A very slick video production. I wouldn't expect anything less from you my friend. Your butterfly control setup is very simple in construction, hidden from the naked eye, and easy to manipulate. Well done. Enjoy your new sound(s) and ride safe.
The handle bars is Ape Hanger 12" narrow from Burly Brand. It has a hole on the dimple so the electrical wire can be hide inside those 1" handle bar pipe. The extended cable set is also from Burly. The forward control kit & engine guard is OEM from Harley for XL type.
Ya I still love mine. The bass reverberation when the butterfly is open cannot be expressed in recordings. You can feel the pressure in the air around you change when you open it. Closed it's like a mean stock muffler sound, good for neighbors
I'm using Sanyo Xacti CG100 full HD camcorder, small camcorder but quiet nice quality. Yes, the sound of this exhaust is lower than the Screamin' Eagle slip-ons, but the rumble is much heavier. During idle, the rumble is deep much more like a big twin engine sound, and when you punch it, its louder than the Screamin' Eagle slip-ons. Thanks for stop bye. :)
yes it is! \m/ it'll shake your heart beat. LOL But not hurting your ear I must say, coz its more to deep base - low dB sound, not a high pitch raspy sound. Don't you agree?
Myreon Smith You right! I can't find it on ebay anymore. No worries, try to go to shop(dot)patriotpipes(dot)com or pertronix(dot)com you will find it there complete with 3 version of coating and price. Happy hunting!
well thats the 1st thing i thought when i saw you puting bare naked hands on the exhaust thats why i comment about burns.. switch and cable is the best choice as u say u dont even have to get off the bike and use it even while u r pulled over by cops well done :)
Hi.. Is a plug and play system bro. But just like any other after market exhaust, it is recommended to also replace the breather kit and install a fuel mapping system like supertuner or fuelpak. I personally choose fuelpak, because you can do the setting by your self, no computer needed, and if someday you replace your exhaust to other brand, you can resetting the fuelpak to match the exhaust caracter.
I'm getting ready to order this system for my 1200C. Thinking about buying an choke cable (like one that comes on a carbed Harley) and use that to adjust the butterfly on the fly.
great video and bike. Are you going to make a video showing the choke cable install? That sounds like the way to go. Do you use a universal choke cable? And where do you mount the choke knob. Also, did your pipes have an indentation on the back of front pipe just below the top weld and right where the heat shield strap is. I've had two sets and both have that dent. Can't figure out why unless its a clearance for forward control. Nice job, capskie
well... it tooks about 45 - 60 minute ride from my office to home (include traffic madness & 5 minutes long red light) & I always shut the butterfly once I reach my neighborhood specially late at night. Its hot, but not that hot. See, the hottest part is on the small pipes but on the silencer area is less. And of course, you wearing gloves when riding right? But hey, I already modified (again) the switch using cable & choke switch, so I don't need to pullover to shut or open the butterfly... :P
Not much, but yeah... got scrap a little bit, specially after I replaced the rear stock shock breaker from 13" to progressive 11". It look nicer but had consequences. Lucky the scrap is underneath so you barely see it.
I really like that butterfly feature. Does setting the butterfly halfway open/closed have any effect on the sound? And where did you purchase the Patriot Defender exhaust? Ride safely.
Yes it does. You can set it how closed or open you like. It doesn't have to be completely closed or opened. So you can always stopped whenever the sound fits you. I tried to find those pipes on ebay just now where I get one before, but couldn't find it. I even checked to the website (pertronix dot com) and still can't find it. So I guess they stop producing this pipes. To bad.
Thanks Thomas. I plan to make one, but maybe soon. But if you need to see now, message me you email address & I can send you a picture of it. Yes I use a universal choke knob. Just like you said, the pipe does have indentation on that spot. It is for clearance of forward control. :P
Hey.....just got this exhaust, 2 questions for you.......1) did you use the OEM style exhaust gaskets or the flat screaming eagle type......and 2) did the flange have a gap or did the pipe squeeze into the exhaust port?
+Welsh Hooligan Hi Man, I'm using OEM gaskets. The flange does have a small gap, but if you installed correctly, there will be no leak at all. But be careful on that area when you test it, it burn my finger once. yew! What I remember, there are no trouble when we try to the the pipe into the exhaust port. So, no squeeze needed bro.
@@marchnte ahh that's true. It seems that they stopped producing this exhaust since couple years ago, I'm not sure why. That's to bad. If I can find the used one on the web, I will let you know.
I'm still trying to record he sound while ride it on the road but still didn't get a good result because of the wind sound that also got recorded and ruin the whole sound.
