- Aquarium Canister Filter, 1 month UNTOUCHED
Hey everyone, in todays video i am going to open up a sunsun 304b canister filter from my 125 gallon african cichlid tank. The purpose of this video is not a HOW TO, but rather an eye opener for new comers in the hobby, that there is no blanket answer for when you should be performing your filter maintenance and water changes. Know the basics and rely on your water test kits, stay safe and leave a like, thank you for watching.

Dont have the time to optimize your videos or just need help getting your channel going ? Tube Buddy is an awesome free tool that i discovered and has definetly helped me with titles, tagging, etc and really saves time. I use the pro version which is dirt cheap, but i did start out with the free version which is still awesome to give you a little bit of help: www.tubebuddy.... (affiliate)
The water flows from the bottom to the top in this filter. So you should put the pads and other mechanical filtration on the bottom trays and put biological filtration on the top.
Hi Anthony, nice job with the canister service and video. I haven’t used that brand of filter before, but many, such as Ben Ochart, swear by them. I usually do my water changes when my tests indicate I should and canister maintenance when the flow rate starts to drop. It’s just what has been working for me. Thanks very much for sharing
Denny's Aquatics Hey thank you for dropping by! Sunsuns are great, I will never by a name brand at full price unless it’s a really good deal. That’s a nice little system you got down, flow rates definitely are a good indicator that the inside of the filters need love
i have two of these on a turtle tank and can get away with close to a year, stable water levels, no clarity change, and no issues
You can put ceramic rings on the bottom below the trays if you want to make the water flow disrupted before it hits the filter media in trays. Also good way to trap the larger junk before it hits filter media. You're right on placing media. I prefer to do mechanical filter media first, course foam/sponge medium foam/sponge fine foam/sponge then poly fill and then Biological media of choice being lava rock or ceramic rings. Since I have a monsterous 304 B Sunsun canister filter I can use the last tray for whatever i need. Chemical or additional bio or mechanical filter media.
Pinky Filters Pads are the best! I have a layer of Pinky with some Poly-fil too in my canister. Looked good for a month too. Liked the vid as always interested in what other folks use in their canisters. Thanks for sharing.
I use a 704b as my 2nd canister on a 100 gallon . Clean out at 2 - 3 months . Not to nasty but worth cleaning on my system after that time frame . Very happy with the 704b
i just got a 210 gal , in addition to my fx6 i ordered the bigger sunsun 3000 with the 700gph flow
WOW I didn't realize how BIG that sunsun filter is. I like that you go heavy on the filter floss for polishing. Good stuff as usual!!!!
NYGOLD yeah they definitely are pretty big! Love me some filter floss haha thank you for stopping in, much love ✊🏻
I use sun sun 304b's on my tanks also love them no issue's for 2 years of running them I clean mine about once every two months or so.
I’ve gone two or three months with multiple filters sharing the load. Going longer shouldn’t be a problem.
I've gone longer than 6 months without cleaning out my canister filter, and what's more, I've always kept all the pads it came with. I just wring and rinse them out in dechlorinated water. I've kept the same floss pads for years and years 😂.
I've never had any issues with my water quality. As long as you remove the built up fish waste and other decomposing organic waste, the bacteria will take care of the rest.
I admit, however, that going as long as I do without replacing filter media can possibly put a strain on the impeller as it needs to work harder to push water through denser material.
That filter looks really nice. Your tank is looking nice. Great video 👍
Aquarium Show hey thank you, I appreciate you stopping in🤙🏻
I also like sunsun. They are as you said very affordable, and do a great job. One of the issues I had when mine is the motor oring caused some major leaking. Good thing it was in my fish room which is concrete floors. Lol.
inventoryking Ohh wow I’m going to check my older ones now and make sure the O rings are looking good, walking in to water everywhere is my worst nightmare! Thank you for stopping by, I greatly appreciate it👍🏻
Unconventional Aquatics - oh yeah, water everywhere is not a situation to be in.
