- This is the story of our yellow 2004 Kenworth W900L with a 120" Aero1 Sleeper. It is an awesome truck but our journey to get it there was a nightmare. We will give you a tour of the truck and some pointers of what to do and what not to do when buying a truck. #kenworthw900 #trucking #truckdriver #Bigbunk #aerodyne

The first used truck I bought cost me approximately $20,000 in the first year and a half I owned it, the dealer I bought the truck from covered some of the repairs, and what they didn’t cover they gave me a hell of a discount, I was 23 years old, the owner of the dealership felt horrible, I’ll never forget how those folks helped me out.
Once I got the bugs out that truck ran like velvet and I got years of great service.
That's great. Like I said in the video, Bad things are going to happen, it's part of life. It's how the situation is handled that is what matters. It sounds like you had a great dealership experience and will probably never forget them. That is how things should be..
Damn!! I’ve got a 1993 with a 3406B that has 70k on a complete rebuild. I am selling it for 65K. ALL PAPERWORK OF EVERYTHING DONE FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS! 8 new air bags, u-joints, carrier bearings, power steering box, thrust plate, BullyDog stage II Turbo, rebuild, Harmonic Balancer, alternator, Injection Pump w/AFRC and all attachments, radiator, etc. Too much to list. Runs like new with a straight 15 speed and 3:70 rears.
A 19 yr old truck will run like a new truck if kept up. We have a fleet that ranges from 1994 - 2006, all which run regional / long haul. I expect nothing less than like new condition. You take care the truck, the truck will take care of you. Don't cut corners when it comes to maintenance. It will cost you later
Absolutely!!
Absolutely..i have a 85 W900B and the 1st owner i heard got fired because of lack of maintenance on the truck,i bought it and undid the crap that was done to it and i still have it after 23yrs and its still earning 😁
Amen .not rocket science.
Great interview
That's my dream truck. I love the yellow. Beautiful home away from home.
Right on!
Great story brother!!! SOOOO TRUE!!!!
Thank you for sharing an awesome story and through all your trials and tribulations you stayed a man about it stood your ground and still kept your ethi got nothing but respect for your buddy
I appreciate that
I have a 1997 w900l I keep it up in shape and today I still drive it it drive like a charm
Glad to hear it. If you take care of these old trucks they will run like a top for you!!
Beautiful truck!
Thank you!!
give you a a for all bs you went threw nice ride keep her rollin good luck
Thanks, will do!
Great video
Good information. God bless you.
🙏🙏🙏
Thanks a lot
For some reason I love this video, your attitude is so calm even with all the problems the truck came with.
Thank you, it's been a long road but I have really come to love this truck.
Great and all true 💯
Thats a nice looking truck
It's also easy to overlook things on something this big with so much to check....if your doing a real through check it should almost take 2 days to 100 percent completly look over everything..we can't always take 2 days to look over a truck that you might not even buy but love the content keep it up brotha...
You are right. And a lot of this was my fault for falling in love with it too fast lol. I would have known about the engine if I had followed my own advise and just sent in an oil sample.
Good video. Seems like a nice enough person.
Thank you!
I bought a 98 t600 had 21k worth of problems in the 1st yr & a half!
It was a baptism by fire 🔥
It sucks but I hope you have a great truck now. The T600 is one of my favorite trucks ever
Should definitely shout out the business you bought it from. Sounds like a stand up place that I’d do business with. I’ve had many issues with the truck I bought 6 months ago. Trans, injectors, frame cracked(had to of cracked before I bought and never saw it behind the spring hanger) and then finally the engine needed rebuilt due to low liners.
You are right. The company was Road Dog Truck Sales. They are part of CAG truck capital. CAG has financed many trucks for me and has become what I consider to be a key part of my business. My original Finance "associate" I guess you would call him, Brian Poole, has become a friend as well as my account manager, Donna Dunlap. I am pretty sure that after this experience I will never shop around for financing, I know who I need to be partners with. This was a bad situation and they had my back the whole way, now I have an awesome truck
@@truckingresources4240 awesome. Will definitely keep them in mind if I make it through the winter
@@truckingresources4240 we all need somebody to have our backs at one time or another. Glad you have them. Wish I did.
Shout-out to Road Dog Truck Sales
I drove for 50yrs. Retired now. A lot of components to trucking that steering wheel holders can't keep up with. Only a good trucker. Nice ride. If I had that one I probably wouldn't come home every 6 months. I used to do that in the early 70s. Ride safe boys an girls.