well, I wouldn't say it scratch proof though. It is a nice & smooth black coating but if it hits rough surface it will get scratch just like any other black surface materials does. Even accidently hit by a screwdriver... it will get scratch.
+capskie Thanks! Just placed my order. I love the shape and style of this exhaust and i dont see any of this on the road. I know 2 into 1 outperforms the 2's every time. But how would u compare the sound of this exhaust to the one i got on (staggered shortshot)?
+Soul Assassin Congratulations! \m/ V&H Shortshot Staggered was my first exhaust after the stock exhaust :P then my second's was Screamin Eagle Street Performance slip-ons, third was V&H Big radius, forth was this Patriot Defender, fifth was Khrome Werks Slip-ons .... yes, I keep changing exhaust, sorry for that. LOL ... and today, back to Screamin Eagle Street Performance slip-ons but with modified baffles. In my opinion, from those five exhaust, the Patriot Defender (with the butterfly opened) has the most different character in sound. The sound is dominating with bass and deep rumble. Loud, but low dB. Its more like a sound from big twin engine, while Shortshots is more raspy, high pitch without bass kind of sound.... and so loud. So its more to personal preference wether you like the heavy sound or the raspy one. =) Are you using super tuner or fuelpak? If you using fuelpak, don't forget to resetting your mapping. You can use setting for V&H Blackout on your Patriot Defender. You can download the setting on vance and hines web. Ride safe bro.
Thanks for the heads up. Seems like this exhaust might be exactly what im looking for; beautiful, deep base. Im replacing my shortshots because it is more obnoxious in its loudness. I also like the look of this exhaust even compared to VH 2:1 comp. series As for air:fuel management, im actually still shopping around. From what i gather, fuelpak might be the one since i dont plan turning my ride into a drag racing missile. Also with fuelpak, i can readjust the setting if i decide to go with another exhaust. I know power commander u can do a lot with but i honestly wont be doing too much to my ride to put that in good use. Fuelpak is easier to manage and work with. What else should i be considering?
Hey man those pipes look great! i am considering getting a pair for my 2013 iron but am not very sure about the sound... when the tap is off are they much louder than stock pipes? how would they compare in sound to some vance and hines would you reckon? thanks!
Thank Man. Yes, when the butterfly's open, it sound much louder than stocks. But when it close, the sound is just like stock pipes (more to engine sound) My previous pipes was Vance & Hines Big Radius. Both are loud but to me V&H is louder. Patriot's sound is more to base - deep - rumble while V&H is more to high dB - rasp - less base. During idle, V&H is louder. What I like about Patriot beside the tunable sound, the sound of the rumble is just like a bigtwin engine. So.. which sound type you prefer? :P
To be honest.. I've sell it couple month a go. Not because its bad, broken, destroyed or other bad thing, but just because I get bored. LOL You should see my other video bro, the newest. :) But aside of that, yes it has been more than a year I ride with this exhaust (+/-12.000 Km) the exhaust was excellent! The black coating remain, no changing color, surprisingly good quality material. The butterfly also still in a good shape. Overall, its a good quality exhaust man. :P
Dude, that is KILLER!! Sounds awesome. Is it my impression or the tune is a little off? On the "loud mode", during idle, I noticed a little bit of uniformity... Is that normal?
capskie You're welcome! Not a problem. I just watched the video again, and I'm 99% sure it was my mistake. What I meant was what they call a "rough idle", kind of unstable, as if the engine's not running well, normally too rich. But again, I think it was only my impression.
Arthur Sperotto :P but here's something to consider, I use V&H Fuelpak for fuel mapping, and because fuelpak doesn't have the exact map setting for Defender, I use setting for V&H Black Out 2 to 1 while the guy from V&H recommend me to use setting for Python 2 to 1. I have try both setting, but I feel setting for Blackout was more suitable. A bit lose on low gear, but powerfull on the upper gear, while python is the other way around. Is that's why you've noticed the idle is unstable?
capskie It may be. But the reason I said that in the first place is because I had just finished watching a video in which a professional bike mechanic was talking about his fuel mapping on his 883, and of course, because he was a professional, it was near perfect. It was one of the smoothest, cleanest and most uniform idles I've ever heard from an 883. So I thought yours was rough. But after watching again, I'm almost sure it was just my impression. Don't even worry about it, friend, it's all good!
+Armando Montoya (Director) Thanks. That was from La Rosa Design. But ideally the footpeg still have to go though. Otherwise the solo bag wont attached perfectly.
I am thinking of turning it into a 1200 within 6 months or maybe immediately. Can you recommend a 1200 you like? P.s. I Love the style / look of the 883. Thanks again, sincerely! :) P.s. I am 5'9", 195, fairly muscular guy.