Not so bad for a month. The tank looks good.
That filter was clean
I have been setting up mattenfilters in all my tanks. I don't touch them for a year, when I do partials every week or so I just hit it here and there with the suction to loosen debris and suck it up.
Elys D'Clar I’ve actually been thinking about making mattenfilters for my fish room. They seem to be super efficient
You won't regret it. I have them in the 65g, 20L (shrimp and fry tank) and setting up the 40g again with one.
Great edit man! I too use a sun-sun 304b. Awesome filter for the price
Hey thanks bro, i greatlt appreciate you stopping in👍
....How dare you not use Homer's bucket!!! 🤣
Hi Anthony... I have different canisters on my tanks. I do mine every 3 months. I've never used SunSun so this was great for me to see. Have a great day!!😁🌿💗💦
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl Hey Deb, always nice to see you stop by❤️🤙🏻💦
Cool and understandable, helpful as well, hey boss I'm a beginner hobbyist and thanks for the tip as well "lava rock".
Hey thank you for stopping by, i greatly appreciate it and glad you enjoyed the video. I love lava rock! Its all i use as bio media
All vids are fun to watch
Thanks my man🤙🏻
enjoyed the video sir. I really like sun suns, just without the sterilizer
Adam C Hey Adam thanks for stopping by! Yeah I don’t touch that switch on the UV sterilizer 😂
I use the same Sun Sun 304B a lot. They seem to be a good work-horse. I also find them to be a bit big and heavy when full of water. Your water looked potable compared to mine. LOL
Yeah they are very heavy!! Loaded down with lava rock and water, i hate moving them lol
considering getting one someday
Not too bad after one month!
Heather Nielsen - Varuna Aquatics Hey thanks for stopping by! Yeah surprisingly it wasn’t to bad at all
Just picked up a 704b sunsun for a 65 gall
Nice! 704’s are massive
Good for 40 gal breeder?
how long and often do you use the UV light ?
I honestly hardly ever use it, but when I do I only run it for about an hour . I have this terrible fear of forgetting it’s on and burning up the filter 😂
@@UnconventionalAquatics the only help that I get is from Chewy and SunSun witch both say run it 24/7 but they could be just trying to make money ? I've seen videos of peoples filters melted but that could be user error like they didn't get all the water out and or they just want a new filter ? I have no idea what to do ?
@@UnconventionalAquatics I actually have the 704b and I've been running it for a about a year now. You can use the uv light for how you see fit. I mostly leave it on for about 3-4 days continuously every week. The longest I left it on for was a week by forgetting to turn it off but still no burning issues whatsoever. I've heard of people burning or melting the trays in the older model which is the 3 series. The 704b is the newer model and they supposedly fixed all errors and defects. I can't speak for everyone but I have not had any issues with burning the whole year I've ran it. Hope this helps
Looking good but got a tan that filter wasn’t bad at all I just cleaned my fx6 after 3 months and it wasn’t bad I also have a ton a filtration on my 125 it’s really up to the person how offen you clean them great video as always lets push you up to 1000 subs
Ry Mac cichlids Hey Ry hope all is well, thank you for stopping by and yeah I can’t believe almost to 1k, crazy feeling
will 304b too big for 65 gallon..?? i m setting up 65 gallon, n confused between 303b n 304b.. do reply..
Nice vid. So I've had a SunSun 304b and just bought a Pingkay 304b canister filter. They both have the same specs but when I plugged in the Pingkay I was surprised by the difference in flow rate. The Pingkay appeared to be nearly 3X stronger flow rate from the spray bar. Inlet and outlet tubes also have a superior feel to them. The one thing I don't like about them is that the trays aren't snug against the walls with slight gaps and allowing particles to bypass the filter media.I was thinking of gluing a thin gasket around the tray walls to close the gaps. I'd like to know what you would you do though.
