I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Some call it pointless, others call it incredibly pointless, I’m of course talking about the rock n’ roll hall of fame. With the hall of fame ceremonies going on this week I thought it would be a perfect time to look at the rare times an artist has stood up to the rock hall and told them to shove it. That’s exactly what Steve Miller did half a decade ago and were going to explore the full story in today’s video.
In 2016 Steve Miller would be inducted into the rock n’ roll hall of fame with other overdue acts including Cheap Trick, Chicago and Deep Purple. Rap group NWA would be inducted the same year.. The rock hall has long been criticized for ignoring hugely influential acts, having a mysterious governing body that chooses who gets in and who doesn’t in addition to giving fans limited say and inducting rap and hip hop acts who aren’t considered rock n’ roll.
The run up to Steve Miller’s induction seemed like any other year. Even the ceremony seemed to go off without a hitch despite Miller’s gentle criticism during his induction speech saying : “I encourage you to keep expanding your vision, to be more inclusive of women,” since his induction year had no women. He also push the hall to support music education. Then, it all changed as he talked ot the press backstage.
Here’s what he had to say backstage. Keep in mind the person trying to interrupt him is the publicist for the rock hall.
Following his rant backstage, the rock hall put out a statement that read
Rock ‘n’ roll can ignite many opinions,” . “It’s what makes it so great. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was honored to induct Steve Miller tonight and congratulates him.
Following the ceremony he would be interviewed by Rolling Stone Magazine. During the interview he slammed the rock hall for being an amateur production. He would slam the rock hall over time constraints put on the artists during their performances, what they can say and who they can invite. Each inductee gets two free tickets with subsequent tickets costing around $10,000 each. He would elaborate further on his frustrations with the exchange with rolling stone going as follows
What do you mean by “amateur production”?
“A hundred thousand phone calls; the contract work. The licensing still isn’t signed and isn’t complete. Everybody is kind of a dick and an asshole. And every artist you talk to will tell you that. You’re lucky that everybody didn’t fing walk out. It was very, very close. If you’re an investigative reporter, get fing busy. K? Got enough?
He would go on to criticize the committee who selects the inductees for not being transparent and that they should be replaced.
Miller would be inducted by The Black Keys with Miller would telling Howard Stern
“I never was introduced to the Black Keys,”“I didn’t know who they were personally. I walked in through security, and there’s this guy [Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach] looking at me, making goo-goo eyes at me or something. I walk up to him, and I go, ‘What are you doing tonight?’ And he says, ‘I’m reading your speech.’ I say, ‘Oh, great. I can’t wait to get the f out of here.’ And I didn’t know who he was!
The Black Keys made their feelings known with guitarist and frontman Dan Aurbach telling Rolling Stone “I don’t know, we read a lot of things and we got a really uncomfortable feeling when we first met Steve,” the frontman said. “He had no idea who we were. No idea. The first thing he told us was, ‘I can’t wait to get out of here.’ He knew that we signed up to do this speech for him. And he made no effort to even - he didn’t even figure out who we were.”
So why show up anyways? Miller would tell the magazine he came for his fans. NWA’s Ice Cube shared a similar sentiment as Miller according to the Wrap saying in a statement “We really didn’t feel like we were supported enough to do the best show we could put on.”
Several weeks after his investigation Miller claimed to howard stern he was planning on investigating the rock hall, but the story seemed to die down shortly after t

Concept and idea is great but those who run it and over it is the garbage 🗑 .
Its ignoring the underground underbelly that truly create new sounds and keep rock n roll alive !

Great story! Keep them coming and thank you!
Fkn Eh.! Some people just think, ya, your ok at what you do, but why should I pay you to do what you love doing anyway, with or without an audience?
The saddest thing is that Thin Lizzy is still not inducted into RNRHOF. Just bunch of degenerates sitting in that committee
Steve Miller's speech was hardly a "rant". It was an intelligent, thought-provoking statement letting the public know what REALLY goes on behind the scenes. Brilliant!😊
agreed but in 2023 thats considered a rant.
saying anything intelligent is a rant according to the average imbecile in this society
Exactly 🤘
Steve Miller accepted the 'award' to slam the entire concept. Respect for him for helping to expose the pointless of it all.
C rap is not Rock N Roll!!!!!!!!!
@@Zzus321 i bet it doesnt go the other way.
"Pointless" is the proper word. Early 70s when Rolling Stone was new, I'd buy an LP, dig it, then see it trashed by some "reviewer" in R.S. Where do they find such twits; and exactly "what" qualifies them?
Hall of Fame - great concept for baseball - stupid, comes to art (any form).
@Thomas Peterson. Sir, you will never see a statue of or a memorial to a journalist!

