the filter was set up in the wrong order, should by Mechanical, then Biological then Chemical , other then tahat great video

Well, I now know how to set up a make-shift filter system for an alligator.

Thanks for this video - I will be purchasing this today for my 60gal freshwater aquarium. I have used tetra whisper filters for years and need to upgrade. This will be my first ever canister filter and I trust your judgement so I am going w this brand and model :)

Great video. I also use a fish safe lubricant on all rubber seals/parts to prevent them from drying out and cracking which causes leaks.

Emily, If you are still answering comments: I just purchased the Cascade 1200 which has 4 trays. Any suggestions for what I should put in all 4 layers for a full grown Eastern Painted Turtle living in a 55 gallon tank?
Also, I noticed that you laid floss in the bottom of the Purigen tray as well as floss in the Bio Tray. Is this the proper way to set up each layer? I usually see the chemical and bio layers set up with no floss.

In about 5 years I plan on having a kid of reptile petting zoo for school functions and stuff, what kind of paper work did you have to go through in order to have your alligator? I probably won't have an American Alligator but I do want to get a Dwarf Camien and want to be with-in the law.
The best thing to do is check your local state AND city laws to see what they require. City laws overrule state laws. For example, if the state allows caimens but the city does not, you can't have one.
Did you have to get special insurance when you got your alligator or would my state or city let me know all that? And by the way he is one beautiful gator.
Hey what do you use to drain the pool and put the water back in? And how did yuu attach the cage to the pond or secure it? I have a monitor. Does this filter make the water completely safe to drink even if the monitor poos in it? Thanks

Question: Do those water heaters work more efficient than submersible water heaters in fish tanks?
I realize this video is older but as someone who has only ever used filters for fish I was wondering, do you not need a cycled filter for a reptile? Since they don't live fulltime in the water? Not that I'll ever have an alligator or anything but I'm curious.
Nope, cycled water isn't necessary for a reptile. You may get "new tank syndrome", but the amount of waste they produce should clear that up fairly quickly. Axolotls benefit from cycled water though.

I believe it’s different because the fish are breathing in the water and what’re waste is in it no? Whereas this alligator is breathing air so whatever waste is in the water doesn’t affect him. I know for fish ammonia burns their gill tissue and nitrite hinders the blood from carry oxygen(I think).
I have a question so I finally got the cascade 1500, but I accidentally started the motor before priming it. well what I did was forgot to flip the switch so water could come. I had the motor running for a minute I believe and then realized it was the switch. So I flipped it open and pushed the button over and over till it reach the top of the motor and bam worked. Just wondering if I did any harmful damage or don't worry about it?
I installed a similar filter, the 500. Looks like that but smaller. Mine makes a very slight crackly noise sometimes, intermittent. Like rice krispy sounding lol. Is that normal for the first couple days?

I have never used purigen before. How much should I get? Does it come in a bag or do I need to purchase that as well?

On amazon for the cascade 1000 it said up to 100 gallons so is it for 500 or 100 gallons or is it 100 but can be used for 500 as well?

Yes he was hissing a bit because he was anxious to get out of the bin. We've never gotten bit by him because we know how to read his body language, however they are definitely wild animals and should not normally be kept as pets. I have a problem with my canister. it's about the same level as your pool and where the canister is (roughly on the same level) however, mine makes a weird buzzing sound whenever I plug it in. I filled the filter up with water already like what you did, as well I also primed it too. Any tips?
do you know what size the tubing is? or the I.D. of the hose? im trying to get some lily pipes for it and forgot
I just bought this filter. And for the life of my I cannot find the “o-ring.” Did you buy that separately? Or did it come with the filter?

The tubing has a strong smell of plastic, should I do something to get the smell out or will it be harmless to my turtle?

Actually you set it up wrong, the mechanical goes on in the bottom tray with the filter floss, next tray is the bio media,top tray should be carbon/ purigen
Lol I was just looking around at a few videos to confirm this. I was worried I set mine up wrong, and confirmed her set up is incorrect. Carbon kills off the bio by stripping chemicals away from it, and that wont be able to convert your ammonia.
That's true for carbon, but the best way to place purigen is between the biological and mechanical filtration.

I'm really lost on the practicality of having a filter like this for an animal of this size in a pool that big. What exactly is it filtering out? I have a filter of this size in a 46 gallon turtle tank and it requires every bit of it's power to keep it clean. Is the alligator defecating in there? Eating in there? What is the water change frequency even with the filter? Can you explain how all this works for you? Thanks.

Yes! I use it and it works great. I have a 100 gallon for my RES

Can someone help, I cannot get the filter to prime I tried both methods and nothing. I have a set up just like hers. My tank is on the ground.
My baby male hognose ate last Thursday and he won't eat today

Hognoses can be picky eaters, try scenting the food with fish, but do not feed him the fish (I think tuna works, maybe salmon)

What's with there sink
Another point you can't SUGGEST at people do. Wash or rinse something for aquarium with BLEACH. Never use chemicals in the saltwater or freshwater stuff
