Think the thing I love most about this Sunbaru, is its 'does exactly what it say's on the tin' approach to its design and function. Eg. This button is snow and dirt, this button is snow and mud, pick one, no complications, actually a breath of fresh air in a market of competing technology. Excellent review!
Great to see a review of the "non-mainstream" brands 👍🏽 Here in south africa the subarus are definitely not popular (German SUVs dominate the market). Certainly Subaru has a much better perceived reliability here in SA.
I chosed the CR-V Hybrid AWD over this Forester because of lower consumption and far more interesting hybrid system. The best qualities of this Subaru, though, unfortunately were not evident in your test: reliability and good offroad capabilities. Great review as always!
Bought the Forester 3 months ago. Previously I owned a Volvo v70, a BMW series 3, a range rover sport. I love the Subaru! The driving experience on sport mode on twisty roads is quite impressive for a 2.0 litre non turbo engine. The AWD of Subaru is impressive. The big windows offer great view and nice feeling. The eyesight system works perfectly on adaptive cruise control and lane assist. Eyesight on Greek roads where the lane signs are poor works very well. It feels and it looks manufactured in Japan 100%. The cons is the electric motor is really low power. Summertime when you have the a/c on the car rarely drives on EV.
I have been a fan of Japanese motorcycles, culture, language and now cars. They offer just enough for the product to function within the law of the land. As always Thomas, you hit the nail on head without hitting your thumb!
I like Subaru as a car brand - the models are quirky, different and generally have good durability. In many ways, Subaru is a bit like Citroën, but with a significantly better reputation for durability. Still, I like the approach both brands have to not be sports oriented and far from snobbish. Instead, it is about getting the job done, but with certain peculiarities and facilities that few other car brands have (eg the large window areas). Thank you for also showing us cars like this. Keep up the good work :)
+Hvitserk - well said. A good sum up. Excellent Review and driving part from Thomas as usual, very interesting. A Subaru will appeal to the faithful, and deservedly so, for the reasons you've well explained, a bit like a Saab used to. What cars do the Saab faithful buy now, I wonder! Cheers.
Thank you, Thomas. Very informative review and I tend to agree with you about I guess everything. We've bought one recently as a primary family vehicle. I cannot say this is the car I would buy for myself, but family wise it simply is a great choice. Large and easy accessible trunk, great interior space, perfect visibility, inside it looks and feels well built, driver monitoring system is actually quite good as you simply jump into car and it automatically adjusts seats, mirrors, climate and radio. I didn't pay attention at first, but it's very helpful when you have kids and two drivers using car. I should also mention that suspension is excellent and car behaves very well in snowy and icy conditions and is great on gravel roads. Fuel consumption is 8,8 l per 100 km in mostly city driving. I believe if the car was used only by me fuel consumption would be lower, as wife is quite an aggressive driver. Driver assistance systems that are connected to cameras like adaptive cruise control, collision prevention and lane keep assist, etc, work great (car beeps and breaks itself), however will turn off during extreme weather conditions like thunderstorms with shower rains and when it's heavy snowing, ie when visibility is very poor. I would definitely recommend Subaru Forester for families living in rural or suburban areas, obviously if you can live with slow acceleration and somewhat annoying engine sound at high revolutions.
Personally, it does not matter that much how a vehicle looks, especially if it is an SUV. If it does what it is set out to do better than the relative competition and is in my price point, then I will buy. Usually the interior feel, comfort, build quality (relative to the price) and materials used is most important to me. And of course...how it drives. Substance over style. That is why I absolutely love the GLB a little more than the GLC in terms of being an SUV and compromise. Cheers, Thomas. 😎
NIce review, thanks .....here in Kenya Subaru forester are popular, I own one, they are reliable and very practical cars. Hopefully I will upgrade to that model sometimes in future......