I love this guy
And then on the other side you have a great artist like NEIL Young who doesn't want it televised. Just keeping it among the elites .. nice Neil, Go your own way. Sure the awards are schlock sometime, but sometimes we want to watch schlocky

I don't think there is anything less Rock & roll than this place.
Rolling Stone magazine. They created a list of the 100 greatest rock stars of all time. Jimi Hendrix was #20 something and Mark McGrath was #3.
@@randomeddie185 their lists are all shitty.
@@Ilanawolf12 that one was especially obtuse. It's the sort of thing that puts RS in the running for possibly being even less rock&roll than the RRHOF.

RRHOF is an absolute joke. I’m shocked they didn’t cut his mic.
cutting the mic would have just made them look worse! they just had to bite the pillow and take it!
I think Steve implied HOF wasn't competent enough to figure out how. :P
They did read the sex pistols infamous letter which was pretty cool of them.
Another institution that has been corrupted by power and money. The list keeps getting longer.
@@randysmith9841 it didn't get corrupted. It was corrupt from the beginning.
I've never been more honored to hear an artist stand up like Steve Miller did against the Rock Hall Of Fame.
Rush didn't get inducted until 14 years after their eligibility. That, in and of itself, should be all you need to know about about how B.S. the whole thing is.
Chubby Checker still not in after all these years either.
RollingSone basically ignored Rush their whole career. If ever mentioned it was only when they reviewed a new release which they S**t on, and it was like they looked forward to being able to give them One Star. Funny how Progressive Hippies slowly turned into elitist jerks.
That's nothing. My all time favorite band, The Moody Blues, were first eligible in 1989, and were not inducted until 29 (!!!) years later. RRHF sucks.
Facts
Rush has been my favourite band for over 40 years now. I have been a proud Torontonian for 45 years thanks to them but I get angry when people say I should be happy with their induction. I tell them the RaRHoF cares more about money than justice. It is a bullshit institution that wasted no time in honouring pop and rap crap while snubbing real bands like Deep Purple, Journey, Genesis etc. Don't even get me started on how much I hate that "crap and shit-hop" (as I call it) trash. Donna Halper says she was "representing the fans" when fighting for their induction. I met her in person at a Rushcon where I looked her in the eye and said, "You don't represent THIS fan, Donna. I think it's cooler to NOT be inducted." Geddy, Alex and Neil don't need validation from these dicks but I am glad they accepted honourably on behalf of our country. Much respect to Mr Miller (seen him twice and he puts on a great show) for his words but more so had he refused like other artists like John Lydon have.
Well, there's nothing more rock and roll than an corporate, elitist institution..
nailed it
I was shocked at the amount of acts that were ignored. Turns out you have to pay your way in.
That's why people always confuse Jeff Bezos with Iggy Pop
Does anybody remember the 60s and 70s when the corporate music tards ripped off so many young artists. More of the same.
I think Miller said what a lot of people were thinking.
Good for him. 👍
When they inducted Mark Knopfler and Dire straights. Mark didn’t show up and never even RSVP’d LOL.
Dire straits*
Dude had better things to do.
Steve was absolutely spot on. RRHOF sounds like a complete and utter joke. Especially today considering they nominate "musicians" who aren't even associated with the genre. Glad he said what he had to say. You get what you see with him. There's no beating around the bush or political correctness. Straight to the point. I can appreciate that.
Totally agreed!! And I think Paul Stanley from Kiss would agree to🤘🎵🎸🎤🎶
Can you elaborate on "musicians" that aren't associated with the genre?
I really don't understand why they induct hip hop artists in the HoF. Its obviously it's own separate genre
@@apocalypsepow you can probably chalk that up to the influence of Blues on RNR. It also influenced R&B and hip hop. I don't have an issue with it as long as the artists that should be in there, get in there. Otherwise, it's a sham.
@@apocalypsepow The Blues spawned Jazz, Rhythm and blues, Country, Rock and Roll, and Hip Hop. It's only called The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because it sounds sexier than The Blues Hall of Fame and less Divisive than The Black Music hall of fame (Which it really should be named by the way.) Don't let the term Rock and Roll go to your head, dude. It doesn't belong to you and your ilk.
Who would think with the Hall induction of N.W.A that Steve Miller would be the biggest G there! That was cool!
Ha! Sweet! ✌️👍
Steve the OG Gangsta of Love Miller
The hall sucks
He was a genuine flower child and activist in the 1960s, through the 1970s and into the 1980s. He always walked the talk.
Some people call him Maurice! Just sayin!
Pretty bold of Dan Auerbach to complain that Steve F-ing Miller didn't "try to figure out" who HE was. LOL
Someone should have told him "Dan, it's because your nobody ! Your not a pimple on Steve's ass !
y'all really let your idols treat people like trash because you like them. miller made good points about the nomination process but not knowing or liking a band doesn't give you a free pass to be a dick. imagine he treated a regular fan like that.

