LOL .. I started with Semi and worked my way into full Modular .. and have no issues incorporating both types units .. yes Semi is sort of a cheat but it's all about having fun and make Noise (Music) .. still learning but that is what makes it fun !! My Crave works will within the Modular environment !

I like semi modular. Modular system is more like laboratory with flasks and test tubes, where you can mix and chemist everything with everything anyway you like. But semi modular synth is a whole synth with formed character and soul. It's itself can be deep and interesting for learning and investigating it. And in the same time you can patch it with other modules if you like.

I get a lot of what you are saying. It makes sense. Here is the problem, though. Everyone always says, "It depends on what kind of synth you want". Yeah, on the surface, this is true, but when you are starting, no one knows what they want.
What I would like to see, is someone with a fair amount of modules, start putting together different beginner set ups. Each episode show the basics you would need for a particular type of set up, then show how it can be expanded on.
I did meet a guy who has a Mother 32, a Maths, Clouds, and a couple other small modules, and he was doing some really cool stuff.

I’m not a fan overall of deciding what you want a system to do though to be honest. It’s modular. It should do a variety of things in my opinion. But I get there has to be a starting point.

@@Mavenfiction Totally get that is a hard question. Not knowing makes it even harder to answer. Your video actually gave me the idea, when you were talking about a the clouds clone and a wave table. Sounded interesting, and I wanted to explore that idea more.
      Here are some brainstorming guesses.
      1. Effects based
      2. Generative based
      3. Drone based
      4. Modulation based
Right now, my modular is a basic subtractive voice, a drone voice, a delay and a bootleg clouds (it may not work right, or I do not know how to use it correctly), and a euroburo. It feels really disjointed. I'm hoping to pull it together with the zoia, but just getting to know it. (Very deep, possibly a bit over my head, but, I jumped in :).
BTW, this is my first vid on your channel. Like I said, this idea came from this vid, and you may have some of these already made. I am looking forward to checking out more of your channel.

Although I kinda agree, it’s not really straight forward. In retrospect it’s always easy to say “I should have done x”, when in reality the learning process makes it impossible to know what would be best from the start. I actually thought like you and that’s why I started with a modular system - an AE modular rig with 3 VCOs, a couple filters, a couple VCAs, envelopes and a bunch of utility stuff. Costs about as much as most of the non-Behringer semi-modulars. It actually confused the heck out of me, because I didn’t really know where to start! It only opened up for me when I got myself a Behringer Crave semi-modular too and that sort of made it clear how someone who knows what they’re doing would patch an east coast voice. After that I added a bunch more utility + drum stuff and effects (including Monsoon 😀) in Eurorack. However, to figure out what was missing I first needed to figure out what I was doing and for that a semi-modular was better suited.
To be honest, I think it’s even somewhat unwise to start with single modules, because it’s hard to figure out what goes together and what doesn’t if you’ve never owned any modules. One basic mistake I made was assuming that modules from different manufacturers always play nicely together. Envelopes from my Mutable Peaks clone don’t seem to open up my Befaco A*B+C fully when using it as a VCA, so my plan of using those together with my third AE modular VCO amounted to nothing. And while not all Voltage Controlled Amplifiers actually amplify the A*B+C actually does, which means that using it as an attenuator for the Peaks into the Crave was kinda risky. Peaks LFOs already go to +/-8V anyway, amplified even more which isn’t great if the Crave warns not to overload the +/- 5V inputs. Accidentally turn the wrong knob and I have more than double the intended voltage, yikes! Both great modules by themselves that I use all the time now, but the two of them together for my scenario back when those were my only two modules? Nope! Which of course I could only figure out by making that mistake. So, I agree generally speaking, but in practice, for anyone who doesn’t own any semi-modulars going straight into modular means jumping in at the deep end. Or possibly falling overboard near the bermuda triangle? 😂

Hi again, thanks for watching and for the input. I agree it isn’t straight forward but I do think this is what makes it worth discussing. Experiences like yours here highlight things that people may not consider.
My intention isn’t ever to really impose any particular method upon people, rather than just to offer alternatives and open dialogue like this. If nothing else it might just add an extra night of research for someone and help them make a more educated decision.
I know I don’t take any of it very serious and everything’s alway more anecdotal than factual. I just love these discussions and if it’s helpful or entertaining along the way then bonus haha.

