) everything that my SIL touched in their house.

The process of and escalation of delusional narcissism and psychosis in cult leaders is always fascinating, especially paired with the process of their influence over their followers/victims. I had to learn so much about both of those subjects and more to be able to help people who have escaped and transition into the “free world” and society, and as an outsider it’s pretty obvious exactly how insane most of their claims and statements/stories are, and it’s really scary that it’s even possible for anyone to have a strong enough psychological hold over people to not trigger that “what the fuck?!” Reaction much less have a strong enough hold on people to make them believe and lose themselves in those delusions and become completely dependent on them.
So glad you got out!! That’s such a hard journey!

My ex ran a cult in a way. He was a drama RUclipsr and everything had to be about him and what he did and kind of worshiping him in his chat room but it was honestly just really creepy because he had the ability to make people toxic overtime as they spent more time with him, and then it got creepy because I feel like people genuinely change their personality to what he wanted them to be and they started to believe the things he was saying.
He was very terrifying to be with and I never want to be with someone like that again. You know you're in a cult when you do things against your own morals because it feels safer for you.
