came to see him in asheville pretty much solely for the reason that he’s from there - the love in the room could be felt 10x over anywhere else. he is definitely much respected on his turf
The first time I heard “you don’t know the shape I’m in” I remember having a huge smile when the clarinet actually dropped in and played its lonely duck walk 😂
not me watching the waxahatchee tiny desk when I woke up this morning thinking, man MJ needs to do one of these things...NPR YOU HAVE BLESSED US ON THIS DAY
Saw this guy in an attic in Lakewood 6 months before boat songs came out and have been obsessed since. Please get out there and see this man live if you can, he deserves your coins.
I first heard of MJ Lenderman when I saw Wednesday in Pensacola, FL in 2023 and he was playing bass. I quickly became a fan of his solo music. Now I’m seeing him in OKC in a week or so, in KC in June and in Tulsa in September. It seems obsessive, I know. Somehow he captures growing up in the suburbs and in the south, as well as just unresolvable human longing. I haven’t had an artist speak to me like this since I was 14 maybe. Him and Waxahatchee are some of the best lyricists of our generation. To see him grow like this makes me so emotional.
Something tells me your comment has more to do with your feelings, being hyperbolic and last but not least attracting likes, more so than actual reality. There’s a wealth of talented and young musicians’ music at our fingertips and it doesn’t even take a modicum of work to find them.
@ I’m well aware of the talent out there, I’m also on to guys like Billy Strings and Jesse Welles amongst others. And thanks for the unsolicited Freudian analysis, yikes. Something tells me your comment has more to do with you being offended that I’m calling out the mediocrity of modern music.
@@deputyrock3489 I think that’s what I’m getting at- from the 1960s to the 1990s young bands were really moving the needle, everybody knew them and played the albums. Nowadays, there’s still great music but usually on a smaller scale, which is fine by me because I prefer a little concert hall/bar show to an amphitheater/stadium any time.
Wednesday's Rat Saw God is one of the most brilliant rock albums of recent years and the guitar work from MJ Lendermann and Xandy on there is amazing. I also love what he's done with Waxahatchee on his excellent latest album. This guy is brilliant and he's only 25 years old! I have high hopes for the music he can continue to create. And a huge thanks for what he have already given us.
I'm so happy they started with Wristwatch!! Almost got to see them in Atl but wasn't able to go last minute. Awesome awesome band, can't wait for the next album!!
This dude is so good along with his killer band. Saw him in Opelika AL opening for/playing with Wednesday a few years ago (Wednesday is really good also), and now he's on Tiny Desk, has a headlining tour and is playing Bonnaroo. Well done.
His last two albums, Manning Fireworks and Boat Songs, are both very much worth your time. His live album from 2023 is also incredible. One of the best songwriters going right now and he’s only 25 years old.
This performance is peak Asheville! It's beautiful to see artists like this celebrated on a national scale. MJ deserves all the accolades! Also come visit us here in the mountains of WNC - there is a lot more of this type of artistry to be appreciated ❤.
what a great day to be at the himbo dome
There's milkshakes and smoothies
Yellowbutton is undefeated across platforms
I got a houseboat docked there
What does this line mean?
sitting under the half-mast mcdonalds flag
fastest i've ever clicked for a Tiny Desk
Ur comment made me watch.
@@NoelG314same here, and I still have questions- not sure what I’m supposed to be getting here
@@jacks1598 MJ is somewhere between new grunge and Neil Young. He's been around the scene for a bit but is having his moment now.
same
same dude also love your username
One of the best Albums of 2024, and honestly in general- he's our Hometown Hero, here in Asheville!
828 stand up ⛰️ 🥲
God I miss the Orange Peel

Watching Jordan play baseball?
@ he clearly picked up a guitar dude

Skimmed the description and was convinced "nothing funny has ever happened to me" was a lyric from one of his songs. I'm nicking that one
His entire catalog is gold.
I'm so glad he's finally made it solo to the Tiny Desk!!! He finally got himself that boat!
Gosh this rendition of you don't know is so beautiful. The piano and fiddle make it feel so different ✨❤️
Bought tickets earlier this week to see MJ in Manchester in June. This is a timely preview.
One of the best albums of last year!
Just saw him in Nashville last weekend, first show of the tour and it was a killer performance, great songs and a fantastic band.
Was gonna type something elaborate but it’s just pure gold. Michael Jordan Lenderman means so much to me.
So happy to see MJ coming up. Great artist of this and any time.
I like his lyrical approach. Gives us just enough to paint the picture with the aid of the somewhat dark musical landscape.
This dude sounds a lot like Jason Molina from Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Company. RIP
Yeah i pitched his last album to my friend as if Jason Molina had a bizarre deadpan sense of humor
yeah, he's not quite as dark lyrically but there are a lot of similarities.
This is it! I’ve been trying to figure this out for months. Thank you!
Just commented this without even seeing yours. Spot on
check out MJ’s self titled record, sounds like a lot like didn’t it rain
Such a tight band and wonderful arrangements :))) One of my fav albums of 2024
Salute to all the Musicians playing with him...
Beautiful job to Xandy. His vocal harmonies were lovely too
Xandy is the Wednesday / Lenderman secret weapon.
@@KyleReiff so true!!!!
Enjoying from my beach home here in Buffalo
I've never heard of or listened to this guy before today and I'm very VERY glad I clicked on this performance. I am now a fan. Wow!
love him. epitome of "a cool girl broke up with me"

Guy on the fiddle single handedly healed me and I don’t even know his name smh
Xandy Chelmis. He also plays pedal and lap steel beautifully.

So good! My favorite artist of 2024! You don't know the shape I'm in, reminds me of OG Kurt Vile! Love it!
Very wilco-core with Alex G type vocals and incredibly profound lyrics
I love this immediately
He’s giving young Jay Farrar
@@thetennispro5 Alex Farrar was involved in production and Alex and Jay are brothers so makes sense.
first time here? welcome welcome
@@tomlin09 They are legit brothers? I have followed Farrar for a long time, and never knew his brother was in AVL.
"wilco-core" 🙄
We need young musicians like this to come along every once in a while to reassure us that good music will never die.

There are thousands of young musicians doing great stuff like this. They just don't all get national recognition.

Love how he grooves when playing.
Favorite artist I’ve found in a long time, manning fireworks is a peak album
This was incredible. MJ is so good, the rest of the band killed it too.
Gonna go down as one of the greats Imo
Music has been so good this past year or so, what a time to be tuned in
This might be my new favorite band and I'm only 3:30 in.... Whew I've been missing out on these guys!!!

Yep - and SM....I call it country Pavement sometimes. So good.
If I just listen not watch, Jason Molina of Songs Ohia is singing through MJ. Haunting.
