- LLYT here, in this video I unbox and setup a Polar Aurora 4-Stage External Canister Filter with 9-watt UV Sterilizer (HV-304B). This is a classic budget canister filter and I finally got one for myself. It is only $80 and boasts a 525 GPH flow rate. Checkout how I set it up on my 75 gallon turtle tank and see the HUGE mistake I made when setting it up! Enjoy!
Products I used are provided below. Amazon links are affiliate links of which I make a tiny commission if purchased from at no extra cost to you! Thanks for watching!

Yes! There is a new setup for my aquarium as you will see in the video, sorry for the tease, I’ll be posting videos explaining it in the near future!
You should totally do an updated review !!
Not a bad idea!
Thank you so much for sharing all this precious info
I was making the same mistake but went you came back with the video and explain i made the same mistake thank you so much you video was great and the information you friend Wilsonbosque
Thanks so much for the installation video. It made installing my first cannister setup a breeze for my aquarium
Great to hear!
Great review. I am a 10 year user of 2 Sunsun filters and have come to know how to avoid some of their problems such as leaks. I recommend using a small canister pre filter with foam filtration. I clean these weekly and only need to open the main filter every 6 months.
Nice! Not a bad idea, my turtle would definitely eat a foam prefilter though, I could attempt to protect it though. Thanks for the comment and advice!
@@LongLiveYourTurtle the pre filter is also external. It is connected before the main filter
Thanks followed your instructions and everything went great!
Glad it helped!
Trying canister filters for the first time for a bow tank
Can you please do a performance review soon that would be nice 👍🏻 no leaks or anything have come up?
Good idea! I'll put it on the list.
okay, i have been messaging the company for like 3 weeks, replaced parts and stuff and finally i gave up and turns out they sent me the wrong directions... thank you for posting this cause otherwise i would not have a filter XD
Glad you figured it out, thanks for the comment :)
Kev from Kaveman Acquatics suggests using polyfill and I saw someone use a sump pump to have water go through plant and soil or something on the RES subreddit
Thanks for your reviews! I have 2 questions…. Do you know if this has any leaking issues like the SunSun? And would you prefer this or a Cascade 1000 for a 40 gallon tank?
Great video! Helped me decide on buying filter (except I got the one without the UV) I was surprised you put the broken glass part in, good job putting in follow up on cracked glass. How long did you wait to clean this filter? Is filter still working great for you after several months? I bought one when it was on sale a couple months ago (when I first watched your vid) but only just put it on my 100 gal stock tank. I also run a penn plax cascade 1000 on same tank. I moved my eheim 2217 from that tank to new 40 gal breeder I just got for new turtle. I find running 2 canister filters at once is ideal for large turtle tanks.
I was also surprised I did that haha. I clean the filter about every 2-3 months. The extra bio media and second filter really helps breakdown waste and keep the water clean with just doing regular water changes. It is still going strong. The only thing I would say is the noise can be a bit louder than other canister filters. If you work from home and you are next to the tank this could get annoying. Otherwise, such an amazing deal! Totally agree, go big with turtle filters, you will thank yourself later. Thanks for the comment and yay new turtle :)
have u considered the fluval fx6 canister filters?
Budget wise I see why he went with that filter fx6 are expensive
I guess if you are a plumber this is snap to work with.
Great review. Are these made by the same company as Sunsun? They look the same. Trying to decide what to do.
Yes, same filter different brand name!
Have you ever tried charging one of these with Diatomaceous Earth?
Yeah.... I seen something looked fishy... Lol can't wait to see your update video 😂🤣😅... Awesome video Man 🤘 keep up the good work 😁😆
Thanks!!
What did you see that was fishy? You should tell him exactly so at least he can have the in mind and can keep in eye on that specificity you feel me?
I bought this same filter. I liked it, but then it just stopped working. I had it on my 75 gallon tank with a red ear slider.
I replaced it with an FX6
Dang, I hope that does not happen to mine! Sick replacement though! Love the FX6.
@@LongLiveYourTurtle it worked great, while it worked!
@@LongLiveYourTurtle How often do you have to replace water with FX6 ? We are getting ready to move from our small tank up to a 75ish.. and we are learning the ropes.
Who her that's watching this video has the same Sunsun or the marine Color? Have you removed the main head o-ring seal and within a few minutes later realized that suddenly the o-ring has just grown in diameter to the point where it is actually wayyy to big and no longer fits properly in the channel it belongs in? This is a very strange phenomenon and i have absolutely no understanding why or what caused mine to do that... ANYONE who has experienced the same as this, I'd greatly appreciate your response!
