Queen Of Tarts Nostalgic BRITISH RARE Treat

- Queen Of Tarts Nostalgic BRITISH RARE Treat, a delightful cake batter baked in Yorkshire pudding tins with a jam-filled centre and topped with coconut.
The exact origins of Queen of Tarts are somewhat obscure, as is often the case with traditional recipes passed down through generations. They seem to be a variation of classic British tea cakes or sponge cakes, combining elements of the Victoria sponge (named after Queen Victoria) with the frugal practice of using readily available ingredients like jam and coconut.
Jam and coconut have been common ingredients in British baking, especially during the 20th century when these were often used to add flavour and texture to simple cakes and biscuits. The use of jam as a filling dates back even further, as it was a practical way to use preserved fruits and add moisture and sweetness to baked goods.
The name "Queen of Tarts" may playfully reference the term "queen of hearts," adding a whimsical royal twist to a simple, homey dessert. The tarts' hidden centre and regal-sounding name align with the tradition of naming cakes and pastries after royals, adding a touch of charm and nostalgia.
Many in the UK remember Queen of Tarts fondly as a treat from school cafeterias or homemade by grandparents. These cakes evoke memories of simpler times and comfort food. They are often associated with British home baking, characterized by straightforward methods and the use of pantry staples to create comforting, satisfying desserts.
They represent a piece of culinary heritage that connects generations, often evoking a sense of nostalgia for afternoon teas or childhood snacks. Today, they might not be as widely known as more contemporary desserts, but they hold a special place in the hearts of those who grew up enjoying their simple pleasures.
While not as famous as other British treats like scones or Victoria sponges, Queen of Tarts is a delightful example of the creativity and resourcefulness in traditional British baking, where even the humblest ingredients can create something extraordinary.

Don’t know how true it is but I’ve heard that RUclips doesn’t count the likes that appear at the start of a video. Apparently it’s better to do it halfway through.
😂 "...he says, spilling it all over." Where would we be if we couldnt laugh at ourselves! Another good one! Thanks!
Yes clumsy in my old age these days! Always chuckle at myself. Thank you. Best, Rik
Please keep these classic recipes coming-sweet and savory. It's not my tradition (US, Eastern European descent) so I love to see what others grew up with. I think we have an obligation to keep these wonderful dishes alive for future generations. Feeding our loved ones is such an important part of family, cultural and honestly, our human heritage and the classic 'old time' foods not only bring back our memories but help us create new ones to share with our younger generations.
Very well said indeed! Thank you. Best, Rik
I love your old fashioned recipes they bring back so many memories of growing up in England. My mum was always baking with me helping (licking the spoon lol). I really appreciate gems like these. Keep em coming please. It's so nice to have some of these forgotten recipes revived and enjoyed. It's the sort of ingredients that a lot of people would have in the cupboard and not too expensive to go and get. These would be great around Christmas time too. Thanks for these great old timey recipe - we need to keep them alive. My gran was a great cook & baker, but my mom was not interested and I didn't take to cooking & baking until my teens - by that time we had moved far away to another city so I didn't get learn much from gran (which I regret today).
One of my favourite childhood treats were fairy cakes - these were made especially for birthday parties (the old fashioned kind of party that were basically just all sugar). These were vanilla mini cupcakes made in a shallow cupcake tin. They were made with extra baking powder (I think) so they rose with little peaks. Once baked you cut the peak off, cut it in half and then frosted it back onto the cake base back- to- front so they looked like little wings. We didn't decorate with edible glitter back then, but I think I'm going to dig out this recipe & have a go, this time adding some edible gold or silver glitter sprinkled over. This might make a great gift for xmas.
The Mixed Up Craft YT channel has great gift box tutorials, including a little xmas lamp - a little xmas angel inside with glittery wings might be great as a stocking filler for the nephews & nieces.
My Lockdown Rasoi YT channel has a tutorial on DIY edible glitter using cornflour, water & food colouring, dried out in the sun.
I was brought up with fairy cakes Mum made them every Sunday. I have filmed and I have a video waiting to be edited then upload. Thank you. Best, Rik
I've never had these but oh! I live for the old fashioned recipes and know I can always find them with you.Thank you so much Rik!

Rik I do watch a few YT channels but I consider yours to be one of the best uses of my time. I am real old school and still use pigs head to fed my family but I am an IT bloke. Powerful PC and four monitors. So I look deep and just love your historic recipes. I know you did the Bedfordshire clanger but the Buckinghamshire badger is different. I would love to see your take on this!
Great suggestion. Thank you, John. Best, Rik
I love old recipes. Thanks for this one.
Thank you. Best, Rik
I was going to say that I remember eating Queen of Heart tarts as a child, but I've changed my mind, as that would put me into an age bracket that I, as a lady, am loathe to admit to! So, all I'll say, Rik, is that I never ate one in me life, but I do remember my mam and nain talking about making them, and thank you for the reminder with this recipe... I'll give them a try! 🤣😇
Ha ha ha what is age - "wisdom and experience" - so who cares eh! Thank you. Best, Rik

Here's to Rik, rescuing Britain's food history one wonderful recipe at a time!🎉🍽🇬🇧
I actually think I have a recipe for these in one of my cookbooks...but then, I'm getting old.😂 Might be in the comprehensive Joy of Cooking (older version, circa 1980s), or maybe one of my historical cookbook reproductions from early America, or pamphlets from a historic house, or (and this is probably it, come to think of it) the Colonial Williamsburg Cookbook. Great stuff, Rik -- keep it coming!❤
Will do! Thank you. Best, Rik
