I haven't seen them on the plant yet, but I've seen them twice now in the soil while watering at the base of the plant. The first time I saw them I used neem oil on the plant and I also used some diluted solution in the soil after watering in the morning, but within two weeks I seem them all over again! Wi have already had some aphids this year in my zone 8. I hate those lil devils. They will ruin my roses in a heartbeat. Tfs your tips. I love the organic options you had. 💕💕💕
For potted individual plants, unburden a heavy infestation by first taking it out in the middle of you lawn or driveway away from other plants, carefully wrap a large black garbage bag at the base of the plant to cover the soil so it doesnt wash the bugs into the soil tip the pot on its side and give the plant a good shower with a garden hose sprayer on the jet setting. After the majority of the aphids are off tip it upright uncover the plastic and spray with insecticidal soap, neem or whatever you choose to use.

I've heard good things about parasitic wasps for greenhouses in cold climates. They typically go dormant when the infestation is under control, or feed on populations living in nasturtium or on other plants, then if the aphids come back in the greenhouse, the parasitic wasp population comes back in shortly after, so if you want a more permanent solution than ladybugs, they can work really well. I'm not sure if they work well outside where its cold, but for medium scale commercial tomato greenhouses they work really well.
Thank you for this video. I saw little black bugs on my yellow dahlias and sedum. Sprayed with Bonide Eight and covered them with a plastic tent for the day and night so no other insects or birds could come in contact with it...the tent also prevented any from flying away. Looked this am and not a one alive! I wil, l monitor daily like you recommended..thank you so much, Laura! On another topic, I LOVE my lungwort...thank you for recommending!
You are putting up so many amazing videos. I am loving it. Must be so difficult to shoot, edit and then upload so many. But you guys are just amazing at how you both do it. Can’t wait to see the next one 😝
Perfect timing! I just realized that aphids (along with Japanese beetles) were the problems on my roses and crepe myrtles last year. I was just about to search for ways to prevent when I looked down at my subscriptions and here you were talking about it. 🙌🏻
I'm so glad I watched this. I found a small cluster on my hibiscus and freaked out. It's my first real plant so I'm glad to have options. From water to "kill it" I am way more confident now. 😆
Soapy water works every time…. And if it doesnt work the first time fully I add peppermint extract ad well. Never takes more than 3 treatments……. No chemicals needed…. No needing to buy expensive products as well……
I followed your how to plant strawberries video and the washtub was such a good idea! My plants are super happy...or they were. Hopefully this works to eliminate my aphid problem. There is almost no visible plant damage yet so i got my fingers crossed.
This video was so helpful!! Thank you for sharing. My parade roses have been besieged by these aphids (I previously didn't know what they were called so I just called them life-suckers, oof), and I took the time to remove them myself, and then spray my plants with the hose. Then after a few weeks, they returned!! And I did the same process again. I'm planning to buy an insecticide, (I was dubious if I should, but my friend convinced me), but I thought I would just go around the store and buy the first one that said it would kill these life-suckers. Thank goodness I watched this video first! I'm going to look for the 'for organic gardening' ones, or maybe even buy the same insecticides if my stores has them! Thank you once again! I feared that these aphids were going to ruin gardening for me. My roses' leaves continued to yellow, and these bugs kept returning. They lost quite a few leaves..in the process. And it was hard seeing the new, light green leaves just crinkled and die. I was really hoping for the roses to grow, and to finally see some rose blooms. I was almost going to give up on roses, because I didn't have the time to remove the aphids and I didn't want to see my roses die. Last year I had already uprooted my marigold because bugs had besieged them, to the point of it not being salvageable, and oh boy, taking it up had hurt me a lot. I actually kept the roses in my house before I let them outside again, so I wouldn't have to deal with the life-suckers returning, but looked sad in there, and I think more leaves were dying (oh no, I messed up, they needed light!!) My living room's not really a lighted area, since my family likes to keep the curtains closed. It's a bit hard, to garden when school's keeping you busy, there's a baby to take care of, and there's schoolwork and other factors in life.. But..once I get some insecticide, everything should be fine. And...having roses and keeping plants brings me joy. I don't want to lose that.
Great video laura! Thank You so much for sharing!! We get aphids like crazy here in Florida and I've been using Neem Oil for 6 yrs now. It's the only thing that seems to keep the fungal diseases and pests away from my garden and at bay. Awesome information as always!!
Stacey Here we grow again I bought some from Gary Pilarchik on RUclips, he’s a RUclips gardener and he sells concentrated Neem oil. A lot of the stuff in the store is just the extract, but he has the best stuff! I used it on my pumpkins last year and it wiped them out! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for all your great videos. Diatomaceous earth can be nasty stuff to humans as well if you inhale any airborne particles. It is used as a variant in pool filtration systems. Perhaps wear a mask when using it.
