Happy New Year Kev. Amazing the number of different birds that visited your feeders Didn't expect to see the one at the end. Wonderful. I was given a lovely bird feeding station for Christmas so I need to buy the foods to fill the containers. Hope to increase the variety of birds that I get. I do well already as I've always put mealworms out.
Thanks, Wendy and a very happy New Year from me. Yes, it was indeed a lovely morning here yesterday when I filmed all of that how different 24 hours! As it has rained here non-stop today and the river is in full flood and we have had a wailing siren going off since 1 pm (Like an old Air raid siren) Flood Warning Siren. still going now at 6pm as the big local Caravan site down by the river about a mile and a half away is in imminent danger of being flooded out. So everyone is being evacuated from it.
This happens very often it was built as a Marina and seasonal holiday caravan park with static caravans in the 1960s it used to shut in October to March but then with these big new caravans people started to want to live there longer so the council gave in and since the 1990s it has become more and more like a residential site with these big lodges now and is now opened 11 months of the year. It's been made around a lot of old water-filled Gravel pits some of which were dug out for wartime airfields and the big marina lake was dug out for sand and gravel in 1958 for the making of the M1 Motorway. The river also runs right through the park's middle. The Nene Valley has some of the finest sand and gravel deposits you will ever find. Course it's all been very nicely landscaped now and does look like a nice place to live but it's on the river flood plain the last time it had to be evacuated was Christmas 2020! The biggest flood in recent years was in 1998 which was devastating many caravans just sailed off in the deep water and as it was just before Easter a river-side pub had put about 100 brand new big wooden picnic tables out on their lawn. These were all swept down the river in a flood surge. I had a little boat then moored 3 miles downriver from this whole site on a Mill Stream backwater and the marina manager and I spent hours when the water went down enough pulling these tables out as they had got stuck under boats and narrowboats with a tractor and I in a wetsuit and buoyancy aid going into the water to tie a rope on to them we rescued about 30+ and donated them to the local village school as well as putting them on the grass by the moorings.
Never live or buy a house on a floodplain! Yep, I think with the meadows and river down in the valley we do get a fantastic range of wild birds here and those blessed Parakeets have been about here for 5 years now the most we have had in the garden is 10! all at once.
