  • If you're looking to protect your plants from aphids, you have all sort of allies in the garden: ladybugs, hoverflies, wasps, etc. Sometimes, the damage to your plants is so severe, that you can't wait for beneficial insects to do the job. In this video, I'll survey a few of the less toxic methods of killing aphids.
    For a more complete discussion of aphids and their natural enemies, here's my vid on the topic: • Control Aphids without...

    Go with 5 grams of baking soda to one liter of water and spray on infested areas of roses or other plants. Very common and effective remedy (we use in europe) that is commonly used in north america as well.

    Thanks for the video. Great information. Last year, I decided to leave the masses of aphids on my garden roses and see if beneficial insects really would turn up and make a difference. At one point I figured that the ‘experiment’ had failed. However, Just a couple of days or so later, a flock of house sparrows turned up with their young. With no exaggeration, they removed virtually every visible aphid within less than two days from approximately 15 rose plants - I’ve never seen anything like it before. The birds then left and the aphid problem didn’t return (presumably the beneficial insects took care of the rest)
    It was really quite amazing to see nature find its own balance. Hope it works out the same way this year. Thanks again for your great content!

      Good to hear - it's a tough thing to see your plants struggling with a pest, and then to just wait for predators to sort it out. I've seen aphid infestations get out hand in the veggie garden from time to time, but haven't lifted a finger in my rose garden for years.

      Same I waited it out this year too and I was so happy to see lady beetles laying eggs all over the celery plant under side of the leaves. Soon as they hatched wow they just gobbled so many up. Now I can’t see any aphids on the plant atm. It is coming into winter though so that might be why too but them lady bugs were so good and I’m hoping to god they Over winter here at my place in the yard somewhere (I have heaps of warm places that’s dry they can over winter) and in spring they come out and keep the pests at bay again.

    I always had a really huge aphid problem until the ladybugs would finally make their way to my garden. Then I watched a video where the guy said it is caused by high nitrogen in the soil, especially from pets "fertilizing" in that area. So I've been really careful about fertilizing correctly this year and also removed all of last year's foliage early in the season. This has made a huge difference. I'm so scared to even type this because I don't want to jinx myself, but NO aphids this year!

      Ants farm aphids. Typically if you have a huge aphid infestation, ants are farming them. I found borax disolved in warm water then use white sugar to make a paste, works magic on ant bait. They bring the sugar soaked with borax back to the hive and die. Aphids do grow in numbers quickly, but with ants they protect aphids from predators, so be sure to tackle the ant problem if present as well. Bug sprays do NOT work on ants. just the service level ones. I tried the d. earth, soaps, neem you name it, but the borax/sugar/water is the hands down winner for that issue.

      If the "holes" are nearly perfect pencil-sized circles, it's likely leaf cutter bees, which are very beneficial pest predators. Their presence indicates you have a pest problem, and if that problem is aphids, they indicate over fertilization, particularly nitrogen!
      If aphids are not the problem, then just thank those leaf cutter bees, and make peace with their assistance in your garden.

      Look on the bottom side of your leaves and see if there's any little green worms, they kind of look like caterpillars. It's kinda gross but it seems to be working 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @staceydesorgo
      @staceydesorgo 3 года назад

      It's good to read that I'm not the only one who just squishes insect pests. I was worried there was some hidden problem with doing it that a really good hand scrubbing couldn't solve. My aphids just get smooshed daily (along with a verbal diatribe that makes my roses blush), and then I just thoroughly wash both hands, including under the fingernails. It has worked for smaller infestations so far this year. They dwindle in number until there are none left or the leaves have all matured. I was also hoping that leaving their smushed remains behind served as some sort of warning to all the other aphids to steer clear. Hopefully even dumb aphids get that message!

      Like the aphid infestation is caused by lack of nutrients? No, in fact, lush growth due to high nitrogen levels can support fast aphid population booms. Aphids are around regardless - and are searching for plants to infest. There may be something to the idea that yellowish unhealthy looking plants may become easy targets for pests (thus the yellow sticky cards) but they'll infest perfectly healthy plants as well.