Thank you, Thomas! I have the MY18 and I am very satisfied with it. I made a test drive with the new e-boxer. As you said, it is a little better drive in the new model, but it is very familiar with the predesessor. From the aspect of saving petrol, it is not worth for me to make an upgrade to the e-boxer model, but I like the new one definitely! I am not sure what I should do. Greatings from a subaru-fanboy!
I love the large windows and I think it is one area where European and Japanese cars have gotten worse, not better. Back in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and even 1990s, European cars had excellent visibility. Then the windows started to shrink in the name of aerodynamics and style. This car has big windows and sort of a tall wagon shape. I think it's a tall wagon that could be considered an SUV, but it still shows its tall wagon origin.
I'm surprised you find the Subaru mild hybrid to be so similar to Toyota's system. I test-drove the e-Boxer Subaru XV the same day as a Hybrid RAV4 (dealership didn't have the e-Boxer Forester in yet, but it's the same engine) and the difference was night and day. The torque delivered from the Toyota electric engine made a real difference when taking off from the lights, could go longer on battery power, CVT never droned going up hill. Needless to say, we ended up ordering the Toyota.
Thomas seems less than impressed overall LOL. Fortunately for Subaru, they have a small target niche market who will buy these simply because it's a Subaru, even though there are better alternatives on the market. Hopefully the reliability has improved over the last few years.
I don't know why but i love Subaru car, the Forester and the Outback are really great cars, no bullshit techno, no overdesign, no following stupid trends. These cars are simply great. they do the job, reliable, simple. Car that you can trust. bonus: you don't drive a car that everybody have (well...at least here in France :) Subaru sell under 1000 cars here 😭) In fact i think i'm going to test drive both Outback and Forester.
If you restyled it, redid the interior, shrunk it by 25%, replaced the CVT and put a better engine in it it might be a good car. And dumped the Eye Sight system.
Subaru and Mitsubishi are both a shame with the way they've went in the recent decades, the BRZ was a happy blip but besides that both are stuck making outdated cars that are heavily unpopular in Europe. Subaru is probably a bit worse off, however since at least Mitsubishis are extremely reliable. Even Lancia sold double the amount of cars compared to Subaru last year and Lancia only sells one model and only in Italy. On the other hand, great to see a full length review of a less popular car brand!
I'd like to know why Subaru doesn't sell the hybrid version in North America. They sell a ton of hybrid Crosstreks around here so they cannot say North Americans don't like hybrids. I'd be the first to buy one. Well then...
Toyota owns an interest in Subaru , which explains the ugly styling . I would imagine they do not want Subaru undermining the Toyota line with a decent hybrid system.
Excellent review!! I just need your opinion as I am about to buy a 2017 Forester Sport Edition with a Diesel engine. So, comparing to the new e-boxer what would you suggest? Here in Greece the e-boxer costs approx 45 thousand euro, depending the edition and the used 2017 Diesel Sport edition costs about 30-33 thousand euro. I drove both cars and I must say that diesel is so much more faster and feels much stronger mainly due to its more torque. Your kind reply will be appreciated! Thanks and keep up the good work
Thanks for the review Thomas! Do you know what a penalty box is? You know in hockey? Well this vehicle is the equivalent of the auto enthusiasts penalty box. The ref skates in and says "5 years for tripping!!!" and then he points to the Forester.... good review Thomas, always like a Subaru/Ford/Mazda review. Loving my 2019 Outback, better engine (2.5L) than the 2.0L petrols used by the rest of the Subaru range. Eyesight safety system has saved me several times in the last 10 months. Turbo's definitely needed, to reduce fuel consumption and improve performance, but at least the Subaru petrol engines perform better then the under-powered Mazda ones. Still the odd omission of a heated steering wheel option on all new Subaru's in UK, except the Forester! One of the first things i upgraded on my Outback, was the interior bulbs to LED, including the door puddle lights, can't believe they still fit poor halogen bulbs still in 2020.
Autogefühl While under warranty Audis are nice, but they have a reputation for being expensive and troublesome out of warranty. Maybe it is different in Germany, but in the US...