Who the F is Dan Auerbach???
I saw Steve Miller perform in '93 and the opening act canceled due to illness so he played their set along with his regular full set and I was in the front row.
My favorite rock hall burn is when Rick Nielsen said “oh and thank you for the Rock Hall for making the tickets so expensive that I didn’t have to pay for my grandkids to come” at the end of his speech
Steve shows what rock is all about.
he sounds like a dick himself. i can understand his hostility towards the RRHOF, but the RS journalist and Black Keys members, they didn't do anything to him at all and he still treated them with hostility.
@@herculesbrofister265 The Black Keys are Jann Wenner brownnosers. I'm sure you know this already.
I've got to agree. Musical prowess, composition, theory.....there is a great deal of style and substance lost upon the ones who focus only on theory and composition and technical prowess. Steve Miller, indeed, rocks. some people just cant get it.
Hello brad
Steve Miller might be the most useless rock musician I can think of.
I love the idea of the black keys getting an ego check like that, LMAO
Who?? haha, that's probably what Stevie Miller was thinking.
I loved the direct, unfiltered, raw, brutal, plain-spoken honesty with which Stevie "Guitar" Miller delivered his truth bomb. It was glorious. Absolutely glorious.
This is why ive always been a huge steve miller fan
So you’ve ALWAYS been a fan because of something he did five years ago. Makes sense 👍
@@MrShanester117 no this action just solidified that he was not just a great musician or guitar player but also a great artist who cares about his art and fellow artists and also believes that the fans deserve better from a place that is supposed to honor the important and influential ROCK MUSICIANS and they don't they are a joke F the rock hall
Met Steve one time when I was recording an album in Tempe and he came in with his son to check out the studio. Seemed like a really nice guy.
I'm a fan of 2pac and NWA, big time, but to induct them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, before so many perennial rock acts? Bullshit
Sure, Dude.
I remember when KISS was inducted, the Hall was only interested in inducting the founding members and not later members that had made major contributions, like Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick. KISS refused to perform as a result, and I don't blame them.
Theyre a joke
@@rahlohmcdonogh4855. You are the joke, Kiss were the people's band, not a critics band.
@@Busybee65 Dead people.!Gimmick
The founding members of Kiss are the only ones who should be honored period. Eric was there and Bruce was there but Kiss made two good albums with these guys.Creatures for Eric and Revenge for Bruce that's it. As for Vinnie, Eric and Tommy and even St. John nobody cares. Tommy has been playing and I might add a bad version of Ace and Eric has been playing a bad version of the cat man. I and most see it this way.
@@scottbivins4051 you’re an idiot. Eric Carr was a great drummer and played on several kickass KISS albums in the ‘80s and toured nonstop until his untimely death. Bruce Kulick played on all of the albums after VV left and toured nonstop too. There were some big hits played by both of those guys in the ‘80s. Paul Stanley is KISS in my opinion and kept the band afloat during that time period while Gene tried unsuccessfully to be a Hollywood actor. Ace was a “bad Ace” for several years himself thanks to drugs and alcohol. Tommy was a great guitarist in his own right with Black N Blue. But I’m not a fan of Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer playing The Catman and The Spaceman at all! They should have been able to create their own characters in the band or just kept the makeup off altogether.
After the way Lemmy was treated while he was alive and is still being treated after his death, I have no use for the whole deal. He toured and made records nonstop till he died. He was a damned roadie for Hendrix before that. He should have been in years ago but instead they induct rappers. What a joke
Hey rappers are artists too and they’re exploited just as much as any other, this day and age there are more genuine rockstars in rap than there are in rock or metal
@@LimewaterMusic that’s not really the point. It’s the rock and roll hall of fame, not the any kind of artist hall of fame.
@@jonnytlong I’m not going to defend that shit show of an institution but if they didn’t branch out to other genres they would run out of candidates pretty quickly. Besides the whole idea of differentiating genres is convoluted and doesn’t serve much of a purpose like it once did now that streaming has become the standard. Like I said before, there are more rockstars living and performing like rockstars in rap and hip hop than there are any other genre. In just about every way rappers are currently carrying the same torch that was once held by people like Lemmy and Hendrix.
@@LimewaterMusic rap is not rock? Do you no understand that? There’s no place for rap music here the same way hip hop mags don’t give awards to rock bands. Rap is thrash!
@@LimewaterMusic okay, rappers dont sing, dont play instruments, and half of them dont even write their own shit. Steve was absolutely right. It's unconscionable for them to charge ten grand for extra seats.
Todd Rundgren also basically told them to get bent and said that he will not be there.