It's great to hear...where do you live? We'd love to let you take it for a spin.
Nice LARGECAR K-DUBB!!!!!😎🔊🏆💎
Thank you!!
@@truckingresources4240 Yezz-Sirr!!!!!! Both Trks are AWESOME!!!! PACCAR PRIDE LARGECARS 🏆🔊💎😎 K-DUBBS & PETES
Sound just about right..... I'm in the same boat
I wish you luck. Hopefully, you can push through. The nice thing is that once you are done you will know everything about that truck.
@Trucking Resources I'm at a shop right now doing king pins tie rod ends new tires alignment etc..... up to $2k right.... thanxxx I needed those words of encouragement........
wow ! so sorry you had to go through all that ! but like you said now it s done, you happy, driver happy and it s rollin ! I m retired now 66 and lived in trucks for 35 years !been o/o for the first 2 1/2 years from 1986 to 89 them sold the truck and went as a driver for the rest of my trucking life ! LoL Kenworth was my favorite truck but of course i loved Pete too ! Actually, the truck on my logo was that one i bought in early 1986 ! was a 1985 R model mack 350 econodyne ! would ve been perfect for USA driving tandem trailers ! But in Canada we haul heavy and it was a 15 speed and geared to go very fast, no power ! LoL But it was my first truck and i never consulted any experience people before bying it ! I figured if i bye a heavy-duty truck i wouldn t have any problems ! Wrong ! LoL i put 35,000 $ in 2 years on that truck and it was indeed a heavy-duty truck ! Camel-back suspension, sleeper smaller than a coffin, no cruise control no air seat but that was ok i never put air in the seat ! Well this must be the longest comment ever done ! drive safe ! over n out......🤠
I love hearing the stories. The R model is one of the most iconic trucks ever in my opinion. I think they represented quality and hard work.
Nice truck but sounds like it was a real Lemon 🍋 when ya got it. It is a nice truck and I have seen many of times before it was Yellow. Good luck with it.
It was but it is getting back to it's original quality. The original owner has showed me a lot of pictures from it in 04 and I can't wait to show them in the next video.
I run a lot on Hwy 50 and 33 and I use to see that truck sitting at a truck tire shop on 33 right before 50 . I think that’s who painted the truck. Always wondered what happened to it . Sorry that happened to you man , happens a lot these days. Can trust a man’s word no more.
That would be the area it was in. It's in pretty good shape now and only getting better. If you see it rolling down the road give a shout out
Nice rig finest rig money can buy!!
Thank you!!

I've actually seen that truck here in Memphis Tennessee it was probably around late 2016 into early 2017 they had stopped off at a grocery store here.
That's pretty cool, I've been hearing from a lot of people that remember it.
If there's anything I've learned in my career so far: don't EVER trust anyone to have done their job. It's a mostly independent job for a reason, and paying someone for their services is no guarantee they will even do what you asked them to do. I know this first hand - a dot inspection you pay for will often not catch what you sent it in for.
Remember seeing that truck for sale. Didn't look all that great and pretty ugly. I don't blame you for your mistakes. Cool looking truck with it being a W900L and the big sleeper. I can see that you really wanted it. Be safe!
Yeah, it was for sale for quite a while, that should have been a sign.
@@truckingresources4240 Lol! You live and learn.
Thumbnail on me is 1995 exhd Pete. Bought it new in 1995. One owner till the day I leave this world. Would run anywhere in this country that I can legally.
That's a beautiful Pete!!
They probably painted the steps black because they put those stainless tank covers on there. Well polished aluminum and stainless both give off a different TONE of metal. So they probably did that because they didnt match after the tank covers,
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It's a nice truck bud. All good rules, why do we all break them when we buy a truck, it's like a weakness.
You are right, there are a lot of simple things that I could have done.
IM 100% with you brother. I dont like the full fenders. I like the look of the raw tire, Plus makes it so much easier to inspect your tires. Not to mention ease when pulling certain trailers. I love the truck!
What did you to fix your head lights and get high beams??
I just had to hook them up. Simple job of connecting wires
I personally think you got big bunk eyes. Meaning it had a big bunk, you didn’t see anything else. I’ve seen this quite a few times. Sorry this happened to you, but 3rd party mechanics looking at things is a good idea. I have a big bunk and I’m also leased to the Star.