I have 3 Subarus at home, the youngest 2015 Forester. I am waiting for 2025 new model, hopefully with full hybrid (the generation you are driving is too slow). The only thing I will miss in the outgoing model you are driving in this film is physical knobs and these 3 screens (similar to 2013-2019 generation). The 2025 will have a large control panel centrally.
Thomas i own a M-B E 250 W 212 1.8 CGI Rear wheel drive and it consum in Best economic way around 12/100 KM. So this hybrid is a good compromise thank you for your review !
I have to say "NO" to the outside Design! Man könnte meinen, der Pfördner durfte auch mal zeichnen! Innen ist dagegen überwiegend wohl alles gut gelöst, bis auf die Dinge, die da unnötig klapprig sind! Nice Video Thomas.... Weiter so!
Sadly the e-Boxer model is both more expensive and somehow consumes more fuel than the previous version (with just the 2.0 engine). Previous because now e-Boxer is the only engine option.
Hi ! Your philosophy of people like me is totally correct. I don’t need millions of tech and lightening fast infotainment cockpit to be happy. Do you think Subaru by early 2022 will have more hybrid range of SUVs ? Auckland. NZ
Hey Thomas thanks for responding to the request and thanks for the usual detailed review. I have been looking forward to it. and finally its here. We acquired a 2019 model after a long research for a family vehicle, easy to manage by a young driver and provides great visibility and good cargo space. Also its off-road capabilities.
I like Subaru, I hate Subaru's management! There is an XV PHEV in the USA for $35k. That drivetrain should be offered in the People's Republic of Europe as well, on all Subaru models! Subaru already has the technology developed! The new hybrid system is based on two electric motors, the same as Toyota. It'll have symmetrical AWD. It suits Forester and Outback better than XV. I do not understand why Subaru let e-boxer to the market. The idea is good, the delivery terrible. It shakes, the gasoline engine is too small and the electric motor has a whopping 13HP and 65Nm. :( There is also no spare tire. There is a heated steering wheel offered in Forester in Japan. As I said, Subaru's management is so strange. They are destroying a decent niche car manufacturer.
I loved my 2002 Forester that could go anywhere a Jeep could go. They chased the soccer mom market and it has ballooned out in size and the capability has gone all to hell. I am with you on the lack of a spare tire (unacceptable for anything that goes off road or on unimproved roads). I hate leather seats and hard plastic interiors and cladding and garish chrome. It is a SLOWbaru.
Ø 8L / 100Km on Spritmonitor is not really good. :-/ The tail lamps are ugly. It's a way better offroader than the RAV4 AWD and the infotainment system is better, but I'd prefer the RAV4 AWD Hybrid anyway.
Very understated ! In design aspect but I guess purely budget and ultra utilitarian car and always loved that . However need to update exterior, powertrain, and features. Probably 6 speed ZF unit or 4AW would have nailed it. And jack up HP to minimum 200-240hp as a optional in Turbocharged or supercharged form. Anyway nice review.
You should do a test of the 4x4. A few years back, no one absolutely no one (but Land Rover) matched Subaru's AWD. It'd pull on one wheel. Audi, BMW, haldex in general, was no match. Is it still so?
There is ugly and then much further down you'll find Subaru Forester ugly.. With crappy aged engines (150hp will be a super slug on the route) , unreliable CVT transmission and to sum it up dated, shiny plastic interior.... Hybrid to overcome EU CO2 taxes won't help reliability... A big 0/10 for that car..
Thank you Thomas a great review but a little disappointed. The Subaru Forester is renowned for its safety features and go anywhere off road capability. It's not designed for town or city use. I was surprised you didn't know the battery and motor are from Toyota as they have shares in Subaru. This vehicle is aimed at more rural people than city dwellers, so hence my disappointed there was no off road segment. On a personal level, I think the battery and electric motor are too small and the fuel consumption is about average for vehicles of this type. I'm surprised you didn't mention reverse and cross traffic automatic braking. But, on the whole a good presentation. 👍
Subaru caters to one specific type of client: guys who want a reliable car and have a special attraction to ugly cars. I’m afraid to say I’m one of them.