I got the fx 6 400 gallons I hope it works for my 75 gallons tank with 2 turtles. 8 inches, red slider and yellow belly turtles. but I wont feed them inside of the tanks they have their containers aside to eat and poop.
I have that filter and I use it on my 90 gallon with one large RES. I love that filter so much, I got a second one for my other 90 gallon.
Nice! I used to have a Fluval for my 75 but I moved two of my sliders into 100 gal indoor turtle tub so the FX6 followed, I have been trying to match its performance since, the cascade and Polar should come close. Thanks for the comment!
@@LongLiveYourTurtle thanks to you. I need to watch your video about how to make a basking area because I found out that the turtle topper reptology is not big enough for my tank I read is up to 55 gallons only. I don't know why the company makes a bigger one.
Hey that’s a sunsun
Pretty much! It is a generic brand under a few names.
I've noticed on the couple different size canister filters that there is people saying the hose sizes are different from 3/4in to 5/8.
I am getting a new canister filter here in a few weeks and used the sunsun and it was amazing until I broke the top and it doesn't seal correctly. Totally my fault but I am setting up a new cage for my dwarf caiman and using 3/4 in bulkheads.
Just need to know what size tubing is on the different sizes so I can prepare correctly for this cause I am no longer using the sunsun and will be using the P.A ...so Anyone know?
I'll be using the 525 I think it is,it's the biggest P.A they got.
Does the nozzle on the outflow removable?
Yes!
Any update on how it’s holding up. I just bought one for my 55gal. Two baby slider turtles 🐢
It is doing well! The glass cover for the UVB ended up breaking so I just removed the whole socket (otherwise it would short) and snipped the wires that lead to the socket so that there was no way for electricity to flow to that feature. Otherwise no leaking seals or issues. One thing I do not love is the amount of noise from the filter, but for the price it cannot be beat!
Check the propeller, these tend to cause noise when they are even a little bit off.
Today is 8/14/2022 how it go now?
Sold it! But it was going strong many months later. Great budget canister filter with a lot of power.
I've seen diff brand names with the same model for cheaper. Do u think it's good still? Pls respond asap. Setting up new 135 gal tank.
Great if you are trying to save a few bucks, otherwise Fluval FX6 all the way!
Wish I had the money for those. Great quality filters 👍
Does your FX6 has any clog issue with sand as substrate? I heard it will damage the power filters. Maybe canister filter is a different story. I just ordered fluval FX4 for my 75gl tank. Thank you.
I haven’t had any issues with sand even with 3 turtles in the tank, the flu also design is quite good and traps sand at the bottom instead of it getting into the impeller. You will not be disappointed with that filter
How’s that fx6 holding up for you Milo?
I cant get my UV light to work
Same. I set it up as per instructions and it’s not on, my glass cover isn’t damaged nor did the light seem to be. Not sure what the issue is. Filter runs fine other than that
Love the vid. Considering getting a similar filter. But just seems like everything has bad reviews. Almost seems like fx6 is the way to go. Question why did you remove the whole top basking doc you made for that smaller one?
If you can afford it, the FX6 is def the way to go in my opinion. And I wanted to change up the tank. The new design lets me light it differently and gives me easier access on one side. Thanks for the comment!
I'm concerned the company did not get back to you. No product is a good value unless the company who's name is on it stands behind the product.
I agree. It is a generic product though so I am probably not working with the original manufacturer so I didn't expect much.
According to Pondguru you are setting it up all wrong.:)
Why do almost every single video I see on these canister filter videos. Everyone places them INTAKE HOSE & OUT TAKE HOSE RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER . MAKES NO SENSE. THE FURTHER YOU SEPARATE THEM HOSE THE BETTER RESULTS YOU WILL HAVE AND THE PERFORMANCE AND THE CIRCULATION WILL BE 100%PERCENT EFFECTIVE. GET LONGER HOSE IF YOU HAVE TO. ALWAYS PUT THE INTAKE ON 1 SIDE AND THE OUT ON THE OTHER SIDE. With them hoses placed in that way and your outtake water hitting the side or front of tank you will create a circular current motion in your tank. With the water hitting the side and the intake in the back corner your filter will start pushing and pulling the water in a that motion so that your filter won't have to work so hard nor will their be any dead spots in the tank.
I hear you. I definitely agree that a filter should have intake on one end and output on the other for optimal flow. However, since this is a turtle tank and the basking dock I made covers half of the tank I cannot set the filter up that way. Luckily turtles stir up the water quite well and circulate it so the filter is still amazingly effective and as long as there is enough filtration my tank cleanup requirements barely change!
