Are hatchbacks the best rally platform?

Rally cars are based on production cars, and for rally you want the most compact platform available. For most, if not all of the manufacturers involved, the vehicle they produce with the shortest wheelbase is a hatchback. If you look back at some of the older cars that were essentially tailor-made for rally (Ford RS200, Lancia Stratos, Audi Quattro etc.), they aren't necessarily hatchbacks, but they all have very short wheelbases to allow them to change direction at the drop of a hat. A longer wheelbase is better for high-speed stability, but considering you won't top 140 miles per hour in a rally, it's unnecessary.