@@Mavenfiction I think it's definitely valuable to put the option out there for people to consider! I also think there isn't really one best way of doing things, it might be very individual for people. For example, a lot of people get into VCV Rack before buying any hardware, whereas I never managed to wrap my head around modular in software. It just didn't inspire me? I use it only occasionally now, but in a very different way than I use my hardware. And to be totally honest, my first modular failure even dates back to 2003 with Reaktor long before I could afford any hardware! Sat in front of it for several hours and couldn't get it to even make a sound 😆 There is no one size fits all approach to this. For some starting out with a granular effect might work out best, others need a pre-patched east coast synth to get the signal flow and again others need unlimited copies of modules in software!

So I skipped semi-modular, and went straight into a 104 palette case after playing around with vcv rack and miRack and Drambo for months. My rack is bleeping away as I type (just got my iPad to talk to my rack via usb into intellijel’s midi 1u) and it brings me real joy. So many weird (& cheap!) MIDI sequencers on iOS to play with! I’m a _total_ beginner by the way - no real musical or technical ability (yet) but it’s all just so much fun! Working out how to make things happen, learning all the time… A few nights ago I patched 4ms’ ensemble oscillator into 2hp’s freez effect & hooked an log from ochd into freezes sample rate input and just listened to it do it’s own unguessable thing for ages.
I gotta say I had been thinking of getting a semi-modular like the neutron or even the taiga but from what you say maybe I shouldn’t bother? My wallet is pretty relieved 😅 I am waiting for an expert sleepers es-9 to show up so I can use all the vcv/mi-rack modules directly with my case, which should stave off GAS for a while 🤞
My first module was actually a collection of them - the 2hp picnic basket, on sale. Totally recommend it (maybe add a cheap VCA/mixer to complete it, the quantus ampla would fit nicely).
Anyway love the channel, hit me up if you’re ever in Dublin!

Exactly, I went down buying 4 semi modular synth clones and all by themselves they were great, but in most cases the individual components have limited access to use them in other ways - its a patchbay with intention and therefor premade decision went into design in most cases. I ended up selling every four (pro-1,neutron,model-d and k2) - the two-tier stands were not a thing that day so having 4 synth cable clutter unable to stack them left me with a selfmade shelf with books below... I kept moog m32 and dfam because I really like them inside my ikocase (big bonus inside the case is they have a power switch :) Getting individual modules with a lot of cv options will allow more freedom of patching in the long run. Every new module will multiply options :)

Practice is key. It's common to think the gear is the difference. Pro tip. Get a small set up together you like, allow one variable that you can switch in and out for other instruments. Never leave it hooked up though it needs to be a little bit of a choir. Practice 3x30mins. Or 2x45mins. Make one of the times at the same time everyday, alone, relaxed and not distracted. The other times of days and where or what your doing doesn't matter. It's important it's everyday. Even if you just sit there and make 2 sounds back and forth. If you find your making a sound you really like either stop or slow down, whichever works best for you. Then deconstruct it slowly and get to understand what's going on, why and how do you get more or something like it. If you do that for 30 days and I 92% guarantee you will stop wasting time chasing gear, have more money, hone in on what you actually like, have a better understanding of how not to let your 10k excursion happen again, make music quicker and be relevant in a convo with people that know what they are doing. Do that for 5 months after that and you should be able to play small gigs. Which will led to a little scratch to help build your system in a more organized way, you'll have more friends and get Laid more. You gonna do it?

I went all in on a 208 case filled with Make noise and Pittsburgh Modular.. had it for 3years but got really tired of patching with cords. Was making me crazy so I sold it at a significant loss, and set about looking for an all in one that gave me access to abstract experimentation without the patching. At least less so. That became a rabbit hole of it's own. Looking back, my Euro was almost a dream machine but I didn't enjoy it and I have had better results with much more meat and potatoes monosynths by putting the effort out to play them more than program them. You have to find what works for you. At this point I could put together a more effective eurorack system having learned from the last 8 years I have been doing synth music with less exotic gear..but why bother, now I am broke!