      Wisteria is pretty tough to keep in bounds, but thankfully, they recover well from an occasional heavy pruning. You can prune them into old wood after blooming, and then tidy up again in late winter, leaving three buds per stem on the 1 year-old growth (so that you can have flowering shoots)

    Many years ago, David Tarrant recommended a form of biological warfare - collecting aphid infested branches, whirling them in a blender, with a drop of soap, and then spraying the solution on the plant - the microbes from the guts of the aphids would kill all the interlopers.
    I was far too busy, as a working mother,
    So I squished aphids with my fingers, here and there on the worst infected buds and branches.
    It takes a bit of patience, whether by gnats, wasps or microbes, but after a week, the aphids are gone!

    Jason! Love the pest control videos.
    Unfortunately, I'm still fighting spider mites indoors. I threw out my thyme, oregano, parsley and basil. They killed a beautiful Chinese lantern plant and a moon flower. I deep cleaned the room, waited 2 weeks and started more herbs. They were back in a week. I've used neem oil and a dish soap mix with no effect. Thorough spray. Under side of leaves. Repeating the process.
    The population easily bounced back even as I was applying neem oil every 3 days? It seemed worthless aside from the price of it.
    Is horticultural oil any better?
    Any advice would be much appreciated.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  3 года назад +3

      Spider mites can be very difficult to wipe out. I don't think the horticultural oil will be an improvement over the neem. It may be worth trying insecticidal soap (really rubbed into the nooks and crannies of the leaves) or pyrethrin-based formulas.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  3 года назад +2

      Hi Paul. It could be spider mites - very fine webbing (especially on the lower surface of leaves), leaves discolor to bronze and if you look close you can see loads of little mites and debris under the webbing. They usually come on strong when the weather warms up. Here's a closer look at the pest: ruclips.net/video/mI5zowOac6I/видео.html When I see a severe infestation, I strip the worst of the leaves. Beneficial mites are an option - some sprays can be effective, but the webbing makes it tricky to get good coverage onto the pests themselves.

      So long as the temperatures are not too high, I'd feel comfortable applying neem to early (closed) flower buds. It can be a little hard on foliage, and I can only imagine that it could damage the soft tissue of opening petals as well. Maybe someone else out there has tried it and can give an answer from experience.

      Two options I can think of: 1) spray them early in the day, then give the foliage a quick shake for any excess water. That way they will quickly dry off and reduce the risk of mildew, or 2) skip straight to insecticidal soap. Some people like diatomaceous earth for this, but that's a matter of preference: I just don't like applying the powder.

I've purchased 3 bottles of neem oil & just when i think i"m out of the woods I'M NOT!!!!! And yes i've sprayed over/under everytime along with the plant dripping wet. I purchased 1 bottle from a nursery center & 2 from a box store (same product as the nursery sold) There is a chemical (if u wish 2 call it) by the name of Azadiractin that i heard is not in the bottles that i purchased & is an essential ingredient in destroying these PESTS. I like 2 stay as organic as possible in treating any infestations that come along. I'm hoping that you might be able to shed some lite not only on this chemical (( such as it could destroy the beneficial bugs/insects) & that's why it's been eliminated & what other way i could go?? I've also heard that there is a neem oil extract . Could u clairfy that also?? Your input would be greatly appreciated. I live in a zone 6 just in case that is an important factor to be said. Looking forward to ur reply & thank u in advance for ur time !

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  3 года назад +1

      Hi Bobbie. The chemical you mentioned Azadiractin is a component of neem. You've been using neem-based products with unsatisfactory results, so I might suggest you alternate over to insecticidal soap (also a non-toxic product). The neem is supposed to disrupt insect development, but the soap will act fairly fast to "knock down" the population of adults.

    Jason! Help! My David Austen Rose Boscobel that I planted last year was just starting to get new sprouts of leaves. I had trimmed it back to the ground in the fall. And things were looking good for this year. Then we had a harsh day of winds and the leaves died and aren’t coming back. Will he survive? Is he doomed? What can I do?

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  3 года назад +2

      If the rose has been in place for a year, it's had some time to develop some roots and store some energy in its tissues. A set-back on the new shoots can be scary, but if the stems remain alive, they'll develop new shoots over time from dormant buds. This can take weeks, so patience is in order. Watch the condition of the stems. If they turn black, grey or dark brown, that's a bad sign. If they're still green (or if you scrape the outer bark, and it's green just beneath) there's still hope.