I have always used water, Dawn dish soap and listerine mouthwash in a spray bottle. Works great for me. Laura, do you have any feedback on this method?
From Pa. Near Philly never dealt with those but we have something new called lantern flys! So glad you showed this video just in case I would see them!
Of course they believe that these pests came from a crate of stone's shipped in the states here from China. And nothing really gets rid of them unless you scrape them and the eggs into a Ziploc bag full of hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol and zip shut to get rid of them.Any other sprays or dish soap technique doesn't really work on these spotted lantern flies/bugs.Hope this helps
Also you can use homemade liquid too which is contain any type of cooking oil mix with water, dish wash liquid and salt mix well and spray your roses atleast once a week very helpful and cheap method to deal with aphids and spiders. :)
Huge problem every grow season here in Tifton, GA, thank you so much for this video on how to control these pesky little creatures, the ants here tend to farm them and it's a yearly battle with them especially during the hottest part of the summer.
Watch the ants go back to their best. Once you know where they're coming from, you can kill them at their source. Make a Borax/sugar slurry in a bottle. The ants will take it into the nest and hopefully will kill the queen. No queen, no ants😊. Just don't make it to watery or they won't make it very far.
Thanks for the tips. Oddly, Neem Oil wouldn’t work for the aphids on my container vegetable garden (zone 10b), but Insecticidal soap really did the trick in 1 application. I had been spraying Neem oil (with water and dish soap) weekly for months...
Eric you should go to traps. I’ve had the same problem. I’m in the same zone. Gotta kill the ants. Jars with holes in the top, 1tablespoon borax, 3 tablespoons sugar, make a paste with and water and put it under your trees or in your garden. Use some gloves if your afraid to pick off the big ones and put them in a pail of soapy water until you get a grip on them.
Have you thought about planting with natives? Such as deer grass provides a place for the ladybugs to lay their eggs. Maybe a native garden in one of your empty spots. Just a thought, as I have tons of lady bugs. I’m working on a pollinator garden in my veggie garden. Thanks for your videos.
Unfortunately your links for these products don’t work for us in canada. I would totally love to get some . Will keep looking. Love your show. Keep up the good work.
I managed an aphid outbreak on my new roses by using a spray bottle filled with water and adding a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid and peppermint oil, it worked fast and well, and was cheap to make.
one teaspoon of Neem Oil, and one teaspoon of natural castile soap in one gallon of water in a spray bottle. I got rid of them in 2-3 days. I sprayed my plants (lemon tree, lettuce plants) 2 times for 2 days and killed them off.
Diatomaceous Earth (food grade)... that stuff is amazing! We had sugar ants in our house last summer and could not get rid of them, until we used this stuff. They were all dead in less than 24 hours. Scary that this stuff is so deadly for bugs and yet some folks eat this stuff in capsules.
Thank you so much for the information Ms Laura! because of this video I just check my roses and of course they all have Aphids 😒 Will definitely buy these 👏🏻
I actually like these suckers sometimes, because at my job (floral shop) we also sell potted plants of all sorts, but sometimes there´s aphids on them, mostly the roses, and we cant keep them, so i get them for free!! I bring them home and qurantine them untill im sure theyre fine. Last time i got 6 light pink beautiful roses, not sure which kind though.
So far I haven't had a big problem with aphids but Japanese Beetles are my nemesis. Thanks for the reminder to always be checking my plants for bugs or other problems.
Teresa Fredenburg Japanese beetle traps (bags) work great! We trapped thousands last summer with two bags...about $8. Gross, but well worth it. Those things are nasty!
Also careful going to a big box store and asking an associate because most times they are not very knowledgeable usually just there for a paycheck 🙄 But if you go to a nursery or a locally owned garden center they will be extremely helpful because they actually know what they're talking about!
Not all nurseries are the same. We have one nursery in our town. They're terrible. I went there and they were over priced and knew nothing about their plants. They basically said, what's the label say? They were selling everything that our local Lowe's has but (Lowe's) has cheaper prices. I don't think all nurseries are bad, at least I hope not. Our town isn't the best for scruples. My daughter caught a guy who sold at the local farmer's market buying his produce (to sell) at Walmart. When she made a comment about it, he put his finger to his mouth and said, "Shhh."
Wish i'd have watched this about a week ago. I've just binned 3 rose plants :( And two of the three smelled absolutely gorgeous, A yellow very fragrant one and a fragrant darkish red one.
Last year as I took down my peas I was shocked to find a huge infestation of aphids! Thousands of them! I had not noticed them prior to that! Luckily they did not spread to the rest of the garden!
Thank you for the video! I love your videos also because you use organic and natural products as much as possible. I'm still curious about the weed killer your said you'd make a video on, I have weeds coming through my mulch (big area). Thanks!
