Screwball Comedies were a genre all to themselves in the thirties and early forties, characterized by chaotic situations, misunderstandings, and sharp witty dialogue that flew by so fast the audience (and the characters) had a hard time keeping up. Actresses like Katherine Hepburn, Carole Lombard, and Jean Arthur were the original "Manic Pixie Dream Girls"
Barbara Streisand made a great "manic pixie" in What's Up Doc." There are later attempts to continue the genre, but that was the last great one. I put My Man Godfrey and Philadelphia story as two of the best from its golden era.
@@vapoet Good point. I never thought of What's Up Doc as a screwball comedy before, but it fits, and it's hilarious! I wonder if 9 to 5, Ruthless People, and Outrageous Fortune would count as screwball comedies?
And Cary Grant said he based his portrayal of the professor on the great Harold Lloyd, one of our all-time fantastic stars and filmmakers starting in the silent era. Part of the Big 4 of early film comic geniuses, Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Roscoe Arbuckle and Harold Lloyd. You can't go wrong with any film of any one of them, or with Cary Grant. Really loved your reaction!😆
This is one of those movies that for so long if I ever came across it on TV I’d have to sit and watch the whole thing. That is until I bought it digitally. Just love this movie. If you enjoyed it you should watch What’s Up Doc? which was inspired by this movie and has Barbara Streisand playing the Hepburn part. A hysterical gem of a movie - both of them!
All right, you got yourself a new Patron. One of my favorite movies! Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn are my all time favorite classic era actors. You must see The Philadelphia Story!
I looove Cary Grant. My personal favourites with him are - Charade - Arsenic and Old Laces - That touch of Mink This one is definitely a real classic though
THIS was a wonderful surprise! Thanks, Kathy Ice 💕 That's my cousin Kate playing Susan and this was directed by Howard Hawks, one of my favorite directors ever. He's done all kinds of genres, but they're all about sexual tensions and finding the right love with all sorts of double entendres despite the genre whether it be comedy or Westerns or film noir. I need to see how to join this Tier 5 level so I can make some requests. That fast talking, overlapping dialogues is a staple of Hawks' directorial style which he brought in to sound films because despite it's totally zany quality here he found was more natural.. The next film.you should see by him is called HIS GIRL FRIDAY, which I like more than this one and is in my top 100 best American films list. ❤ and vest wishes, Sam!
"Bringing Up Baby" is THE screwball comedy, the pinnacle of the form, and as hysterically funny now as it was in 1938. Grant and Hepburn were a perfect team.
If you like this movie, you owe it to yourself to watch WHAT'S UP, DOC? with Ryan O'Neal, Barbra Streisand, and Madeline Kahn. It's a tribute to this movie and sort of a sequel/remake in spirit. And absolutely hilarious.
Ooooh what a great choice of movies to react to! And yeah, that "I just went GAY all of a sudden" is a classic line. It's amazing how a movie made 83 years ago still has the power to make us laugh. Both Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn had long, illustrious careers, and watching this nutty movie towards the beginning of their stardom is still a delight. Another classic film from this era I would recommend for some subversive LGBTQ themes is Queen Christina, starring the stunning Greta Garbo.
One of my dads favorites (and mine too.) The suave and smooth Cary Grant playing a total dork was comedy gold. And the great Kate was always amazing, really showing off her versatility here. My second favorite film of hers after The African Queen. And the first time the term “gay” was used as synonymous with “homosexual” on film….and it’s fucking high-larious.
The director Howard Hawks didn't think much of the movie, regretting that every single character was some kind of nut without any kind of normal person to react to it all like the average viewer would, and his other comedies like His Girl Friday and Ball of Fire very much show how he tried to correct that. But its becoming regarded as such a comedy classic shows that most people disagreed with him.
Great screwball comedy. Katherine Hepburn has a great body of work worth checking out. I highly recommend the 1949 movie Adams Rib with her and Spencer Tracy. A modern screwball comedy to watch is 1972's What's Up Doc with Barbara Streisand and Ryan O'Neal. Great reaction.
I love these old madcap screwball comedies. In addition to the ones already mentioned, My favorite Wife, with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne and the remake with Doris Day and James Garner, called Move Over, Darling are great fun.
This movie is hilarious! The double entendres were a great way to add dirtiness to a movie that wasn’t allowed to be sexually suggestive. Uptight man engaged to Miss Swallows loses his bone, meets a woman who steals his (golf) balls, who eventually makes him lighten up, enjoy life and helps him find his bone! The antics are crazy but Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn are comedy gold! One of the great comedies that people still rip off to this day.