Rath Man Hey bro thanks for stopping by! That’s really interesting that the Pingkay had that much of a stronger flow. Makes me wonder if maybe your sunsun had a little bit of a faulty motor. That’s a really good idea with the gaskets! I would definitely try that
Love your videos and this was a really good one too. There are no golden rules but I’d love to see a beginners guide video that stresses the first step knowledge of cycling a tank and do’ and dont’. I may even do one after a recent tragedy 😢 and listening to dickheads in aquarium shops who push sales upon beginners.
My fishtank buddy here in Australia bought a SunSun for a laugh as a backup to his other cannisters. Had it for two years with no problems. He pimped it with marine pure, poly floss and a bag of Purigen.
My third tank I’m going sump baby lol.
I’m gonna get a sunsun now lol. You got me thinking. Will chuck it on my emergency tank.
Filter gloss should be on top of the foam you only need one filter floss pad
I would recommend replacing the lava rock with something better lava rock kinda works but water doesnt flow through it and it you look close all the places where its smooth as glass those spots are doing nothing
Do you ever have trouble with the sunsun sucking in air? I bought a new sunsun 3000 about a month ago and it gets a blast of air thru it about every hour. I have checked the o rings and hoses many times. I tried a thin layer of Vaseline on the o rings. nothing helps. Any ideas what to do? Has this ever happened to yours?
Hey thanks for watching! I actually have had issues before with them sucking air before, mainly from that little floating surface skimmer that branches off of the intake. For that issue I completely took that skimmer off and plugged up the little hole with the cap that covers it when it comes packaged.
The other air issue I have had, is the filter not purging air out of the canister. So it would constantly gurgle and push these rushes of air out. So for that I let the filter run, grab the top of it and rock it back and forth to help get the trapped air to push out. Sounds rediculous but I still have to do it to this day occasionally with all my sun sun canisters
@@UnconventionalAquatics OK Ill try these ideas. Thanks for all the great videos.
Dean W thank you for the kind words brother!
How quiet is this filter?
Question...have you tried the new SunSun 3000? I'm getting a 150g cichlid tank and I'm trying to determine how many canisters I need for this aquarium size. Any thoughts?
Hey thank you for watching, I have not tried that model. I’m a huge fan of the 304b’s what are you planning on stocking your 150g with?
Unconventional Aquatics definitely cichlids. Peacocks and Haps. Just not sure if the quantity yet. Any suggestions?
NittanyFins I would do two 304b’s they can hold a ton of media. I run two I my 6 foot 125, with no chemical filtration and the water is literally invisible, looks like the fish are floating
Unconventional Aquatics thanks so much. I was trying to find out if two 304b would be enough. I am running a 302 on my son’s 40g freshwater and it’s a great filter for that.
NittanyFins No problem, yeah 302’s are awesome too, the 304b is a great budget friendly way to go. I have a mix of 30 peacocks and haps in the 125 and never had an issue due to filtration. The UV light is nice too if you ever need to run it, I have never even turned my UV’s on lol
Hey. I got a bucket like that but it's Home Depot. Do u feed your fish lightly to keep your filtration cleaner?
Viola Hops a lot Hey thanks for dropping in! Yes I do feed them lightly, i try to break 1 teaspoon full into two separate feedings per day. It’s done wonders for filter maintenance and I don’t need any chemical filtration to make the water clear 👍🏻
Yeah, Brother. Mine also becomes nasty in both my American and African Cichlid tanks.
Protim Aquatics thanks for stopping in bro🤜🏻🤛🏻
Unconventional Aquatics Anytime Brother.👍😃
go and watch pondguru on setting up filters the correct way.
That sunsun looked good. I gotta change my fluval on sunday.