Subaru has a coolness factor that almost no other brand has. You can be a serious car guy but nobody will think you are, you can spend a good chunk of cash on an Outback and nobody will think you're trying to show off.
Like many commenters on here I think this is a very weird looking car and far too “American” in its styling for my European tastes. Subaru is one of those brands that I’m very glad exists for variety and consumer choice, but I can’t imagine ever buying one myself! Which I sort of feel guilty about because we all know how hard life is for small manufacturers.
Subaru brands themselves as the “save the world we love the outdoors” car company...yet they make garbage hybrids and sell gas powered cars. What is the point of this e-hybrid boxer drivetrain? It adds weight and does not deliver any positive change to mpg. They need to invest in proper electric architecture.
The new hybrid system is coming on the market soon. It is based on two electric motors, the same as Toyota. It has a mechanical, symmetrical AWD. I do not understand why they let e-boxer to the market. The idea is great, the delivery terrible.
It is really sad what Subaru has done to the Forester line. What was once a compact tall wagon with AWD has become a huge, garish, heavy soccer-mom mobile. It has also succumbed to the garish gargoyle styling cues so common in Japanese cars these days. Each generation of the Forester has become larger than the last, less off road capable than the last and more expensive than the last. The CVT is a total snooze fest for anyone expecting responsive driving as is the combination of an extreme heavy crossover and an underpowered motor. What Thomas calls “conservative” styling I call garish. Gargoyle taillights, way too much cladding, busy lines in the body and the details of the dashboard. Less is more and the dash looks like it was lifted from a 1980’s Pontiac. Less bling, fewer lines please. And it is immoral to charge 40k+ (Euros or Dollars) and not give thermostatic AC or to use hard plastics on interior trim. No thanks. I loved my old Subaru Forester I had a decade ago, but this thing is just an underpowered minivan with regular doors.
I want to like this! I half do and was considered it but your assessment of it has totally thrown me 🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣 I had the 2009 Subaru Legacy 2.0L boxer diesel for 10 years and loved it, never gave any trouble until the crankshaft went.. I also loved the frameless doors too.
Thanks for your review. A good car ruined by a low torque engine, a terrible transmission and a heavy hybrid system that doesn’t help at all in everyday driving. There are better hybrid SUVs in this class with a much lower fuel consumption.
Yet another reviewer who doesn't seem to understand what Subaru stands for. The design is not dated, its a utilitarian durable and long lasting car that doesn't try to be something it isnt. Subaru is not about keeping up with fashion trends. Its about being individual, the same as those who buy Subarus. Nothing worse than a review by someone who doesnt like the car or spends all their time finding negative things to say. The roads are filled with the same makes and models, its tedious. People are so afraid of being different. That suits me fine as it makes this car more special with its rarity.
Thomas is a good reviewer, wtf is this talk about individuality around an Automotive piece? Noone cares what you drive, heck a vast majority of people could not even tell one car from the other. The e-boxer is a pointless system only there to satisfy the retarded EU emission regulators choking smaller companies while licking the balls of the german big 3 and other big manufacturers. Ever wondered why there are no more new WRX and BRZ yet there are plenty of M models, AMG and S Audi? The 30% Bullshit rule made by our dear EU emission tards is the answer.
Exactly. That slug on the autobahn should always stay in the slow lane. I bet the Aircooled Flat 4 1.3L VW Vanagon we had in Germany back in the 1980s was faster than this thing. And nowhere near as ugly.
Sorry Subaru,, but I feel more good in Dacia Duster 1.3 tce 150 HP. AND IS MORE CHEAP. This car not offer any sensation, and that cvt gear issss, a trash. - I just make an test drive here in Brussels, I will decide to buy betwin Duster and Vitara hybrid.
Great review! The car is ugly and feels a little bit cheap like some japanese cars.. The car we rented had noticeable road noise entering the cabin. But gets you from point A to point B be like an automotive appliance should.
