In the Lost Tribe maze, there are rocks at every junction that have a picture on them. If you cross-reference them with the goblin tribe book, the pictures are the symbols of the tribes of the north, east, south, and west, and whichever direction the picture matches is the safe way to go until the next junction. No pits to fall into if you follow the pictures.
I did lost tribe with a candle on my HCIM today. You only fall if you walk the wrong way, and even if you do fall, you can tp out with chronicle. If you read further in the quest guide on the wiki it explains this.
you can safe spot the first 2 forms of the witches house quest, you just have to do it on the other side of the shed and stand under the monster til it goes into the corner behind the broken chair. then you can safe spot if you stand next to the chair :)
Regarding 4 minute mark, it won't kill you, it'll extinguish your light source and little bugs will hit you for 1-2 incredibly fast. You can just relight the candle and they bugger off. I'm 99% sure thats the case.
If you have a candle and fall into the pit, your light source gets extinguished and you start getting hit for constant 1s and 2s (a hit every game tick) until you either relight your candle or you die.
Btw there's also a "stronghold" at cockroaches under edgevill which gives you 5-10k coins. Never understood why no one uses that place for beginners. But yea. Go there. You get a pair of nice gloves as well
I can't believe people forget about H.A.M storerooms, I did that on my normal Ironman for all my cash, 30 Ring of Recoils and all my Teleport Jewellery

But to answer your question, no it's not instant death, your light source goes out and you will start taking 1 damage per tick until you get out of the cave, which may be difficult without a teleport.
Do The Feud and then do the Rogue Trader (Runes) mini-quest after. Ali will always sell you Cosmics and Laws in Al Kharid after completion without Wildy Mage Arena risk.
If you want loads of nature runes, rush fairy tale pt 1 and start 2 so you can use fairy rings. The enchanted valley earns you loads of nature runes, the trees are really easy to kill, and you also get a rune axe pretty fast :D You're welcome :)
And if you're planning on making battlestaves or need crap loads of cosmic runes for whatever reason, I recommend doing the Myreque questline including Darkness of Hallowvale (or get 70 prayer and do morytania hard diaries for Burgh teleports), and do Temple Trekking + Burgh De Rott Ramble (backwards trekking), avoid all combat situations on easy routes and get ~1800 noted pure ess every hour for pretty much running back and forth (completing the puzzles is required.)

Would that thieving place be decent for high alching? I wonder if you'd break even or even profit slightly thieving and then alching the stuff. Magic XP, thieving XP and potential cash? Seems like a win-win for a low level. Heck, maybe even with low alch.
you can just attack the gangsters once and when you do damage you can run away until the timer where they despawn and you will get all the loot if you did damage to every single one
But you can kind of safespot the first two forms with melee! You attack and run back, and if you have small intervals between each attack, the first two forms don't swing at you. It's what I did :)

You can teleport out of Lumbridge swamp if you fall into a pit but if you don't have a teleport/better light source you're for sure going to die

its a pretty common money making method for ironman, you also get a shit ton of easy clues.