We had loads of powdery mildew on our rose. It was in a basement garden climbing on our roof so tough conditions, but watering it a lot more and regularly really helped!
Aly B. Whole milk undiluted. www.green-talk.com/powdery-mildew-spray-with-milk/ There was also a study that said it also controls soft bodied insects like aphids and thrips and mites. I can’t find the original study now but here is a small article on it. The original paper showed that milk controls soft bodied sucking insects by 85%. Whole milk 1 part to water 10 parts. It’s helped black spot on my roses too. Supposedly it changes the PH and makes it inhospitable for molds and fungus. www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Effect-of-cow-milk-on-sucking-pests-and-insect-on-Gupta-Kaur/cdde45e099189ff5162b1af9528c31f9ca73d9aa#paper-header
I like to statt with least harsh method first. My young apple tree has aphids. I spray the leafs with mixture of water and sort of pine sole-soap (5% of the water volume) or 1/2 and 1/2 water and non fat milk. Do it in the evenings for a while and the bugs die (soft bodies break down)
I was once told if you have aphids, you have a sick plant. I am thinking they might be right. I had black aphids on my elderberry plant. They were only on one plant. That one plant needed to be thinned. Once I thinned the plant, the problem went away. A good plant to own for ladybugs is Rosa Rugosa roses. They have beautiful smelling roses, and large rosehips. The ladybugs are a bonus. Watch out for those thorns though!
We have a lot of ladybugs! They even come into our house and are kind of annoying but I keep telling myself that it's good because they eat aphids......and in the last two years were the ladybugs population has been so high I haven't seen any aphids!🐞🌸😁
Hey guys catching up to your videos! Been really thinking on what to use out in the garden. Dealt with a lot of nasty bugs last year. Want it to be safe for the good guys in the garden so after seeing other videos you have shown these products we have also done research on other stuff we will be treating our garden with these products you use. They work for you so well and this summer is going to get crazy with the move and I just want to enjoy and not be out worried on bugs lol. Have a great day guys! 🤗😘💚💚💚💚💚💚
Oh boy look at them going to town. Love all your videos we use most of what your showing. We use LadyBugs 🐞 You need a lady bug house and Ladybugs there so much nicer to look at. They just love to munch on those little nasty things. We only use food graded Diatomaceous earth, this way we can use it in the hen house and in the stalls for Oder control and it safe for them to eat
A thumbs up from me - Thanks!! I just noticed those pests on one of my newer rose bushes, so will try spraying with water, and then see if I can buy some live lady bugs - I like those creatures!? Also, THANK you for not recommending dish soap and claiming that it's "organic and natural" - Dish soap has chemicals, and even though it's milder than insecticides it's NOT natural or organic.

@@fellinloveinmaui Northern California, Zone 10a. I've heard mint is more successful repelling rodents.
Thanks for sharing your little aphid problem. Teachable moment👍🏻
Little? Hah, I hope you never have to deal with them!
Just being nice and positive. 🙂
I wil,
l monitor daily like you recommended..thank you so much, Laura!
How do you spray a crepe mrytle? Do aphids attack only the young ones or mature trees aswell?
You are awesome. I saw those things in my roses and did not know what to do. Just the right time. Thank you, thank you.
Wish all the ladybugs that show up inside would show up out, Thanks for the recommendations.
No needing to buy expensive products as well……
Thank you so for this!! I have one of two rose bushes that get infested every year
I followed your how to plant strawberries video and the washtub was such a good idea!
I have food grade so no problem if you get a human friendly type of the product.
I have always used water, Dawn dish soap and listerine mouthwash in a spray bottle. Works great for me. Laura, do you have any feedback on this method?
dfpg10 how long does it take before they are completely gone with this solution?
How much dish soap or listerine do you add it?

To keep lady bugs around you can make a home for them, like for the leaf cutter bees. Lady bugs prefer cardboard though.
From Pa. Near Philly never dealt with those but we have something new called lantern flys! So glad you showed this video just in case I would see them!
Marilyn Baldwin ugggg I’m so not looking forward to lantern flies this year 😩😩😩
Of course they believe that these pests came from a crate of stone's shipped in the states here from China.
Dish soap and water about 2 tablespoons per gallon works beautifully beautifully! Cheap no carcinogens!
Also you can use homemade liquid too which is contain any type of cooking oil mix with water, dish wash liquid and salt mix well and spray your roses atleast once a week very helpful and cheap method to deal with aphids and spiders. :)
Careful with diatomaceous earth, i got some in my eye a few months back. Insanely painful.
Easy for you to say. I’ve been fighting those suckers for years.
For small spot treatment I use rubbing alcohol lightly. Then I rinse the plant and follow up with soapy water
I use dish soap and water with a touch of vinegar.
I use dish soap in water also without vinegar and it also works
I use dish soap and a grenade launcher. That also works.
