Possibly the most ''late 80's - early 90's vibe'' big budget movie to come out this century. I think it's highly underrated. In some ways it feels like a darker, adult, spiritual successor to films like The Lost Boys.
The cat Azi (Azreal) made me remember that old Stephen King (short story too, I think?) but that movie Cat's Eye...where the cat kills the little troll that is stealing the breath (HOLY CRAP....IT WAS EATING HER STEAM / SHINE...I JUST REALIZED THAT!) from the little girl.
I keep saving these are workout videos so won't watch this one for a little while. I just wanted to say (again) that you do some amazing videos. You always achieve a great balance between comedy and depth, but as well as showing key footage from the films, seeing you shows the passion you have for every film you review. Great work.
The Baseball Boy scene in this movie is the most distressing scene I've ever experienced in viewing a film. The child's screams and the knowledge of just how helpless he is. It's positively traumatizing in how effective the scene is.
Apparently the actors were really freaked out over the scene and when they yelled CUT he was all "Great job guys!" And they were all shook, haha I bet!

I can't believe neither of you guys mentioned the actor playing Floyd/Jack Torrence was done by Henry Thomas, who played Elliot from E.T. AND a young Norman Bates!
There was a moment in Doctor Sleep where adult Danny is in a room and he hears a ghost behind him and he spins around defensively and there's a flash of him mentally opening his box trap to prep for the perceived fight before he realizes that it's his friend and he closes it again. There was something about that moment that just stuck with me and it felt bada** in a way that normally only action heroes feel. It was a great moment in a spectacular film.

Loved this film. Abbra and Rose the Hat were immense characters. Cliff Curtis was also brilliant. I have never had so much satisfaction in seeing the villains get what they deserved - except maybe Clarence Boddicker getting a spike in the neck.
This movie surprised me at the cinema. I really really wanted it to be good. It didn't disappoint. The long runtime wasn't an issue, the young girl played beautifully, the throwbacks especially at the end were great! ❤