I think that it is quite different than other Japanese cars. The Interior feels very good and built quality is good, leather and so on, even when you compare it so plastics of volkswagen.
Subarus are such intriguing cars, and I love that they use the boxer engine in everything, but they REALLY need to hire some designers. Their cars are straight up ugly.
Ugly? Not at all. In reality people just like them. I have the XV and trust me, it looks interesting when viewed from short distance. On YT it can be different.
Woah what happened!!!! The new Subaru Forester front end just looks like an ugly Opel!!!!!! Big no-no for me! Super good car but i get sick looking at it.
I love Subaru quality and reliability, but please Subaru, get someone better to design your car. Seem every generation is getting uglier. The best looking Forester, and the last, was the 2003 XS luxury model. Simple line and proportioned.

Honda... :-)
Ist gut Panzer jawohl??? Was ist ze thickness of the front glacial plate bitte?
I have 3 Subarus at home, the youngest 2015 Forester. I am waiting for 2025 new model, hopefully with full hybrid (the generation you are driving is too slow). The only thing I will miss in the outgoing model you are driving in this film is physical knobs and these 3 screens (similar to 2013-2019 generation). The 2025 will have a large control panel centrally.
Thomas i own a M-B E 250 W 212 1.8 CGI Rear wheel drive and it consum in Best economic way around 12/100 KM.
So this hybrid is a good compromise thank you for your review !
Good review, the car is decent, wish it had torque converter automatic.
CVT has a torque converter
I have to say "NO" to the outside Design!
Man könnte meinen, der Pfördner durfte auch mal zeichnen!
Innen ist dagegen überwiegend wohl alles gut gelöst, bis auf die Dinge, die da unnötig klapprig sind!
Nice Video Thomas.... Weiter so!
Danke 😊
I love how you pronounce "Subaru." 😎
actually comes closer to the original japanese pronunciation thant Subar000 (Kangarooooo)
@@autogefuehl Yes! You are correct! That's why I love it! 😎
@@autogefuehl I like how you pronounce everything. Almost as soothing as a car door closing.
@@autogefuehl 😁
👌
A particular issue I've always noticed with Subaru is when these plastics age 5 years from new: the become hard, firm and easily scratch-able.
It does feel like driving a smaller car than what it is judging from the view through the windshield.
Great car. Great review as always. 👍
I think Subaru designer is 100 years old, don't want to retire and they can't do nothing about it.
I actually like how it looks than previous generation Forester
You are the best.
🙏🙏
I don’t get CVT gearboxes! What is the benefit??
It is the most efficient transmission
There is also no spare tire.
Sorry Jonas. I get sea-sick when you capture the engine bay in all your videos.
Please made a video of the new Renault Clio V :)
I have owned 2 late model Subaru Outback and 1 Forrester. Outback is way better, with 2.5 motor.
I like subaru thank you Thomas
Ø 8L / 100Km on Spritmonitor is not really good. :-/ The tail lamps are ugly.
It's a way better offroader than the RAV4 AWD and the infotainment system is better, but I'd prefer the RAV4 AWD Hybrid anyway.
But it drives excellent
Should’ve put a 🥕 under the rear hatch and see if it would snap it.
Thanks 🙏 I
Subaru are fantastic, fully equipped and nicely priced. But destroyed by CO2 WLTP EU legislation..
It is unfortunate. I really love the new outback
That is true.. but then every company is suffering, as well as consumers, with this CO2 madness
You should do a test of the 4x4. A few years back, no one absolutely no one (but Land Rover) matched Subaru's AWD. It'd pull on one wheel. Audi, BMW, haldex in general, was no match. Is it still so?
yes
There is ugly and then much further down you'll find Subaru Forester ugly..
With crappy aged engines (150hp will be a super slug on the route) , unreliable CVT transmission and to sum it up dated, shiny plastic interior.... Hybrid to overcome EU CO2 taxes won't help reliability...
A big 0/10 for that car..
