- What is ankle fusion?
Ankle fusion is a type of surgery to fuse the bones of your ankle into one piece. It’s also known as ankle arthrodesis. The surgery is usually done to treat arthritis in the ankle.
The ankle joint is also called the tibiotalar joint. It’s where the shinbone (tibia) rests on top of a bone of the foot called the talus. The ankle also includes the subtalar joint. This is where 2 foot bones called the talus and the calcaneus meet.
Arthritis can affect these 2 joints in the foot. Over time, the smooth cartilage on the surface of the bones wears away. This results in pain, inflammation, and swelling in your joint.
Ankle fusion is a surgery to fuse 2 or more bones in the ankle. This helps stop the pain and swelling. Your surgeon will make an incision in your ankle to work on the joint. He or she will then compress the bones together and attach them with plates, nails, screws, or other hardware. Your healthcare provider may also use a bone graft to help the bones heal together.
In some cases, an ankle fusion can be done with minimally invasive surgery. This uses a smaller incision and a tiny camera to help do the surgery. - Хобби

Very informative, lighthearted video. After an accident that has smashed up my ankle joint, my last option is ankle fusion. Im in so much pain everyday and at 35 im struggling with day to day life. Doing great,it seems to be healing well. The part where you said you was told not to stick anything down the cast but you did anyway reminded me of you being told not to hit your level but you did anyway.

I'm about to get ankle fusion surgery in about 2 weeks. Thank you for sharing your journey! I gotta get myself some curvy shoes!

Hi Scott, looks painful, although a lot of people are predisposed to osteoarthritis presumably yours was also accelerated by the type of work you’ve been doing. I have osteoarthritis in the knees and it’s a bugger. Hope it repairs well and you make a full recovery.

Great to see you back Scott. Recovery looking good. Defo flat mobile soled shoes no good and rocker sole much better for arthritic / fused ankle. I agree with leave screws unless a problem and wouldn't contemplate removal until at least 12 months.

Good advice on the screws I’m not in no rush to have em out yet and those shoes have helped loads 👍🏴
Well done Scott for pioneering healthcare for males Susan ❤
Thanks Susan I’ve finally got it done and almost walking properly already 👍🏴

You have inspired me. Mine was done on August but still in pain.
Mine was a few months earlier and haven’t had any pain since apart from it aches from time to time but no pain !! Sorry to hear that
Thank you for sharing; I'm in week 15 and am off the AirCast boot. I bought Skechers sneakers before i saw your video. They are excellent shoes post surgery, super comfy, lots of cushion. I bought the newer HyperBurst series of Skechers sneakers. I'm walking quite well now but, like you said, it'll take a while so I'm taking things easy. Thanks again!
Glad you enjoyed the video and I’ve got a new pair arriving soon I hope it’s the hoka brand where they’ve got like a small boot with good ankle support too unlike the sketchers. I’ll let you know if there any good for future reference 👍🏴