Wouldn’t put it up there with Blade Runner 2049 but I was fully invested and satisfied by it. Don’t think it’s enough to make me check out the rest of Flanagan’s filmography, but he’s clearly a talent
Kubrick's The Shinning put me right off..... Film had me scratching my head to be honest I think it's very overrated as a film, however, I have to say the film does capture the Atmospheric isolation and the cinematography is beautiful. What really kills it for me esp nowadays is how the film has been taken over by conspiracy nutjobs who think Kubrick is talking too them through continuity errors etc etc Saw the TV series felt dread but actually really enjoyed it and the story made more sense - it's not perfect, the moving hedges could of been cut or done more like The Weeping Angels. Really enjoyed Dr Sleep I was expecting to dislike it as many sequels tend to be turds....... But it was great. Rose the Hat is amazing...... Beautiful and sinister at the same time. The film captures the right atmosphere and horror....... And that Cat was sooooo cute lol
I loved reading Dr Sleep and the movie is good. Definitely lives in the Kubrick timeline of the Overlook Hotel days, but well done and acting spot on by all#!
I personally didn't like Stephen King's Mini series of The Shining. I hardly remember anything that happened in the series. Nothing grabbed my attention. It was just one long boring dialogue after another. I think I even fell asleep at one point lol It has it's fans, and that's fine. But the Kubrick version (like it or not) is still the most memorable one! And it's the one people talk about the most or think of as soon as you say "The Shining." That's how powerful the film is! Hell, why else did it get a sequel with Doctor Sleep right here!? Everyone knows the Kubrick version is the superior one! Overall, I did like Doctor Sleep! I can't believe it took them decades to a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. But better late than never as they always say! It's a good worthy sequel. And you know what? Stanley Kubrick would be proud! Great review you guys!
In the book the knot appeared like your normal rv camping travelling mix of people. Invisible to the average person but they had connections and money. The movie didnt explorer this as much.
Was such a good movie, but man do I wish it was closer to the book. You miss out on so much character development, the relationships are much stronger, certain story beats have more significance, the true knot are better explored, a certain moment in the ending, etc.
Classic king, secret space aliens doing bad things. Actually really liked the baddies in this one. but they were never a threat, the girl was an overpowered Mary-sue from the beginning and was super easy for her take on hat lady. Danny was never really challenged by the baddies either and killed most of them without any problem. If the hotel was used in a better ending fight. With a group of actually dangerous psychic monsters vs evil hotel ghost, that would have been cool. What's in the end of the movie is just McGregor knocking a woman around.
Top review, as always I might add. Also: Thank you for convincing me to give this movie another chance. I tried watching it months ago, but I'd turn it off when McGregor's character took the money from his one night stand, as I was not willing to watch a movie with such a douchebag as the male lead. Seems that was a big mistake that I have to correct immediately.
Good stuff! The shining, the steam is likely a form of life essence. Perhaps an allegory for the enhanced interrogation of children allegedly used in satanist/luciferian masses to extract adrenalised blood (adrenochrome). One of the best depiction of this practice in film to date. Also Rebecka Ferguson is very intimidating, I believe she does not blink in the entire movie?
A mess of a film. Trying to make it a sequel to both the Kubrick film and the book was a huge mistake. It has moments that work but they just should have stuck with the book and ignored the film version of The Shining.
As good as can be expected for a latter-day sequel to Kubrick's The Shining AND an adaptation of the book. Warner Bros. deserve a lot of kudos for doing this and Blade Runner 2049 as lovingly as they did.
Where in The Shining did it suggest the father molested the son? The only mention of any abuse was that the father broke the son's arm. Something that happened to King in real life when his son wrote on some of his writing in crayon and he got really really mad at him for doing it. He put that anger he felt toward his son at that moment in the book. What "molestation" are you talking about?
Some people jumped to that conclusion, cos when Jack is at the hotel on closing day, the magazine he'd picked up was 'Playgirl'... and it was an issue that had an article about incest (text on the cover "Why some parents sleep with their children" but that just suggests that there's some weird reading material lying around the lobby of the hotel. Also, later on when Wendy is watching TV in the lobby (there doesn't seem to be one in the staff accommodation) the movie that's on is also weirdly inappropriate for the time of day, and for Danny to be watching it with her. (Summer of 42) . Also, the TV is on, but there's no sign of how it is plugged in. It's nowhere near a wall, and there's no sign of a power cord from the TV to an electrical socket.
The molestation is showed all thru shinning. Guy in dog custom, teddy bears and the pedophile symbols on wall of Danny's room etc. True knot are the pedophiles hunting children for their innocence. BTW roses are a symbol for pedos...look into it..evidence is everywhere just open eyes...
It was good. I liked the characters. Rose the Hat was a good villain including her gang. Really liked the opening. The actress who played Wendy was interesting, she did her best to sound exactly like Shelley Duvall. Yeah, sure there were lots of member berries like the heartbeat score from the original which was way overused. Kubrick's film will always be the best one, for me at least. I don't hate the miniseries, it is what it is. I understand why it was made. And there are some good moments but yeah, it's not a masterpiece. King had the opportunity to beat Kubrick's film but nope, he failed. Some people don't even know about the miniseries. Mike Flanagan had a hard task with this one. I think he did a decent job.
Well I love this channel and its me Birthday but I can't bring myself to watch Dr Sleep lmao Picked up the Blu Rays of The Chinese Boxer and Half A Loaf Of Kung Fu - I'll stick with those lmao....I thought Oculus was v poor tbh. Vampires never traditionally burst into flames in daylight, they're just weakened
I'm a huge fan of Stephen King. The Shining is my 3rd favourite King book and I thought Doctor Sleep was great too, although not very scary. Doctor Sleep the director's cut was absolutely fantastic, better than the book. However, comparing all of those things with Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, is like comparing dog food to the biggest, juiciest steak in the world. Or in my case, since I don't like steak... or dog food (probably), raisin muesli to crunchy nut cornflakes. Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is a masterpiece.
Possibly the most ''late 80's - early 90's vibe'' big budget movie to come out this century. I think it's highly underrated. In some ways it feels like a darker, adult, spiritual successor to films like The Lost Boys.
I think we can agree Rebecca Ferguson is a beautiful woman, but holy damn, as Rose the Hat there is just something so stunning about her!

YES ! The steam and the little girl from "Cats Eye" = Drew Barrymore, the "Fire Starter."
That boy's death was unbearable to watch and, even more, to listen to.

That scene is on par with the kitner boy getting eaten in jaws for shock and disturbing
A mess of a film. Trying to make it a sequel to both the Kubrick film and the book was a huge mistake. It has moments that work but they just should have stuck with the book and ignored the film version of The Shining.
Didn't expect much from this film when I first heard about it but really enjoyed it. Great review!
As good as can be expected for a latter-day sequel to Kubrick's The Shining AND an adaptation of the book. Warner Bros. deserve a lot of kudos for doing this and Blade Runner 2049 as lovingly as they did.
Rose in the hat could seduce me any day
Where in The Shining did it suggest the father molested the son?
Love this film so much and prefer it to the shining
I thought this film was brilliant, maybe as good as The Shining.
I think he did a decent job.
how to upgrade Eric Voss
Oculus was pretty decent probably the best thing WWE studios put out.
Almost tied with "See No Evil"
OCULUS is one of the most brilliant horrors made during the last decade.
Is that the one about the large mirror and the brother and sister?.
@@Mark-nh2hs it is 👊