Kathy, you legend! Thank you for the request! Bringing Up Baby is absolutely absurd and I love every minute of it, and how quotable it is. "When a man is wrestling a leopard in the middle of a pond, he's in no position to run" is a particular favorite. I agree with everyone recommending Arsenic and Old Lace, His Girl Friday, The Philadelphia Story, and Holiday (the most overlooked of the Cary Grant/Katherine Hepburn pairings but still a solid movie). Arsenic and Old Lace is the most screwball of the recommendations I'd say with the manic energy and absurd situations, but it is very (and kind of darkly) funny. His Girl Friday is sharp and fast, some of the fastest dialogue put on screen--you've got to pay attention to keep up with the wit and barbs. It's not as manic but it is a bit outrageous and the leads have great chemistry. The Philadelphia Story and Holiday are both more like straight comedy, with simpler plots but still with the witty dialogue and wonderful chemistry between Grant and Hepburn. James Stewart in The Philadelphia Story is a great addition, and the level of talent on display in that film is a gift to us all. I saw at least one commenter say we've got to keep pushing your "oldest" viewings back and I'm going to keep pushing for some Buster Keaton!! (The General, Our Hospitality, Steamboat Bill Jr, The Navigator, Battling Butler, The Cameraman...I could recommend all of these for different reasons. I don't know if I'll ever be able to get in on the guaranteed request tier, so I'll keep bringing these up and hope others join the recommendation bandwagon on these!)
hell yes!!! Thanks a million for not turning your nose up at doing such and older film ❤ I actually Sing the featured song "I cant give you anything but love Baby" to my children when they are crying at night.
Wow! You're getting into some classics!! I LOVE this movie!! But then again Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn are my favorite actors of all time so there's that! Lol You should try The Philadelphia Story!
One of my favorite screwball comedies! So few reactors do the older Hollywood movies, thanks for being adventurous and appreciating this time period. If you like dark humor mixed with screwball comedy, I recommend Arsenic and Old Lace. If you watch it, the less you know going into it, the better!
Such a wonderful screwball comedy! Kate and Cary ALWAYS worked beautifully together and they had such lovely chemistry! And Cary was always so suave and posh, yet did comedy so well. And Katherine is an absolute LEGEND!
Before this came out, critics were saying this would be the end of Katherine Hepburn's career. Not only did the film NOT end her career, it's now considered the best example of screwball comedy. Hepburn wasn't sure how to play the character, so the producers brought in Walter Catlett to show her how to be "funny" by doing all of her lines. She loved how much Catlett helped her that she insisted on him being in the film. He plays Constable Slocum.
Now that you have seen this brilliant film, I have another recommendation. “What’s Up Doc?” “What’s Up, Doc?”, was directly influenced by the classic Howard Hawks comedy Bringing Up Baby.
YES! Cary Grant - YES!! Katharine Hepburn YES YES!! Golden Age stars for reasons. The comedic rhythms of Vaudeville that pre-date the invention of film. Incredible.
This film actually played a quite significant role in LGBT history, as Cary Grant's improvised line that he's crossdressing "Because I just went gay all of a sudden" is popularly believed to be what first caused people to start associating the word "gay" with homosexuality. It helps that Grant himself was suspected of having several affairs with men, though nothing has ever been confirmed.
It wasn't confirmed because it's not true. Grant has repeatedly denied being gay, all of his ex-wives have denied, everyone who knew him well denied it. Grant even successfully sued Chevy Chase for calling him gay on tv. Grant didn't think of it as an insult, but he did not want to be labeled as something he was not.
Hawks actually remade it to great degree with his movie MAN'S FAVORITE SPORT? in 1964. He wanted Grant and Kate agin, but Grant didn't want to do it so he got Rock Hudson and the wonderful Paula Prentiss.
I love your reactions to the classics like this. This is my favourite film era, and it makes me so happy to watch other people enjoying these movies, too. 💜

Katharine Hepburn had never done comedy and got a lot of help from Walter Catlett, the actor playing the annoying constable/sheriff. "Barefoot in the Park" (1960's) is another delightful romantic comedy starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Also try to find "The Thin Man" series starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as an unconventional couple who wind up solving crimes along with their Wire Terrier named Asta.

Yes! Please watch Arsenic and Old Lace 🙏
You can not beat Cary Grant in a comedy. Monkey Business and Arsenic and Old Lace )
This is why they called this type movie "screwball comedies".
Love your reaction to one of my favorite movies. Please react to more classic movies like these.
You've got the guts to review an old B&W movie, which is more than most "reaction" channels that just do Marvel Comics reviews.
I'll happily react to any type of movie! That plus I love the MCU so I've seen all of their movies haha
Consider His Girl Friday with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. To this day considered the fasted dialog movie ever made and a brilliant screwball comedy.
One of my favorite movies.
Check out "What's up, Doc?" 😎
Funniest movie I’ve ever seen, each and every time I see it.