+Joseph Williams uhmm... yeah a lil bit. :P coz I'm using 11 inch progressive shock so sometimes it kiss the road when I do that sharp turn. Luckily the scratch is really on the lower part of the pipes so you wont see it from side unless you go under it.
Been there. But because I ride this baby to work & facing hell traffic everyday, my back hurt a bit so I replaced the bar with this 12" ape. And believe it or not is more comfy for me. =P
Yes that's true, I got mine scrape because I'm using 11" progressive shock. Well actually, when I was using Vance & Hines Black Radius before this and it does scrape too. But you wont see the scrape anyway unless you go under.
FP-3390 Settings for V&H Black Out 2 to 1, bro. V&H also recommend FP-3049 (Python 2 to 1) but I after comparing both settings, FP-3390 is better, IMHO.
Hi there! I believe I have the same exhaust you have. I want to copy your setup so my neighbors don’t hate me. Do you have an IG? I want to send you a photo of how mine looks.
Butterfly off definitely. About time someone opens a video with a kick ass song. Awesome bike.

Hi, OFF means open so its a loud mode.
Use headphone for more detail sound because the different between loud & quiet is on the bass/deep low dB. :)
I'm using Sanyo Xacti CG100 full HD camcorder, small camcorder but quiet nice quality. Yes, the sound of this exhaust is lower than the Screamin' Eagle slip-ons, but the rumble is much heavier. But not hurting your ear I must say, coz its more to deep base - low dB sound, not a high pitch raspy sound. Don't you agree?
Yes I do I had to listen with my monitor headphones to truly appreciate it.

Since you mention it, I just did with Db meter, but from android app on the cell phone. 82-83 dB in silence mode and 88 - 89 dB in loud mode.

I run Big Radius on mine Iron but like this a lot ,clean look too.
Big Radius is a mean looks and sound. I even put a quiet baffle to reduce the sound. lol. But its a cool exhaust though.
Super job on the video. Great looking bike and thanks for the sound differences.

Here's an update video for switch modifications. ruclips.net/video/2zlWBbFOMEA/видео.html

Hey, I am considering these defender's for my 2013 sportster was it a plug and play system or did you have to take it to a dyno?
Have you tried the quiet baffle insert, got one on mine it keeps the deep note minus some volume..
Are those handle bars from harley? And also the forward controls and engine guard both harley???
When you say butterfly on and off, which is open and closed. Open = on or off?
Tell me about it bro. :) I have Vance and Hines Big Radius before... Good looking thing but just like you said.... xP

Does that mean the Frame is larger?
Thanks for the video too!
Don't know much, but one thing for sure, its a Sportster code. (XL883N Iron, XL1200N Nighster, XL1200X Forty-Eight, XL883R Roadster, so on...)
dont go for the 883, no go in them at all, you will want to trade it in for a 1200 within a week.

Yes it can. No worries. just google for Patriot Defender Exhaust, you'll find the pict of Mid-Control Sportster with it.
its really hard to tell on youtube, I hear a pitch difference, but is it really quieter or louder?
+sammy60164 if you wearing a headphone, you'll hear the difference on the bass.

Its La Rosa Design solo bag with rustic brown color. You can find it on Ebay.
What FP code did you use?
FP-3390 Settings for V&H Black Out 2 to 1, bro.
V&H also recommend FP-3049 (Python 2 to 1) but I after comparing both settings, FP-3390 is better, IMHO.
