It wouldn't hurt if it lowered the speed limit back down
I remember the first time I had to use one of the cut throughs to a junk yard. It was terrifying in 1990, and it is terrifying today. I never understood why you'd have those on such a busy highway. They need to be closed or traffic lights installed.
This part of route 58 is a road built for highway speeds, and the worst of both.
When I first came from another state and had directions to do a u-turn on 58 I could not believe it-in a truck (not a semi) it took forever as it is a busy freeway. I always wondered why there were cutouts on 58 but now figure that it didnt have the traffic that it does now
So heartbreaking
Well, driving is inherently dangerous. While we may be seasoned defensive drivers, things happen and happen fast to the best of us. Judging by the damage to the rig and the vehicle it was negligence by both drivers. The vehicle could have stopped in time, or switched to the lanes to his right to avoid this. The rig driver shouldn't of poked his nose out until it was clear. I have driven this road since 1968 and never had a problem...

I agree with this 100%. Every cut through in that spot needs to be closed off. No traffic lights, that will just result in equally serious rear end crashes. Also, that entire route needs guardrails and lights. I know VDOT is planning to redesign that entire route in several years but until then...
Look at how US15 in Maryland is set up. No cut-throughs, you make U-turns and they provide nice long merge lanes. Better than anything I've seen anywhere in Virginia. It's OK to copy off the students that do well, Virginia.
when you're a defensive driver this doesn't happen. no one wants to take responsibility for distracted and unsafe driving habits.. we can do better for one another
the cut thru's on 58 are terrible all of them should be closed
It’s the roads fault 😂😂
