  • Harvey Keitel plays Charlie, working his way up the ranks of a local mob. Amy Robinson is Teresa, the girlfriend his family deems unsuitable because of her epilepsy. And in the starmaking role that won Best Supporting Actor Awards from the New York and National Society of FIlm Critics, De Niro is Johnny Boy, a small-time gambler in big-time debt to loan sharks.
    This is a story Martin Scorsese lived, a semi-biographical tale of the first-generation sons and daughters of New York's Little Italy.

    If I'm not mistaken, "Mean Streets is the move that put Robert De Niro. Harvey Keitel, and Martin Scorsese in the mainstream, and deservedly so. I think it's one of the most innovative and intelligently made movies of all time.

    It’s very telling that “Mean Streets” - once considered one of Scorsese’s undisputed classics - is now underrated. A generation raised on his collaborations with DiCaprio and the gloss and plutocracy of post-1980 America seemingly can’t appreciate how honest, realistic, and personal this film really is. People today prefer lies. It’s sad, because at 42, I’ve watched that change happen. But, it’s our way as a culture. Why spend your time watching a rich, compelling film when you can watch “superhero vs villain part 4 billion”?

      As someone in the younger generation, who tries to get people into movies like this, many passive moviegoers are completely willing to get into older films or even good films coming out now. Its just theaters rarely screen older classics anymore and also Disney's movies (especially MCU) take up so much of the advertising and poster space and screening room of the theater. The only thing recently to get a lot of younger people to use their brain when watching movies was when Warner Bros made a bad Taxi Driver ripoff and slapped the Joker and Batman into it.

    • @spb7883
      @spb7883 4 года назад

      goobius the traffic cone Then tell the other younger folks to start exploring. It’s the greatest gift we have. I got into film largely from books. I would leaf through a film guide and see what was rated highly and start watching. As I suggested in my first post, the odds were stacked against ME IN THE 90s as someone who would be interested in this film. I didn’t watch it on television. I had to *look* for it.

      @@spb7883 that's what I try to do, a lot of gen z and millennial have strange attention spans because they can binge watch a season of a show but cant watch a 4 hour movie like Once Upon A Time In America, I try to ease people into it with easier to understand films or more exciting films like Goodfellas is a good starter on getting into movies or just Scorsese in general.

    • @spb7883
      @spb7883 4 года назад

      goobius the traffic cone Very true, and kudos to you for trying. At the risk of sounding redundant, I find the Gen Z and Millennial characteristics you describe alternately fascinating and frightening. I can’t understand why multiple generations have gone down this road of bad quality. Perhaps it’s merely a matter of conformity.

    You look at this movie now and it's just so bad and poorly acted yet was DeNiro's and Scorcese's big break.