    @walrtbstudios5430 2 года назад +4

You are absolutely right, and I wish I’d heard this a couple of years back. Don’t make the same mistakes I did… but I’m starting in the middle Way back in the early 70s I wanted a Synthi A, but they were £329 then (about £5k in today’s money) so there was no way. Anyway, I got into guitar bands, then punk, and synths in the 80s and 90s were just AWFUL, and in the 00s I had no money. Finally a few years back I got a Crave, and then a Neutron, and then a s/h Model D… Thing was, although I learned a lot about analogue synthesis from them, I learned nothing at all about modular because it’s so hard to look past the ‘normalled’ connections (I did have a lot of fun with the 0-Coast though- now there’s a semi to lust after…) Then I decided to go the full modular route, and made the most expensive error- I bought a Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms, thinking it would be the portal to the full-on experience; it wasn’t. I dropped nearly £200 on that deal.
Cut to the chase- I now have pretty much the set-up I wanted all along, and to my slight surprise- and the total disbelief of iOS and hardware synth-heads- it it’s the easiest form of electronic music I can imagine. Wanna connect two things? Do so with a cable. Want an LFO? Simply patch one (or more than one if you have an Ochd). You can see everything, hear what it sounds like, and physically touch the connections. By comparison, even the most straightforward iOS synth is monstrously complex by comparison, and if you want to know what the LFO is modulating you have to write yourself a note, cos you won’t be able to see it.
So yes Aaron (did I hear that right?), you’re spot-on, and if you need someone to fight along side you, then I’m game (except I’m not- I’m an old coward with a bad back). Metaphorically speaking though, bring it on!

Yeah, I think it just depends on the reason for buying semi modular + long term modular intentions. I started with a DFAM knowing I wanted it to be the centerpiece of my techno setup, and over time bought modules to expand it's capabilities or compliment it with additional voices/sounds. It was a great logical starting point / path for me. If I could go back, I'd do the same thing. To your point though, if the primary reason for buying a semi-modular synth is just to serve as a eurorack starting point or a way to learn modular, and not just because you love the semi-modular synth you're buying, then other paths should at least be considered. It doesn't make much sense to build a system around a synth you don't love. IMO these days most people should start by spending a lot of time in VCV rack to learn how modular works and form a vision for what they want their hardware system to do. Then you can be more intentional in building your dream system, starting with a few of it's most essential modules and strategically expanding on it over time. For most people modular is way too damn expensive to dive in without a clue where you want to go with it.

I come from a more traditional musical background from playing in bands for all of my youth. I prefer to have multiple semi modular synths. For me, there’s a balance between getting straight to making the music quickly, and having the room to experiment more when needed. Semi modular just fits that perfectly for me.
I view semi modular synths as independent instruments that have a certain character to them. When I want them to play together with others, it’s easy to do so. It helps me organize my thought processes behind what to use for rhythms, leads, pads, etc, as well as helps me hone in and develop my own “sound”.
Even though I tend to use a lot of their functionality independently, I do like to patch together the clocks, sync LFO’s, allow the expression/velocity from a synth with a keyboard to affect other modules, and so on. It’s also nice for stereo effects because you can pull the oscillators out of the signal path and treat them independently.
The bottom line is, the quality of my music has increased drastically after switching from standard synths and a modular, to one large semi modular setup. So happy we all have the options to find all this great stuff that works for us.

  • @andewprod
    @andewprod 2 года назад +1

Well, as you said, It depends on where you begin. When i first started out i saw modular like a normal analog monosynth with extra stuff. Thats why i got first a semimodular (arturia minibrute 2s). You get a very specific sound out of that synth and most users could tell "oh that pluck was made with the minibrute because of the wavefolder sound or the way the steiner-parker-filter sounds. Its still a beautiful synth tho but i usually use It as It is - a monosynth. I was (and still are) into that idea of having multiple voices playing and being interconnected and everything is connected to the daw. But with the semi, its kinda difficult to get out of that osc - mixer - filter - vca view since its difficult to "break" the connections or to use f ex the mixer for other stuff. This is where i got into "real" Eurorack. I pretty much got the behringer system 100 collection (not all of It but the most important stuff) and some doepfer modules and from there on i got this "modular" feeling i wanted, of not having any rules to go after just to patch and let electrons do their thing. The sys100 collection is still a collection but i love the sound, the concept, the limitations and the looks of It so used that "vintage modular collection" in conjunction with modules like rampage from befaco or disting from expert sleepers and _there_ i knew, know im 100% into full Eurorack modular madness territory. @@Mavenfiction normally deep house and some trappy-dark-future bass, hard to describe. But since i got into modular I like to make trance and techno but also generative/experimental/ambient music. These newer genres are mostly only connected with Eurorack and honestly tho, i actually have difficulties using Eurorack in my creative "song creation" process where i would write chord progressions, different melodies, vocals. I usually need to use a plugin before just to more or less get the sound i was imagining and then later on i would take my time to patch everything up and record It. This is where semimodular really shines, when you just want a quick bass and have everything already "prepatched" and just jam with that, but then decide "lets just modulate the resonance with pink noise" or something and get the cables out. Thats a tidious thing to do on a normal modular if you dont want to be patching half an hour just to get a bass.
The more i do sound design the less "actual music" i produce. With "actual music" i mean 3 minute songs with two choruses where i would share my feelings etc. I still enjoy doing that (even tho i didnt publish anything new online since a good while) but the process of just patching but also creating percussive sounds, loops, effects, drones etc is just so satisfying and funny. The lines between making noises with your synth and writing chord progressions are difficult to follow sometimes but they are still two very different things imo, they can complement each other but they arent the same. So yeah thats my take on that. And you? Do you feel the same or do you have a different approach to music as a whole? Pretty sure in a video you talk about this profoundly.. but i prefer conversations hahah. Greets :)