Like anyone cares about your opinion.
Is it just me or does Subaru get uglier and uglier each year. Styling is terrible.
Have Subarus really ever been good looking though?
Looks like an Opel, and it’s NOT a compliment
Lasergun I was thinking Pontiac or Nissan- something truly repulsive.
Nice Forester - Greetings from Honda #Hondaimmd
It looks great in Thomas blue! Not this red colour.
Subaru caters to one specific type of client: guys who want a reliable car and have a special attraction to ugly cars. I’m afraid to say I’m one of them.
Subaru has a coolness factor that almost no other brand has. You can be a serious car guy but nobody will think you are, you can spend a good chunk of cash on an Outback and nobody will think you're trying to show off.
less and less of the true forester remain with each gen. Gutless engines, mandatory CVT and ever decreasing reliability... :(
Preach it brother. It is a minivan with regular doors.
That is not American styling- that is the garish crap coming from Japan and Korea. The Americans brands copied the ugly Japanese styling.
Subaru brands themselves as the “save the world we love the outdoors” car company...yet they make garbage hybrids and sell gas powered cars. What is the point of this e-hybrid boxer drivetrain? It adds weight and does not deliver any positive change to mpg. They need to invest in proper electric architecture.
also e boxer is probably the roughest hybrid in the world, the way that engine shakes everytime it turns on is scary.
I half do and was considered it but your assessment of it has totally thrown me 🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣
I had the 2009 Subaru Legacy 2.0L boxer diesel for 10 years and loved it, never gave any trouble until the crankshaft went.. I also loved the frameless doors too.
Thanks for your review. A good car ruined by a low torque engine, a terrible transmission and a heavy hybrid system that doesn’t help at all in everyday driving. There are better hybrid SUVs in this class with a much lower fuel consumption.
thanks for tuning in!
Why would anyone in Germany want to buy a Subaru?
Because he wants to? Because he likes the character or the great overview? 100 people, 100 tastes.
Exactly. That slug on the autobahn should always stay in the slow lane.
I bet the Aircooled Flat 4 1.3L VW Vanagon we had in Germany back in the 1980s was faster than this thing. And nowhere near as ugly.
Because not everyone wants to blow their money on unreliable german cars 😂 how is that even a question..
189cm already in 2022 :))
Sorry, but comparing these cars to Subaru is idiotic (apples and pears). They have zero quality. Have fun with rust in a few years :)
Great review!
The car is ugly and feels a little bit cheap like some japanese cars.. The car we rented had noticeable road noise entering the cabin.
But gets you from point A to point B be like an automotive appliance should.
looks better than most new cars on the road... plus this car is quite popular so ur gonna have to get used to it
@@lieutenantcandlewax Yes, as I said a fine transportation appliance.
I think that it is quite different than other Japanese cars. The Interior feels very good and built quality is good, leather and so on, even when you compare it so plastics of volkswagen.
Not ugly, it’s a thing of beauty.
This vehicle shines off the road where no reviewer dares to take it... Thats quite sad!
On road its also better than the competition
Give Driving Sports TV a watch.
Looks like some kind of Opel.
I love Subaru, but god it’s ugly
Totally agree, it's hideous.
What Subarus have mostly been for ten years.
I think its even more Beautiful than most SUV
well you're gonna have to get used to it because this car is everywhere
SuperSupraRacer The official ride of Karen.
Subaru interiors are completely obsolete since many years, they are stuck in 2009
I like it.
It’s all subjective. I have a black forester and in my opinion it is a thing of beauty.
So much orange peel...come on, Subaru
1 mile battery what a joke totally useless and more expensive!
I think they hold the title for making ugly car in the business
Horrible car / very ugly :(
Woah what happened!!!!
Damnn I almost reported this video as a harassment how ugly this car is !!
Gees this is the ugliest car I’ve seen this year and probably every other year
Hyundai Veloster, any Nissan, most Toyotas, most Mercedes, anything from Cadillac or Chrysler would be uglier than this.
