Yes. August will be two years with my authority. Been having warranty issues with the truck. Im out of warranty next summer. Working out what I want to do with the truck. In the process of getting a logistic trailer again. Reefer was a great option the last two years. What I did in the past seems to be what I need to do again.
@@starcardave339 Dave, a couple more thoughts (I was busy the other day when I responded). Of course, you have to know your numbers but it might be time to dump that truck. If you are going to lose the warranty, things could get expensive, right quick. I’m a reefer guy and running coast to coast so I keep all new equipment; when I hit the road, I’m out for months. When I see 200,000 on the odometer, I start thinking about dumping it. The little lady shopping with her toddlers is not going to buy brown lettuce and half-rotten strawberries! Even for you though, if you are going to go back to concerts and entertainment, those people are going to want someone whom they can depend on. Yes, new equipment can have problems also but life is about increasing the probabilities to avoid problems. In regard to today’s trucks, anything can happen after 200K and hopefully nothing happens prior to 200K. I've had plenty of problems prior to 200K but those trucks are worth fixing and it's under warranty. I'm not going to sit, broke down, losing revenue, have old equipment, AND, have to write the check for the repairs; I'm not doing that! And, those repairs are probably a disaster; it's very hard to find competent people for repairs. Repair shops have very little to lose; they can file bankruptcy and be gone. A manufacturer (Peterbilt, Kenworth, etc.) has A LOT to lose. The idiots on YT will argue for their junk used equipment but most of them are not dedicated truckers anyway; they’re playing. Most work harder to get home three days per week than doing the actual work. A sure way to lose accounts is to have equipment that is not able to complete the job. Keep in mind, if a person cannot complete the work, there are 1,000 other trucks that CAN complete the work, and, without trouble! Broke down = pissed off shippers, pissed off receivers, and pissed off brokers (if a person uses a broker). The accounts will be gone! Furthermore, if you do go back to concerts, there are far more people involved than just the people that I mentioned. People have purchased tickets also. If a concert would have to be canceled specifically because of junk transport equipment, that concert account is gonnnnnnnnnnnnnne! These equipment decisions are very real issues. I think my next one might be the new Pete 589; that’s the new long-nose Pete but with the wider cab. I have over forty years in this business and we had some of the first Pete 379s, in the early 1980s. The 379s were great trucks; the 389s were great trucks; I’d bet the new 589 is going to be great as well. We are now past the ISX nightmare and I have been seeing and hearing some good stories about the X15; that seems to be a good engine. I’ve been talking to a dealer in Texas; those people are looking for the 589s in 2024. If you go with new again, try to get at least 500K on the engine and 750K on the transmission and rear ends, with no time limit… mileage only! You should be able to get this with zero extra dollars. Then at least the major items are covered. Hammer down! 👍👍👍👍
@@truthseeker5890 I’m on the same wavelength. I’m looking at that same Pete but leaning towards the new Mack. It’s cheaper, probably as reliable. There is an outside chance I’d consider the Western Star 57X. It’s basically a Cascadia with a better looking hood. I don’t like my Freightliner in Knoxville. I may have to get away from Daimler. I’m going to take this one to Pittsburgh power. Under warranty I had the whole fuel system replaced as well as injectors and the DPF. The truck was severely over fueling, and I was able to limp it into freightliner in Ocala Florida. Now the emissions is acting up and I’m sure it’s because of the over fueling. Going to do the diesel force cleaning and start usually the max mileage fuel additive. If the light for the omissions stays out after doing this, through next summer, I would consider holding this truck one additional year past warranty and sell it at around 630,000 miles.
Getting ready to sell the reefer and buy a newer logistics trailer. These reefer rates suck. I don’t want to be owning this when it needs a new unit. My intention was to run it to 20,000 hours and no more.
It’s a battle. I’m not running big revenue. Taking more time off. Doing maybe $2.80 all miles with the reefer. Watching all the RUclips truckers pack it in. Looks like it’s just the beginning of a deep slide downwards. I thought it would only take a few months to shake out the extra capacity.
Saw you at Knoxville T/A yesterday (11-29-2022), Dave. I was rolling out after an oil change and fuel filters. Saw you backed in; looked like the shades were closed up tight; didn’t want to risk waking you. 👍👍👍
Dave, are you still alive?
Still battling these rates?
Just checking in.👍👍👍👍