I'd probably suggest something like a Pittsburgh Lifeforms sv-1. For people starting out, It's got all the basic functions in one box, and everything is patched in a way that would be applicable to a larger system if deciding to expand later on. Clouds and Beads and other fx are fine but you don't really learn about synthesis by focusing on them right off the start without learning the basics of synthesis in my opinion but people often find these modules to be the gateway drug introducing them to eurorack so whatever get's people turning knobs is fine by me.

    • @Mavenfiction
      @Mavenfiction  2 года назад

Yeah that’s a great idea. Again, it comes down to recognising that not everyone wants to make an east coast style synth and that something like granular is a form of synthesis in itself. I know I’ve said it already but clouds and beads really was just an example. I do totally agree with you though and equally agree people should just be experimenting and making music however they see fit! Thanks for watching and for the comment. I appreciate it.

I posted this higher up, but then I saw your Pittsburgh post and moved my comment down here. I see from the various replies (above) that the 0-Coast is a popular option. I bought one first and indeed enjoyed starting off there. Although plenty of modulation possibilities, I did find that after a time it has its limitations.
However, I also bought (for teaching purposes) a Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1b. With 2 LFOs, 2 VCOs with plenty of modulation options, mixer, filter, envelope, VCA, S&H, and a few more things, it's not only fun to start off with, but also very very useful in your eurorack (if you decide to go in that direction). The whole thing can also be controlled, like the 0-Coast, with midi if needs be.
Lastly, great videos you're making, I'm having much fun watching. Thanks.

I'm just getting into hardware. I started buying my first piece of gear back in Dec or Jan. I've got a Hydrasytnh 49, Minilogue XD, Opsix, Behringer Model D, MPC Live 2, Beatstep Pro, Zoom MS 70CDR (Pedal), Electro-Harmonix Grand Canyon (Pedal). I'm running everything through a Tascam Model 16, I also have a Zoom R24, which has some cool features. I'm kind of stuck on which piece of gear to get next. I'm trying to figure out if I should get into Eurorack gear, but I would like to get a rig that works asap, and then build it up. I could probably put about $1500 usd down for a rig, but I'll have to wait a bit before I can get anything else. I also thought about getting some semi-modular gear like the East Beast or Mother 32 and DFAM. I used make strictly hip hop, mostly boom bap era. I'm leaning into ambient and more textural music now. I'm trying to keep the drums at a minimum, and keep the rhythm in the textures. I love crunch and off beat randomness.

You make some good points, but you said it your self, you will have to buy 3 or 4 modules and a case straight away before you even get a sound. So I am going down the semi modular path first. I got a Moog grandmother and it's fantastic. My next step will be a case and a VCO that way I won't need a VCA and VCF etc. I patch the VCO to the Moog and away we go. Maybe you think I am looking at it the wrong way, but the Moog is such a good semi modular that I would still use it even when I save all my pennies and fully build the modular. Jumping straight in just feels expensive and complicated. Semi modular allows you to take baby steps and also gives you time to learn each module as you build your system. That's my ten pence worth anyway Lad. BTW I do patch the Moog because it begs you to do so.👍

I'd recommend borrowing a subtractive semi-modular from someone. Use it for weeks or months. Maybe buy Anton Anru's patches for Crave or Mother-32 and try them all out to learn to by doing. Or jump straight into a book like Welsh's Synthesizer Cookbook. You'll get to a point where the semi doesn't have what you need to try out all of the patches in that book. And instead of buying 2 or 3 Craves, you'll see that a modular system (Eurorack, Kosmo, whatever) starts to make a lot of practical sense (although not any financial sense).

