- Whatsup my RUclips family! This is a quick guide on how to clean your canister filter. Cleaning the canister filter is something that must be done if you want to maintain a good balance in the aquarium. This will make sure your Canister filter continues to run in good condition. I have a Penn Plax 1000 Canister filter on my aquarium and I haven’t cleaned it in a while. So I figured why not make a video showing me doing so and maybe it could prove to be helpful for anyone considering upgrading from a hang on the back filter to a canister filter.
Below I added links to Amazon to where you can find the same filter I have and also the activated carbon I used to help clean the water. ( which there will be a review soon on the results )

Video is nicely done! Thank you for including all the necessary steps!
Very helpful
Thanks man! Have the same filter and just now getting back into it after several moves/months and a new tank. Really appreciate the quick tear-down/setup!
This helped me out tremendously lol. I just recently got a second hand aquarium and it was pretty full of sludge. I added a layer of mechanical filtration via ceramic inside each layer underneath the filter floss as well as the carbon too. Followed this exactly and it helped out a LOT. My water after rinsing though came out about 300 times dirtier though 😂
I just bought one on Craigslist for $25!! It’s working great so far
Wow that's a steal congrats
That tank is GORGEOUS!
Thanks so much man, just got one a few weeks ago and had to go in for a loach lol. Great video, straight to the point and easy to follow instructions. Earned a sub for sure, keep going bro
Thanks bro
Bottom tray, black then blue sponge filter media,, 2nd tray green then 1 filter floss. top tray, bio balls, bio beads, lava rock, as much porous material as you can fit, then top and lid.
That's 4 layers of mechanical in 2 trays, and 1 full of biological filtration. best of all words. If you need Chemical filtration, like a phosphorus removal pad, or carbon,, then layer that on very top of top tray. Those are my recommendations for the pen plax filters anysize. Enjoy the journey!
Thank you. So new to this 🤣 as I put it together, I knew I was gonna be clueless
Great how-to video, thanks.
Very helpful! Thank you for posting
Great instructions! Thank you !
Very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks for posting 💕
Great job. Thanks
I'd suggest you add lava rocks and pumice on the middle layer to do additional biological filtration.
I def wanted to add something there as it seemed I could be helping keep my aquarium that much more filtered. I will prob try the lava rock
nice clip. thank you
Good video
Appreciate it ty!
Great Video, I just did all these steps and I have water leaking from the lid any suggestions
Because of you, I think I need to but this filter…
I have this filter. First time I have changed the floss and reassembled. I have 2 rings exactly alike that look like one would connect to the lift clip. I'm wondering if these 2 rings are for the hoses?! ... or the top of all those trays
What way does the water flow? I just bought my 1st canister filter its a 700. I have 4 Dojo Loaches in a 46 bowfront. I use filter floss and sponges in 1st tray but I have the extra fine floss and it says to have water flow thru the soft side 1st. I can't find anywhere where it says if the water flows top to bottom or bottom to top.
I think the video was excellent I really liked it but you could leave out the background music it was too loud thank you Barbara Payne
Propeller housing and propeller?
How often do you change the filters?
I really only have to change them every 6 months. I have such a small bio-load in a big tank i can go longer than usual
you can buy 6 $ bag of lava rock at homedepot
