The key of B minor is glorious. The judiciously placed ornaments tell the player and listener that this Haydn sonata is not one of frivolity. Buchbinder is as always a superb pianist. Your choice of musical genre, composer and performer always draw me to your site. Sincere thanks David.

Einfach wundervoll!

The opening is bold, brash and engaging in every musical sense. The Allegro's second theme is a beautiful contrast, carrying one through to the movement's end with great satisfaction. The well-honed musicianship of Buchbinder is evident in his gorgeous use of pedal and highly-developed phrasing. His sense of style is superb. The following Menuet is a lovely example of elegance, interrupted momentarily by an accented theme, followed by the graceful opening once more. The closing Finale Presto is driven, agitated even, rarely exceeding mezzo-forte. Clean and centered runs and trills, one after enough! Wonderful articulation, and shaded phrasing. Nice ending! Sincere appreciation, David.

A very unusual for that time trio minuet 6:14, going beyond the dance genre. I think Haydn was breaking stereotypes.

9:12 how professors grade a whole bunch of tests with many questions quickly (kinda reminds me of one episode from fairly odd parents)

Superb reading - even more dynamic than Brendel & Olaffson

Actually reminds me of C.P.E. Bach Sonata of some kind. Not sure if Haydn had any admiration or interaction.

I'm just gonna say it: Haydn's sonatas are superior to Mozart's.

Interesting idea. I can only say that while putting these videos together (links to the complete Mozart and Haydn sonatas , and to Haydn's London symphonies -- amazing works of pure brilliance -- follow) I have been able for the first time to really look at and study the scores, and what I have seen is that there are, in Haydn, elements of innovation, wit and genius that I do not see as *consistently* in Mozart. That is not to say that Haydn's sonatas are superior to Mozart's, or that the music of one is "better" than that of the other. But as I learn more and more about Haydn, I become increasingly convinced that he is, both as composer and as a musical phenom more generally, at a bare minimum most certainly on par with Mozart.