Hello
I live in Germany and I am seriously considering buying a SunSun model HW-704B to install it in my 240-Liter Amazonian planted aquarium (63.40 US gallons)
So far I have an Eheim Professionel 4+ 600 of 1250 liters per hour (330'22 US gallons per hour)
The truth is that Eheim has greatly reduced its quality in its latest versions, especially after the Professionel 2 series, I'm sick of that Eheim filter with small baskets of poor quality plastic, with little capacity for material, it is also an filter excessively noisy (It seems that I have a tractor in the living room of my house, even though the filter is inside the aquarium cabinet)
I would really appreciate it if you would give me your opinion based on your experience with SunSun filters, I really read opinions that scare me, there is no middle ground, it happens, from very good opinions, to extremely bad opinions.
I would also like you to give me your opinion on the usefulness of UV lamp, I have never used one, I do not know how long it is appropriate to remain lit, but I have been told that it is a great solution for seaweed and germs, is it really a good option to buy this filter equipped with a UV lamp?
Can you help me please?
Thanks in advance.
You should've kept it for a longer time tho.
How many filters are you running on that 120?
Sushi Prince Hey thanks for stopping by, I run 2 canisters, sponge on a power head and an hob with a short intake for surface skimming
UP until today, I've never owned anything else than the Fluval 307 but that's not the reason I'm commenting on your video... Like Every other canister filter, and I'm pretty sure I speak for this one you're demonstrating here, ALL have a final rubber o-ring that when the top of the filter is closed and fastened down, prevents the filter from leaking.
I'm not sure if you or anyone else who's reading my comment knows or is aware of this but if you treat that big o-ring with a lubricant (... because yes, rubber too dries up and cracks > leak!)
We really don't want our o-rings drying up on us, do we?
BUT!! Before you go dodging for the ol' vascilne, try using a food grade grease.
I've read that even though vascilne isn't toxic, it can create a bit of gew floating in the water column of the aquarium.
I've used food grade lubricant grease for years and it's never failed me. Your o-rings - beit tiny or large will serve you well if treated properly.
Man I have about 50 growing haps and peacocks in 125g and I power feed bro my 304b's look very dirty when I open em
HAHA i bet they get nasty quick. Back when i had a massive mixed african cichlid tank, my canisters were disgusting after a week lol
Unconventional Aquatics .I'm running 4 of them along with 2 sponge filters
For all of the beginners out there.
You should ONLY clean your canister filters if the flow has been reduced considerably.
And then ONLY clean off the worst of the brown gunk.
The brown gunk is your beneficial bacteria. BB ain't pretty.
Ha ha! My girlfriend is the same way.
That filter wasn't bad at all actually....agree that you can go longer than a month if that's all the dirty it gets.
I wasn't touched for 14 months 😁
🤣
That's so 😔 sad 🤣🤣🤣🤣
1 month? Mine has gone a year and still wasn't too bad.
Thanks pretty clean lol you could of went longer lol
Angelo's Fish Tanks haha right! Dude I remember my mbuna tank after a week the filters where terrible lol
I dont clean my filters more than 3 times a year. well stocked large cichlid tank
Do you syphon out the detritus manually from the tank. My filter needs cleaning once a month only because there is a huge detritus buildup in the mechanical level and I am worried that it will become a nitrogen factory.
@@AmitSingh350 also worry about the added strain on your filter impeller that buildup can and will cause.
I just did one that was 5 months. Yikes, way to long. Love the sunsun
Corey Hecker Hey Corey I greatly appreciate you stopping by and subscribing ! Much love✊🏻 I love your channel 👍🏻
Now try one month in a tank filled with tannin
My filters runs for a year or years begore i clean it.
50% water change every week??? You don't even need a filter and your tank was probably going to be clear...
101
I'll tell you what bud with a cichlid tank that water should have been filthy you must be doing something right.african cichlid are very dirty fish so your filter was in bloody good nic.
Hey John I appreciate the kind words brotha🤙🏻 thanks for watching!
Your filter is set up wrong
You shouldn't clean your filter before 5 months.
Your wasting money cleaning it all the time I mean it was CLEAN
I hoped you mopped up the dookie water.
