I have two years to study Korean before I even start college (going into junior year of high school in September), so hopefully I can become at least proficient enough to hold my own in a conversation by then! :)

    1. Heyyy I studied in Korea in 2016 too. I just did the summer international campus at KU for six weeks though, so it was like a little baby study abroad.
    2. As a teacher, not providing any feedback literally makes no sense. The point of feedback is to let students know how they're doing so that they can LEARN what mistakes they are making and adjust their studying for future projects so that they can improve. Literally what is the point of taking tests/doing assignments and just submitting them to the void??
    3. It's actually pretty typical for language classes to be divided by skill, especially when it's a second language class (in the country where that language is spoken) rather than a foreign language class. When I taught at the English Language Institute at my American university, it was split into Speaking/Listening, Reading/Writing, and Grammar classes. My Korean class at KU was NOT split by skill, though, even though that probably would have been more helpful for me, since my speaking was horridly under-practiced but I had learned all the grammar that was introduced. (This was probably just for the 6 week summer program at KU and not typical, but I'm not sure.)

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  3 года назад +1

      Yeah! I agree! I don't understand why you won't give feedback when student's are paying to learn the material taught. Perhaps there is some societal reason, but...

    Do you have a video on your process to study in Korea? Like from choosing a school, choosing what courses, applying, how to get a visa, finding an accommodation, and just overall whole process? 🥺 really love your videos so far 💜

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  3 года назад +1

      Actually in the first episode of my study abroad series, I talked about a few of these! Specifically -- choosing a school/program, the application process, and visa process!
      Since my program was an exchange program, I didn't really get to pick a Korean university though. My American university only had a partnership with two Korean universities and, of the two, I was only eligible for the program at SCH. However, I did talk about why I chose SCH/Korea over schools/countries.
      I forgot to add the link! LOL
      how i studied & interned in korea // why i chose SCH + application process & cost (scholarships?)
      ruclips.net/video/-rB29CJclXo/видео.html
      In regard to accommodations, my exchange program provided housing, so I didn't need to find my own. I think most exchange programs in Korea work this way.
      I have a few more videos planned for this series, so if you have any questions that aren't related to the above, then I can try and answer it in the videos that I haven't filmed yet! (I already filmed the next one haha)

    Hey Natalia! I’m curious about those speaking and writing classes, mainly how were they structured?

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  3 года назад +3

      Hmmmm I don't think there was really a structure to them if I'm honest~ Every level is different and even every class because the teacher decides how they want to teach the class~ The only thing they had in common was the textbook haha
      My speaking professor my first semester actually wrote the SCH level 3 book that we used and he was responsible for teaching us new grammar every class. We did one chapter in our textbook every week, so A LOT was taught in one 3-hour class. He also had A LOT of grammar handouts that we would give us that better explained the grammar than the explanation in the textbook. (He said he hated the textbook because he was forced to write it LOL) He was a really really good professor and made class fun.
      We usually learned a grammar point, then did some practice in out textbooks or with a handout before learning another grammar point. He also always assigned pages in out workbooks as homework. Now he actually checked out homework and gave it back to us with corrections, but I don't remember it going towards our grade for the class..
      My writing professor my first semester.. She only used the book and would put student's writing homework on the board for us all to correct as a group (you didn't know who's homework it was unless you were the one who wrote it). I also remember her having us do a lot of fill in the blank exercises like those on the TOPIK writing section. She also gave us vocab lists of ~200 words for us to learn each week. (She never actually tested us on these words though.)
      These two teachers were NEVER in sync. Sometimes my writing teacher would be confused on why we couldn't do the writing exercises because she thought the speaking teacher had already covered certain grammar structures, but he hadn't.
      My second semester, the same professor taught both my speaking and writing class. She was very friendly and always taught using the book with no handouts. She also only used the exercises in the textbook and workbook. In class, we would check out homework by going around the room and sharing what we put for #1, #2, etc.
      I don't either semesters we actually finished the textbook. We seemed to always have a chapter left at the end of the semester..

    • @bluecandies
      @bluecandies 3 года назад

      @@NataliaGarza wow! Thank you for the detailed explanation!! Do you think their methods actually helped with the active side of the language? ie actually using those grammar patterns and vocabulary
      I find it so hard to come up with my own sentences both written and spoken.. no matter what material I use it doesn’t seem to be improving. Idk if it’s because that’s the way Korean classes and resources tend to be structured but it’s just so much grammar and not much of showing you how to use it. It would be nice to have a heavier emphasis on building sentences and applying all that grammar but it’s really hard to find this type of resources. Even just ‘build your own sentences to practise what you just learnt’ exercises seem to just not be effective in my opinion.

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  3 года назад +1

      Honestly, I would say no~
      There was a lot of material we needed to cover, so we didn't actually have a lot of time to practice it. While each school is different, my friends who studied at other Korean universities all said the same thing. The classes are more like lectures than learning and practicing classes (if that makes sense). Granted, I could've taken the reading and listening classes that would have given me more practice with the words and grammar we were learning, but I didn't. Had I taken those classes (an additional 6 hours of classes a week) maybe I would have a different opinion, so please keep that in mind.
      If you happen to be looking at studying Korean in Korea, Sogang's Korean language school is known for focusing more on helping students develop their speaking skills than other universities

    • @bluecandies
      @bluecandies 3 года назад

      @@NataliaGarza hahaha yeah I’be been dreaming of studying Korean at Sogang since 2015 sigh
      But thank you! I was just curious as to find out if there were other methodologies I could use in the meantime, but that makes sense that the classes had more of a lecture format
      I’ll just keep on studying for now 🤭