hi brother just had my hip replaced i feel your pain .big love from sydney
Sorry to hear that Stu hopefully you be up and going again soon 👍🏴
Hi Scott, good to see you moving around, if it’s bone related drink plenty of milk, you need calcium helps with the healing process. Btw I broke both of my arms in a bike accident in 1978.
Sorry to hear about you accident bet that hurt and I love milk so I’ve been drinking loads of it 👍🏴
Hey buddy, thank you so much for the blog they’ve been very informative, just wondering how long until you had no more pain when you were walking and you walk with a limp? And do you still have an active lifestyle? I appreciate your story. God bless.
Hi mark that’s for the reply buddy and yeh 7 months in and it’s all good so far with the knowing it’ll never be the same again that’s for sure but certainly not in any pain for sure and can walk straight again just a bit slower. Possibly having the screws taken out in a few months too. I’ll do a update after that 👍🏴
All the best
Cheers buddy 👍🏴
Good luck bud
Cheers Luke I’m walking without the stick now so it’s looking good 👍🏴
Glad you sorted mate ,hopefully you getting better soon 😊
Yeh few months yet I reckon 👍🏴
I feel for you having had an inter medullary nail op when i smashed my lower leg up.
Remember that pain is part of healing and the bone will heal faster if you aply weight.
I did private physio and basically did my own thing post op, you can do more than they will advise you.
I will keep my im nail and screws until the day i drop, no way i want an op again.
Just been for another 15m walk 2nd half no crutches and those sketchers on my feet and all went well. And yeh the screws can stay there 👍🏴
get well dude. let it heal.
All takes time and thx 👍🏴
February 9, 2024.....Thanks for posting this video. I had the calcaneus fused to the inner and outer bones of the ankle ten days ago and go back for my first post op visit on Monday the 12th. If everything looks good, I'll get a hard cast and will have to return every two weeks for a new one and eventually a boot like yours.
My procedure DID NOT include the tibia and talus as yours did, and I'm thankful for that so my range of motion in the flex won't be as restricted as yours, but the side to side motion will be affected. I'm 72 and in good health. Your video has inspired me and I MAY TRY doing a video of my own.
I hope you're healing process is on track. North Carolina, USA
Good luck on Monday hope it goes well and I’m going to do a follow up video next few days to give my later opinion of the op and yes I really do have minimal movement it’s a shame but I’m pain free 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping This past Monday's visit went well. Stitches were not ready to be removed, so another splint until the 22nd...then hard cast. I'm SO GLAD that your pain has gone!! If your pain was like mine, I can't wait to join you in celebrating!
Feel for you , I tore my achilles nothing compared with what you have got, but a similar recovery although a soft 'boot' with an angle to stop the achilles stressing and they gradually changed the angle. I did find when I was out of the boot, (which I had been using with crutches) I did seem to have pain in different parts of my body which I guess was to do with walking a bit one sided with the boot and crutches, that took quite a while to go but I just kept doing stretching exercises and that seemed to help, all the best
Hope it’s on the road to recovery soon as same to me, this cold air doesn’t help that’s for sure it’s all stiff atm 👍🏴
I had several sessions of physio at the hospital they show you what too do then give you a sheet with the exercises on it, to be honest I found that walking every day and finding a set of steps to climb up and down helped the most, it takes a while, just keep at it and you'll get there I'm sure. All the best@@tidybrickslandscaping
Hi mate that looks painful I'm currently waiting for more surgery losing another finger at this rate I'll only be able to count to 6 but hey ho we dust ourselves down and carry on be careful mate when pointing your foot to the east you'll pick up absolute radio 👍
Hopefully your surgery goes well too all the best in that as for the radio I’ve managed to get fix radio podcasts which I’m on anyways 👍🏴

Good to see you up and about Scott 👍
You going back to work or still retired ?
No more dodgy dance moves then 😂😂
Not sure yet most likely the 2nd dunno 👍🏴
thank you for the info as my surgeon did mansion fusion to me i didn't understand as i work standing up all day and its movement and play in the foot are you able to do the same activity's
Not really know my ankle gets tired quite quickly it’s hard being upright all day hope it goes well for you 👍🏴
For the past 15 years, I've relied on a combination of two Naproxen pills (painkillers) and one Lansoprazole (to protect my stomach from the Naproxen's effects) to manage the pain. It made a significant difference in my life, but relying on medication for so long takes its toll. That's why I decided to explore other options and consulted a surgeon about the possibility of joint fusion.
To my surprise, the surgeon suggested a steroid injection instead, considering me a bit too young for major fusion surgery. I was sceptical, but I agreed. To my amazement, the injection has been incredibly successful. I haven't needed any painkillers, and I'm completely pain-free. In fact, I recently participated in an 18-mile charity walk without any discomfort. It's been a game-changer for me.
However, there is going to come a time when I will be in the same boat as you and will need to have the joint fused.
I wish you a speedy recovery, sir. And pain-free walking.
Sorry for the delay and firstly I’m glad the steroid injection worked for you great technology as for me I was old enough for the fusion and I’m 5 months in now and it’s still not perfect by far apparently depending on you perfection it can take 12 months or so which I can see this more likely for my age bracket and landscaping business, I saw the surgeon last about 2 months ago and he said he’s happy with the op and I can if wanted have the screws taken out at some point which I might actually do depends on my next meetings questions on it.
Hope it all goes well for you in the upcoming future 👍
I did Everest base camp a few years ago for charity too won’t be doing that again so glad it did it post op

