These guys make great videos. Ive been using them as a go to for years now and they never let me down! Precise, to the point and excellent visual information and details! Thank you guys for saving my ass! Way better then 5 guys a 12 pack and the Chilton!
I’m a little confused on the deviation part, so does that mean 10% from the highest number? Example I did a reading today and got 150 165 175 170 so deviation would be 17.5? And since the lowest is 150 then the deviation is too much?
+Luis Sonoma Thanks for watching! You generally do not want to see any of the cylinders have more than a 10% difference. It does appear that there is a compression issue with the cylinder at 150 psi at the very least. That is more than a 10% difference from not even the highest reading you got.
@@1AAuto Thank you very much. It’s off a Nissan D21. It’s smokes a lot so I figured it could be the valve stem seal but with compression being that off I’m assuming rings are pretty worn as well. Plugs weren’t fouled or didn’t have any oil build up on it so maybe new rings and valve stems seals can have this run longer. 🤷🏿♂️
Hello! I have a 350 ci v8 motor .. long time sitting. Pulled off the spark plugs, they were black in color as if it was too rich. I did a dry compression test only (twice) and bank (2,4,6,8 are 175 psi each) & bank (1,3,5,6 are 150 psi each). What could be the cause (is it due to carbon build up or timing..) and would it not make the engine run?
I done the compression test on my car engine but in 3 cylinder the gauge indicate 125 but slowly drop the pressure is it normal?? as one of the valve may be open

Go to your local parts store ie: autozone, O'Reilly, advanced auto etc. Get the haynes repair manual for your specific make model and year. It is a highly detailed instruction manual on overall inspections, general preventive maintenance and overhauling your engine and transmission and all aspects and modes of your car.
Hi there , you forgot to tell us about your Battery charger , what kind of Charger we need to keep the battery Charged while cranking the Engine ? thanks ..
+bill williams Thanks for checking us out! This could be something such as a blown head gasket, an issue with the pistons, piston rings, or there is a valve that is stuck open or a valve gasket. We would highly recommend getting this diagnosed if this is the case. 1AAuto.com
I wish I knew this before I bought the used car I'm driving now. My car has Low engine compression and the clutch gave out and had to replace it. Now I have to deal with the engine.
@@1AAuto really appreciate the feedback. Not sure if you know but I can't find a straight answer. I did the test on a 2009 Subaru Forester 2.5x and got back 160, 162, 165, and 180 psi. Do you know if this is acceptable? I heard anything within 15% is fine but again wanted to confirm. If you can of course. Thanks!
@@RayTuscany I've seen other videos and they've stated that the engine should be at operating temperature because the combustion chamber expands when it's hot therefore giving you a more accurate reading. I'm like you, I'm still trying to get a straight answer?? 🤷♂️🤷♂️

Ok
This video told me EXACTLY what I needed to know to test my project car. I'm a novice, in case you were wondering.

This must be the alternate universe where Graham Stephan is a mechanic.
Great video, lots of good information !
I needed to know how to compression test my car. Went to your video. I have the exact same car and engine. 01 Altima 2.4 very helpful.
My question is how do you perform that test on cars that you have take the intake manifold off to get to the sparkplug???
1:44 distributor disconnection to disable unwanted spark
2:02 disconnect fuel injectors or fuel fuse
Did you guys open the throttle plate all the way? I’ve seen a video that said to do that but I’m not sure if that would apply to mine.
Wow you guys really blew up great video btw would be cool to see an updated version tho
Aren't you supposed to block the throttle wide open?
Do you have to have all the spark plugs removed if you only want to check one cylinder?
Do u gotta take all the spark plugs out or just on the cylinder u pressure testing on
i have 2006 chevy colorado have 180 psi in the cylinders is good compression
Do you have to remove the battery terminals when removing spark plugs?
Would you need to clear the check engine light after this test ?

The Haynes manual for my Ram 5.7 says 40% deviation. That seems extreme.

Could be carbon buildup, Try and use some fuel additives
need to open intake throttle all open when test compression ?

What brand is the tester?
Short n informitive, nice 😊

Warm or cold engine?
Hi can anyone tell me whats a good compression on a 2003 kia rio sedan 1.6l thank you

So what happens if one cylinder reads 150 psi and one the other ones reads 180 psi ?
NoneMechanic101 bad
Nothing they are good
You got a problem.
Sell the damn car before it RIP
They are fine. Anything within 20% is fine

Do you need to do this on a warm engine?
+M C Thanks for watching! No the engine does not need to be warm to perform a compression test.

For the right test do you really need to take out all the spark plugs?
Yes
Yes it will give you an inaccurate reading otherwise
Can I just unplug the injectors
if you have headphones on you can hear the cameraman breathing :D
Completely worthless. No mention of how to interpret the data.
