Today, Alex and Matt put the Salomon Shift MNC 13 head-to-head with the Marker Duke PT 16, the two leading hybrid/freeride bindings on the market.
Both of these bindings are designed to be skied downhill like full-on alpine bindings. Yet they both also have tech fittings in the toepieces, allowing them to be used like tech touring bindings for alpine touring. This versatility has led to the explosion of a whole new category of ski gear: hybrid aka freeride touring aka 50/50. Whatever you call it, it's pretty revolutionary.
Note: The Salomon Shift 13 is also available in an 11 DIN version, while the Duke PT 16 is also available in a 12 DIN version (for 2022-23) and will be available in 11 and 13 DIN models for 2023-24.
You can find both of these bindings, along with many others, at www.powder7.com/

I would only like to say thank you for these honest reviews based on your personal experiences. Most informative video for the ones in the market for one of these bindings.

Great review. The information and experience you have with each binding was a big help in my decision about which binding to purchase.

Excellent review! Love the honesty. I purchased my shift/QST106 in late 2019 and definitely experienced the toe piece height adjustment issue a couple times before getting it dialed in just right. No issues once toe piece set correctly and honestly feel very confident in the bindings now, having skied all sorts of terrain (bumps, trees, steeps, drops, etc). Would highly recommend shift binding to anyone.

Thank you. I had the Salomon Shift 12, sold my skis with bindings. My problem was freezing in the toe piece which was a critical problem. I believe Solomon have acknowledged this. The purchaser broke the mostly plastic toe piece. He was not happy. I now have the Dukes but will not use them until December as they are in Japan (I live in Australia, ski in Japan).

@@Crqcks I have Scarpa Maestrale XT 27s ski boots the model with the Latch and Steel Wire over the instep. Turned out that they are TOTALLY INCOMPATIBLE with the Duke. Sold the skis and bindings at a very large loss. So check if your ski boots are compatible. Big shock. Have fun in Japan.

Duke for quick opportunities and slack country, low-tech two pin for touring and any other skiing.

Shift provides everything that Marker offers, including excessive weight, cheap materials, but also adds in random pre release during downhill to add some excitement.

I bought the duke for me and my son - mainly because we didn’t do any touring yet and want to give it a try.
But what do you mean by the „automatic toe hight adjustment“..? Our dukes do have a screw for manual adjustment and I used it for setting it up for our boots.

Do they feel like normal freestyle bindings in the downhill or are they completely different?

And one more question... do you think there is a newer better option now? And what changed at the salomon shift with the s/lab?

Shift is market leader for a reason. Shift is obviously the best all round binding for anybody who likes touring but values performance on the Downhill. Only the most weight conscious will want anything else.

They both suck but the duke is better. I know a lot of people with pre-release shift issues.
