Alex and Matt break down two of our all-time favorite recreational carving skis: the Stockli Montero AX (formerly the Laser AX) and Kastle's MX83.
Both of these skis have been named among the best carving skis in our buyer's guides, and both come from impressive backgrounds. Stockli and Kastle are both premium brands who have been making strong, fast skis for a long time.
You can find these skis, and many other carvers, at www.powder7.com/.

bought myself a pair of kästle mx83-s and i have to say they are phenomenal! Before i bought the skis i read from somewhere that "it feels like you are sitting on a passenger seat" and that's the only way to describe it. If you can read the map well you can pretty much let the skis do the job. 10/10.

Swiss versus Austrian. Nice. Top of the crowded field of skis.

i would love to get on both of those skis.. it would have to be a cold hard pack/groomer day.. my stockli 88s are great on hard pack/groomers but suck on soft snow.. my kastle fx96 hp with no metal i am planning on skiing tomorrow and the turning radius on them is 18.1 and my stocklis are 19.. the kastles seam to be more poppy to where i can get from edge to edge faster.. maybe that is because there is no metal.. is what you guys think?
Now my DPS F100 RP Wailers.. I love these skis.. I would compare them to the Salomon QST 106s that I demoed.. The difference between these skis is that RP has that short turn radius.. That difference makes all the difference for me.. When I get around people it is very easy for me to get on and off the edges.. It is fun to turn those skis.. I will actually go to where people are just to make short turns.. I can also make HUGE radius turns.. So the part that maybe you guys can help me out with that I probably love most about the skis is this.. I went skiing last Tuesday and it was 5 degrees when I started so the snow was very grippy.. When I left (a couple hours later) it was 27 degrees and not as grippy.. I have been keeping my stats with SNOW TRAX for the past 2 years and I had my top speed (I can't drive 55;) Faster than my stocklis.. Believe it or not there is actually more there with those skis..
i also want to say this.. my guess is that my kastles have the similar poppiness to the poppiness from the DPS alchemist or pagoda construction..
Do you guys have any thoughts on anything i said?

In general I have always felt (as a brand on the whole) Stoklis are smoother and damper, Kastles have more energy. I prefer the feel of the kastle overall. But can't go wrong with either!

Yeah, super cool that you've gotten to closely compare several pairs of awesome skis. That is interesting about skiing fast on the Wailers vs the Stocklis. Skiing fast isn't always about what's in the ski; sometimes it's just as much about what you're comfortable on. You're going to push harder on a ski you feel more comfortable on. Sometimes that can be wide skis, too, as that added surface area can make people feel even more comfortable pushing them hard. Just some extra food for thought. Let us know if you have any questions we can help with!

@@powder7skis the one thing i am kind of struggling with now is learning how to scrub off speed when my skis float.. i am used to using straight skis in the powder and sinking in and the powder slowing me down.. now riding above it i am going a lot faster.. i think it is just going to take some time for me to get comfortable

Would the Montero ar be a fair comparison to the mx83?

The Montero AR will lend itself to a longer turn than the Montero AX, making it feel a bit more similar to the MX83 in terms of what kinds of turns both skis like to take, but I still think the Montero AR feels a touch more accessible than the MX83 with the flex torsion metal tech in there. It's still very supportive and planted at speed. Like Matt mentioned, the MX83 is loaded up with energy when you come out of a turn with all that camber. -Alex

Love the sound of Kastles performance, but those tip graphics will keep me from buying. Their graphics design needs to join us in the 21st century.

I like them. Much more classic and timeless.

Most of the time the graphics hide under a skin of snow, so the design is just to look good when they are stored.