The thought that bands such as Iron Maiden or Ministry, that helped create genres of music inspiring generations of musicians, ( …a lot of them who are in) to pick up instruments and play says everything you need to know about the RRHF. It’s a popularity contest implemented by the few, and like-minded! Cuddos to Steve Miller!

One thing you can always count on, Johnny to be, well, Johnny. I laughed my arse off when he torched them. 🤣
Yep! John Lydon mentioned one of the same things as Steve Miller did: how the Rock Hall charges it’s own inductees tens of thousands of dollars to attend the ceremony!
I never do two comments but it should be The Music Hall Of Fame not The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. The name should’ve change. Please don’t hate me for this.
I may not agree with what you say,but I will defend to the death your right to say it. Have a blessed day brother. ✌❤🙏
It basically is the popular music hall of fame. Always has been.
People take the name too literal without realizing its long history of inducting non-rock and roll artists (country, soul, pop, hip hop, etc.).
Why do we care what artists/bands get into RRHOF? This organization has tried to artificially create a ranking system for something that is completely subjective. Not to mention lumping in genres that are not rock and roll. Steve Miller just exposed this for what it is - a scam!
I have one book for you all - Sticky Fingers by Joe Hogan. A fun read and it really paints Jann Wenner and everything he was involved in, including the Rolling Stone magazine and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in a different light.

3:45 Yes! Not only with Miller but 90% of people introducing the inductees are so out of context it's downright disrespectful.
The nice little statement the Hall put out was actually "Yeah, he has us right by the balls on the whole thing." Crazy shit!
Musicians are part artist and part entertainer. The entertainment part of their identity is a business that makes money. The RRHOF is also a business. Steve Miller did a good job of NOT being overshadowed by the other bands being inducted by stirring up a controversy and being the centre of attention, proving he is a pretty savvy businessman.

That is crap because they will not even put Alice In Chains up for nomination because they know we fans would vote for them immediately. We have been yelling for them to be honored for years. Good on McCready for exposing this disrespect as well

Fan vote means nothing at all to the RRHOF, all of the fan votes only count as one vote. So we the people can vote all we want it doesn't effect the total vote count. That's why Iron Maiden isn't in, Eddie Trunk goes of about it all the time.