I learned Softube Modular first in 2018 or so because I got it for "free" when I was buying Volume 2 or 3 for guitar/drums. I looked into 'real' modular but I knew if I had that I'd never finish any music - because I'd be too busy wigging out on patches. So my studio has two rules: semi-modular only and all effects* ITB. This is just so my ADHD head can finish anything at all. I need constraints, and these are the ones I chose. Still got an Intellijel Cascadia and an 0-Coast, still wouldn't go modular. It just wouldn't work for my attention span. Which I think I saw you more or less say in another video - that modular easily becomes a separate thing from making music. Wise words, those.

But now I’m back, and not just because it’s cool but because I need to create a synth that is not on the market. • @Mavenfiction

Yeah, this is the comment I was referring to that someone always comes out with on any modular video.
If you’re suggesting avoiding patching at all, then that’s an entirely separate conversation to what I was discussing. In which case I’m sure there’s an argument for far better value for money in terms of subtractive synths, especially in the Paraphonic category. You wouldn’t even need semi modular would you haha. Though again, I’m not denying that the Behringer range is great. I do agree with you.
It’s just not everyone wants to get into modular to make a subtractive synth voice though and if you’re just going to get a cracked DAW and work out your sound then why even get a hardware synth at all?
Why is it strange advice to suggest an effects module to accompany any cheap existing audio source? You can make amazing music straight away and can then quickly and cheaply get your head around how powerful cv modulation can be.
I hope my response doesn’t read as argumentative. All I’m offering is alternatives. People will make their own ways. There has been a lot of people who share my experiences, even in the comments of this video. I don’t think it can just be dismissed and is worth considering for some people.

Somehow your deadpanning, modest while also truly obnoxious - ya'know the likenscribencomment-stuff, here it just works for me, which it usually does not.
    greetz!

Yeah, that aside - b2600 owner here.
The thing that f***s me off real bad is its threshold voltage to admit a trigger input. i bought me a 960-sequencer specially for this machine and it gave me nightmares trying to use its oscillator anywhere - wether gates or triggers or the s/h clock - at least for me to this date its annoying as hell so i can relate to your opinion in some way, at least in a given modular system you have general rulesets to work with.

      Haha thanks. Incredibly funny comment!
Agh man that’s interesting to hear. I did almost fancy grabbing one of those at one point.

You mentioned doing it on a budget. That's just impossible with modular. Even a small powered case with patch cables alone will cost you more than a lot of newer model semi modular synths. There are module options that are more affordable than others, but none of it is affordable for the average 12 year old or household making an average wage. Eurorack/ Modular synthesis is just expensive, no matter how you look at it. Especially if you want a very capable rig.

Hi, I can’t really remember what I said exactly but I guess it depends on a person’s definition of budget. It also depends on desired outcome. I agree if you just want a traditional and capable subtractive synth voice, semi modular is ideal.
At 12 I had zero money so I couldn’t afford either haha. And sadly at the moment, in the Uk at least, the average household can’t even afford food shopping or their utility bills, so luxuries like synths are out of the question. Semi modular or otherwise. I feel very lucky to be able to own and play a modular synth.
Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Did he ever get to the point? Serves me right for clicking on a video with "THIS!" in the title. I no longer care what "THIS" is.

The new Korg ARP 2600 is a refined version of a 50 year old legendary synth. Think about how many experts worked tirelessly in the 60s to build cohesive synthesizers. How many failed synths there were. How, over time, the world organically decided the ARP 2600 is the best and used it in famous records and sound effects (like R2D2).
If you think you can build something better than this with your limited knowledge, you're deluded. Avoid Eurorack and just buy a new ARP or MS20. I have both.

Let me get this straight. You're making a video for people who are deciding on semi-modular or a rack system, right? This probably means that most of us are venturing into these instruments for the first time. Moreover, most of us are still trying to figure this stuff out without much 'tech' knowledge and/or vocabulary yet. I didn't get the 'gist' to most of your ideas (and reasoning) for going eurorack, as opposed to semi, due to your more advanced 'shop talk'. You discussed topics as though you were speaking to a more advanced audience. If making content for an audience of a specific skll set... then ffs, speak at their skill set.

No. I made a video for a laugh, over a year ago based on my thoughts on getting modular in response to comments I kept getting. But more so as an excuse to make semi jokes. Buy what ever the heck makes you happy.
Most of my comments do usually say that I don’t go to heavy on the jargon though and I do usually keep it simple, can’t win ‘em all ey!