I actually had to move into my folks for a while my landlady wanted me out to put rent up 👍🏴
Thanks for that , hope your well. Is it still ok? ..im a 38 and a pe teacher, sport and gym every day, ankle pain last few years after a second break in the same ankle. Ignored it but mri said today very bad arthritis now in subtalar joint which makes sense, ankle fusion was mentioned! Dnt know if i could do the year out , the thought kills me especially with my young kids 😔 hoping to find other solutions or to continue to grizz it.
Sorry to hear about that and my first words are I haven’t had any pain since the op it’s been helpful but when it’s fussed that’s it it’ll never be the same just got to suck it up and steps will always be awkward. I did do a follow up video btw 👍🏴
Hi Ave just had my left ankle fused together and boy is it painful like yourself the cast was a problem had to have it changed within the first 2 days now got a much lighter cast on I am interested in were you got your trainers from as I cannot seem to find any places that sell rocker bottom trainers thanks
Good point I got them from sneakers the first pair now I’ve bought some from hoka and there’s great for pre op shoes but you’ll possibly have a swollen ankle after the op so you’ll need a size up hope that helps and thx for watching 👍🏴
Thanks mate. Ive got the op coming up soon. Did they offer you cortisone injections before the op? Are you glad you had it done? Thanks again, Nick
No offer of any sort just straight into it and now about 6 months later there’s hell of a difference no pain ever just ackes still need to build my calf muscles up again
Seeing the surgeon next week to talk about taking the screws out as it’s a option and I might actually take it even though it’s adding more time to total recovery
My thoughts are full 12 months for total recovery but could be less if you’re sat at a deck all day not physical work
Hope that helps 👍🏴
Worst part for me was the plaster cast 6 weeks that was shit after that all good 👍🏴
@tidybrickslandscaping yeah that's great. Thanks for replying. How do you build Calf muscle without being able to flex your ankle?
@@nickjordan6069 lots of walking apparently and doing steps which is hard as it’s limited movement which is very noticeable maybe about 20% compared
And really doesn’t effect me much to be honest 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping thanks for your time. Good luck with the recovery
Wishing you the best for a great recovery from your op Hoka is another good brand of trainers that was recommended to me after my ankle fusion from foot and ankle surgeon also my podiatrist ! I had my ankle fusion , foot reconstruction Sept 18 , 2019 after 10 years of agony I had to wear a brace for support and steroid injections every 4 months / After op I had a very heavy large plaster for 2 weeks my leg had to stay elevated only moving for bathroom / then air boot for 6 weeks no contact with floor for 4 weeks then last 2 weeks only walking on the ball of my foot / I had a scooter to get around the house that was a god send ! It took 6 months before I could go back to work as I’m a hairdresser on my feet for long hours it wasn’t easy but I got there the surgery was worth it I couldn’t go on the way it was ! I’m doing great now ! I highly recommend following Drs orders to the word it worked for me / Things for me could be slightly different as I’m in Australia !
Well I’m glad you had a success pre op with good recovery ❤️🩹 perfect and as for that hoka shoe yes I found out from someone in the comments about hoka so I’ve bought my first pair not so long ago and there great 👍🏴

I may need this in the future but, like you, I don’t think it can do the cast. I would be in a massive panic attack
If that time comes let them know to work with you and try help you if your plaster claustrophobic like me.
A linen sock will allow you to use a ruler more effectively without possibly pushing loose cotton further down without the sock.
I found out the hard way and pushed loose cotton down and compacted areas and made it worse

Why did you chose fusion over joint replacement?
Apparently fusion would actually cure the arthritis 👍🏴

I'm 52 had a Ankle fusion operation in 2023 ..
I have had few things going on .Deformity of the foot .Plus Arthritis in my foot ..I have yoo use a stick most of the time ..
I do try and walk a bit without it .I'm in no pain but walking is difficult still.
Anybody the same as me .
I will probably have too use a walking stick for life ..
I didn't have phiseo bit I do lot of swimming Aqua fit and it helps my Ankle.
The stiffness will never go away ..
We’re in the same boat looks like and just glad the pain has gone away for now as for the walking stick recently I’ve started using the one stick for smaller journeys but around the house I’m ok without. I haven’t done any swimming yet maybe I should as that’s a form of physio as well I guess.
And certainly don’t have the ankle movement I had before the operation but I’m finding that manageable
I’m about 5 months in now and I think it’s going to be a few more months yet before I notice any big differences
Seeing the surgeon again in a few weeks to talk about having the screws removed
Take care

Had it done september 20th 2023. 12 weeks in cast. Bone healing after this was good. Can't walk like he did at 13 weeks without crutches, im at 15 weeks now still need support but in normal shoes. I'm only 31. Seems to be a long recovery for us all. You might need help from shoes for "rolling" the foot like he discussed. Also to avoid unneeded stress on other joints over the long term.
@@ricardo8268 wow 12 weeks in a cast that’s twice as long as me I only had 6 weeks and 6 weeks in a boot as for shoes try something from sketchers as the surgeon recommend for me. I’m about 6 months in now and I’m walking better but still a struggle. Hope it goes well for you 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping After 6 weeks its new cast with shoe that can be attached to it. Can walk on it same as the boot its just not removable. Most likely an insurance thing why boots arent used here, operation was done in the Netherlands. At 12 weeks nurse removed the cast and forced me into wheelchair, warned 5 times not to step on it until after xray and docters approval. Never seen any of those air boots in person either in europe.