It’s because some random institution is trying to arbitrarily determine who is a ‘rock and roll’ hall of famer vs not. It creates an illusory public perception
Then it's beyond you.
Exactly, just look at the really cool stuff and try to not look into it too much, bad enough these leftards took our INDIANS away
I like the way he stood up and told 'em! Not bad for a guy whose albums were 80% filler.
he he
There may be some truth to that. Steve Miller has a long history with rock and roll as many of the early pioneer's came to his home as a youth. So he knows the game. As they say, "You can't bullshit a bullshitter."
I love it!
Couldn't have said it better than you. 🤘
The song "Rock and Roll Hall of Lame" by Mojo Nixon perfectly sums up this abomination
Considering how inept they are, even if they changed their name to the Music Hall of Fame, all that would end up doing is expanding the list of musical artists in other genres getting shafted as well.
They wouldn't make nearly enough as it is one of the biggest attractions in Cleveland !!!!!
The Sex pistols didn’t accept their induction and , in other choice of words , told them to perform anatomic impossibilities on themselves.
😀😁😂 Yes, they were a serious load of shit.
@@Glenrsi : Hahaha , just like many already inducted.
I love him even more now.
I completely understand what Steve Miller said and I support his views. That said, I have visited the museum and as a huge music fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the day I spent there.
Clevelander here, haven’t been and won’t visit until AIC is inducted
Amen brother, they're a band that actually DESERVES to be inducted.
👍🤘
Hear hear mate! Happy to see a supporter!
agreed. It amazes me there name doesn't even get mentioned with RRHOF
@@rnrtruestories just wanted to say as an inner city kid who grew up on Hip Hop, your vids provided context and stories that helped me fall in love with Rock n Roll later in life! Thank you sir!
You are cutting off your nose to spite your face. The Museum is loads of fun, no matter who is "inducted"
The only time The Cure ever disappointed me was when they actually showed up and accepted their BS "award".
I hear/feel ya, but The Cure I respect and love as well as Rush, so the fact that those two in particular, along with Steve Miller and a few others, have done it for the fans, and in as professional way that they could or were allowed, speaks volumes as to why they are so worthy of the accolades but the RRHOF as a organization is NOT.🤘🖖✌️🥁🎸🎤🎹
The Cure were absolutely lovely that night. As the comment above said, they did it for the fans and overall it looked like the band had a blast being there.
Thank God they showed up....it was the greatest inductee performance EVER!!!
Steve Miller has the BALLS to speak the truth, and he did! Rock n Roll Hall of Fame should listen to what Steve says, but I don't think they will.
“Superiority for style and technique “ what an absolute load
The committee is about 24 people. Future Rock Legends supposedly has a list.
Good on you Steve! Keep on rock'n me!
This is so strange to me because, the day before this posted, I bought a Steve Miller Band T-shirt. I just wanted it because it has the horses head from his greatest hits album on it... and I find it to be a bit funny. The art style so perfectly represents the late 70's in America. As far as his music... I love what he did.
Love this video. More respect than ever for Steve. No respect for the rock HOF, which is a joke. Somebody else sd start a REAL Rock Music Hall of Fame.
Steve was right, it was a classic moment. Sinatra is not in the "hall" even though he started the idea of the concept album back in the 50s, yet all these Hip hop groups keep getting voted in. And tons of great classic rock artists not in
Tell me about “all these hip hop groups” that you can literally count on your fingers and who don’t even account for 2% (!) of all the inductees.
@@valentinch0 I smell a Jann Wenner apologist/sympathizer.
@@midohiobuckeyeaorwarrior9743 I just get where he’s coming from. He’s marketed the Hall very cleverly, using the controversy as the key component. Every hate comment about the Hall on the Internet directly extends its life cycle. What I really don’t understand is how so many people get upset that their favorite band is not acknowledged by some random private organization. Not nominated to be in the Hall? Who cares! Enjoy the music. Same goes for the artists. A seat at the table costs $10000? Your extended family wasn’t invited? Don’t attend!
@@valentinch0 Since you're singing the chorus of praise for Jann Wenner (the man who helped give the Republic Barrack Hussein Obama...aka the Boss's sidekick...whom you probably voted for...TWICE) you probably get hardened up each time you read Rolling Stone, then. The Rock Hall is a G.I. Joke. A vast majority of people agree with me that it's a sham. And you're actually in the minority.
@M B Ignore vch992. He strikes me as a rap-crap loving troll. Not only that...he's praising Jann Wenner. He obviously cannot see that Steve Miller influenced thousands of modern blues rockers...including The Black Keys...who are now ashamed they inducted him because he ripped their handler (Jann) a new one.
He's the gangster of Rock Love
I didn’t realize the artist does not decide who will give the induction speech! Is that true for all??
If that is the case it seems like they are missing a huge aspects of those ceremonies.
I love to see who is chosen by the athlete to do the speech at the NFL hall of fame ceremony, for instance.
I remember Moby gave the induction speech for Steely Dan. Who the hell decided to put those two together?
Seems like it depends on the bands status. I've seen some inductions that were amazing and appropriate. But the Hall has definitely lost its path many years ago, I wouldn't go back.
@@BB.halo_heir status?? If that is true, that is the dumbest thing ever! If a band doesn’t have the status to choose who gives their speech, they probably shouldn’t be inducted in the first place!
Lou Reed inducting Frank Zappa...
RnRHOF should make seats available for all members of the bands they honor.
