The great serve & volley practitioners like McEnroe, Conners, Laver, and Nastase were very acrobatic. They were very fun to watch.
I have to wonder if there existed courts with various speeds and add to that a ban on newest racquet technology would tennis allow all types of play be effective . Tennis is the most fun to watch when there are conflicting styles. I always think of edberg-Chang rivalry. There were courts that suited changs game and likewise with edberg. But these two had the most contradictory games, you had the serve and volley and constant attacking of the net versus Chang s counterpunch and using his speed to get to volleys that would have been a winner for edberg against almost every one but Chang. But it was the opposing styles that showed the crowd the strengths of each player. We will never see matches like this again. We have to watch players who are all power baseliners. With advanced string, racquet and spin technology along with slower courts and heavier balls .
The courts have been slowed down so much that the payoff from this game style isnt so good as it used to be. Also, almost ALL players today have great ground strokes; a serve volley style doesnt just have to beat one great ground stroke player in the final, they have to get through 4, 5, 6, 7 matches to win a tournament now, and maybe more if we're talking qualies at a slam; 10 matches maybe. Unless they actively separate the surfaces again, and bring back some genuinely fast courts, I dont really see how this style can survive, or thrive, given the current slow courts and solid ground stroke players.
I miss this kind of face off in the Modern Game. Serve and Volley against Baseliner. Mac against Borg. Today it is all sit on the baseline and hit the ball as hard as you can until someone misses or you hit a winner. Snooze fest.