@@brokenbutterfly3178 😂😂😂😂😂
I used a flamethrower it also works but the plant does need a small recovery
Does this take care of ants as well?
I managed an aphid outbreak on my new roses by using a spray bottle filled with water and adding a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid and peppermint oil, it worked fast and well, and was cheap to make.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Peace and Love to you and your family.
one teaspoon of Neem Oil, and one teaspoon of natural castile soap in one gallon of water in a spray bottle. I got rid of them in 2-3 days. I sprayed my plants (lemon tree, lettuce plants) 2 times for 2 days and killed them off.
Thank you so much for this video. I’m going through this right now with 25 Knockout Rose bushes. 😢 I love you!
It tastes like a basement
Thanks for the info. In the south we have aphids. Will try planting garlic in rose bed.
Yes!!! Thank you for this! I almost lost my peach tree to stupid aphids. I tried a few things, but they were all futile. I hope these will work. 🤞🏼
I found them last night on my roses I didn't know what they was so I spray with garlic and dishsoap I hope my other plants didn't get affected
Japanese Beetles are my nemesis also! Wish I could figure out something that will keep them off my flowers.
Teresa Fredenburg Japanese beetle traps (bags) work great! We trapped thousands last summer with two bags...about $8. Gross, but well worth it. Those things are nasty!
@@camilla6110 Awesome! Thanks so much Camilla.
Thanks ive had this problem on my rose trees since last year ive tried just using soap but they back this year so i will be getting those products,
Came here looking for your host plant recommendation!! THANK YOU!! ❤️😀😜
Also careful going to a big box store and asking an associate because most times they are not very knowledgeable usually just there for a paycheck 🙄 But if you go to a nursery or a locally owned garden center they will be extremely helpful because they actually know what they're talking about!
This is so true. Home Depot nursery employees have no clue what's what.
glassawata super true. I once worked at Walmart’s nursery and was so lost 😂 ironically I became a gardener after I wuit
Just saw this today, and it was exactly 💯 what I was looking for. Thank you. 🤓
Black aphids love my hibiscus and roses too.
This year I use neem oil and some gentle organic soap dissolved in water. Fingers crossed it will work
Did it work?
@@katrinagarrett9612 yes, it did 🙂
You have to repeat it every day if the plants are heavily affected by aphids. It is anti-fungal also.
great info. I love how I learn so much on your channel. thank you so much.
Wish i'd have watched this about a week ago. I've just binned 3 rose plants :( And two of the three smelled absolutely gorgeous, A yellow very fragrant one and a fragrant darkish red one.
Bedbug spray works wonders on aphids!
Last year as I took down my peas I was shocked to find a huge infestation of aphids! Thousands of them! I had not noticed them prior to that! Luckily they did not spread to the rest of the garden!
This is so helpful as my rose plant is just taken over by aphids and the whole plant looks so horrible 😩
I seen some on my arborvitae trees, and used a hard pressure to wash them off
Thank you for the video! I love your videos also because you use organic and natural products as much as possible. I'm still curious about the weed killer your said you'd make a video on, I have weeds coming through my mulch (big area). Thanks!
Could you please do a video about powdery mildew and organic solutions?
I'd like to see this as well.
We had loads of powdery mildew on our rose. It was in a basement garden climbing on our roof so tough conditions, but watering it a lot more and regularly really helped!
Clair B. I actually saw a video from another channel that was hydrogen peroxide and water. Seemed to work well for me.
Aly B.
Whole milk undiluted.
www.green-talk.com/powdery-mildew-spray-with-milk/
There was also a study that said it also controls soft bodied insects like aphids and thrips and mites.

I fight with powdery mold all the way up to deer. Wish all these diners would leave a better tip for service since I'm preparing all their meals! 😂🌸💰
Same. We now have added groundhogs to our smorgasbord restaurant. Deer, groundhogs, squirrels, and bunnys, oh my!
Thank you ❤
Any solution for dahlias problems. How to rid of tiny bugs
Soapy water , a couple squirts in a spray bottle shake it up and spray away , it suffocates them and kills them almost instantly.
Oh boy look at them going to town. Love all your videos we use most of what your showing. We use LadyBugs 🐞 You need a lady bug house and Ladybugs there so much nicer to look at. They just love to munch on those little nasty things. We only use food graded Diatomaceous earth, this way we can use it in the hen house and in the stalls for Oder control and it safe for them to eat
this has been a great help for me; thank you for taking the time to make and share all these videos! They are so clear and explanatory..
Thnaks very nice information
A thumbs up from me - Thanks!! I just noticed those pests on one of my newer rose bushes, so will try spraying with water, and then see if I can buy some live lady bugs - I like those creatures!? Also, THANK you for not recommending dish soap and claiming that it's "organic and natural" - Dish soap has chemicals, and even though it's milder than insecticides it's NOT natural or organic.
