I think you might be able to put mantis shrimp(only the clubbing type) with certain fast swimming saltwater fish as long as the tank is big enough. Definitely not the spearing ones because they specialize in hunting fish, clubbing ones prefer crustaceans but will eat slow fish like goldfish. Some people keep them with damselfish because damselfish are super fast and tough.
We actually evolved from them according to scienist. As you can tell from boxers like Mike Tyson are generally speaking from the upper echelon of meantis shrimp pedigrees.
I think I’m going to buy my first aquarium and get one . They’re really cool . I’ve been researching how to set it up and take care of it . I just don’t want to do it wrong
Have you ever done saltwater before? It’s not hard, and I don’t mind guiding you through on setting one up, I’m also going to be purchasing a mantis shrimp this upcoming week
The live sand you have in the tanks rear chamber is only effective at cleaning water that flows over the top of its surface. So if you have more than half an inch then your setting your tank up for a nutrient bomb because everything that’s buried in the sand will die eventually and won’t be helping at all. Surface bacteria is only effective and can help on the very surface. Just want to offer some advice after you said you have a “ton” of sand back there. Love the vids btw
I would love to care for one or two of these. Though the blunting to a slow agonizing death is unsettling. Perhaps the spearing and slicing is more to my subtleties.
You can find live mantis shrimps (though not the peacock type) at many Asian supermarkets when in season, and they are sold by weight it wouldn't cost all that much for a single shrimp
These are without a doubt the most badass creature there is, u said it yourself they will even go around punching rocks and coral when their lust for crab blood and punching has not been satisfied
I buy these live ffor bait in Corpus Christi all the time. $2.00 a piece. 3-5 inches long. Black/red drum love em. Bait stores out here call them sea lice.
Is there a certain thickness of glass for the tank that I would need for my mantis shrimp should it get bored and decide to punch the glass or accidentally do so when hunting? How often does it happen?
3/5 Stars Blue Zoo Aquatic (so far) Received my Peacock Mantis shrimp from Blue Zoo Aquatics this past Thursday was about 150$ for their largest size. Acclimation went well the package hie came in was really nice it came with acclimation instructions for many aquarium fish as well as a drip tube with suction cup, sample food, and this calming chemical to make the acclimation and transferring process less stressful for the animal. During the acclimation process I noticed his antenna scale on the left side had a chunk missing, was surprised but didn’t mind much as it looked healed and he wouldn’t be communicating with other Mantis Shrimp. The disappointment really sat in after observing the Mantis shrimp explore its new tank and noticed his whole left club is missing it has the “shoulder” and “forearm” but the red club is missing. I tried called during their given business hours but no answer, i have also emailed their customer support politely with pictures but no response yet. Nothing on the website noted that it would coming with defect or Injury. Hopefully we are compensated in some way as me and my boyfriend enjoy him and his personality so far.
He did not unfortunately he later lost his other one found it outside his cave. He seemed to accept food pretty good until he lost his last club. We assume in transit or in the companies care it experienced something stressful. It would pace its tank. We got refunded a portion of the money.

How often do you recommend water changes ? Do you have to cycle a tank before putting them in the water ? Do you use a heater ?
Yes heater, yes cycle, I would test nitrates to determine water change frequency. With plenty of live rock nitrates should climb slowly.
You have to cycle any tank with any livestock.

I’ll keep that in mind next time I change my horses’ tanks

They are hard to breed in captivity but I have seen it done before
How do you properly/safely handle a Mantis Shrimp when changing tank water/doing regular maintenance?
net probs
I am thinking about this too because ppl say they hard to catch ,
Why would you need to handle it when changing the water? You drain water out like 20-30%, then top it up with new (treated) water.