Good Luck
Lol that's fair. I get em too. My trucks got the Stratosphere sleeper and I told my bud who owns several trucks I like to be able to do jumping Jack's in the sleeper. His response - "If you're doing jumping Jack's in the sleeper, you're prolly not making any money".
Touché
You are exactly right about that. I fell in love with the truck and all of my rules went out the window lol.
I live in leesburg Florida was mechanic named Tim or billy
whats name of them.
No, his name is Mark. Doesn't have an actual shop. He does contract work. My dad lived in Leesburg for a long time. He used to park his truck at a storage place right along 27 south of town
Hi 👋 rob, this video popped up on my iPad and your tractor is the size of my yellow straight truck lol do you still have this tractor 😊
Hey Frank, Yes I do still have it. I drive the Pete and have a driver for the KW.
It all depends on the purchase price .
Yes look at paper work carefully, bought a wreck kenworth owner supplied paper work to insurance for engine work , l told ins co something is wrong because Cat c-13 has two turbos & all paperwork showed (3) turbos purchased. Called dealer name on receipts parts man said see # at top of receipt that is serial # for truck the quote was for , 1 number was for a KW other was for pete. look paper over careful & deduct core charges!!
Great advise, thank you so much
Forget everything and do some miles and everything will go smooth.
You are absolutely right. Thank you for the advise!!
nice video how much cost engine repair
The actual Platinum rebuild was 28k. We ended up spending 32k because of a lot of things we replaced since it was apart, turbo precooler, wiring harness, air to air, etc.
The former owner of this truck is on another channel saying this guy here is "a liar"; he's saying this guy tore this truck up!
I feel bad for you but lets be bluntly honest here, at the time you failed to do your due diligence, this experience has clearly enriched you.
Yes you are totally right. I never denied my fault in all of this but I still felt that the story had to get out.
Sounds like some of it is on you
For not checking lights and seatbelts for instance
Absolutely, that is what the whole video is about, making sure to check these things before buying
Were you looking at the truck with Rose coloured glasses?
That sure sounds about right!!
@@truckingresources4240 sorry but it was a bit of self spanking.
I am in Australia and bought a K104 Aerodyne.
I fell in love with it and believed the salesman bullshit.
Found out that 750,000 km turned out to be in excess of 4 million km
Sure its a negative thing that you had to do all that with the motor and all, But many negatives lead to positives, And the positive is .. Now you KNOW you did it all from scratch.. So shes got a clean bill of health you are 100% sure about. So thats the positive.
You are right!! I know this truck inside and out now.
I bet you bought it from Road Dog in PA
It's an 18+ year old, 1.2 million mile truck. That's a crap shoot no matter how well a truck is maintained(or not). It comes down to your ROI. If you can run it for 5 years with minimal downtime and repairs, well worth it. As an aside, back in 1985 my dad traded a 1981 White Road Boss that looked great with about 500k miles in on a 1985 Freightliner COE. He had the old Silver Series in the Road Boss rebuilt the year before and had about 100k on the rebuild. It had a 100k warranty and it was just out. Anyway, we get home and as we walk inside the house, the phone was ringing. It was the Columbus, OH Freightshaker dealer he just traded the truck into. Mind you, they took the White gor a test drive and had one of their mechanics go through it and give it a thumbs up. It THREW A ROD being driven into their back lot. We had absolutely no idea anything was wrong with it. My dad just wanted a newer truck with a warranty and more power. The dealer demanded my dad return the new Freightliner. He declined. We felt bad for the blown engine but we acted in good faith, there was no deception. The Freightliner had a 350 hp Cummins Big Cam 3 and it pulled great. So much better than that Detroit oil leaking boat anchor. Anyway, the previous owner most likely would not have any idea that engine would go teets up almost 100k miles later. And I'd bet he paid for new bearings. If a small, independent shop bought a rebuild kit for it, there would most likely not be a factory warranty. I went on to quit driving and became a Diesel mechanic and have since retired. I'd pay a pretty penny to have that old Road Beast back. I loved it. Slow or not, it was the first truck I drove and it made me feel like a real trucker. Good luck with your W900. It still looks good.
That's an awesome story and you are right...it is a crap shoot. The more stories that I hear after posting this video the more I am happy with the truck. Yes, bad things happen but I have an awesome truck now after a lot of elbow grease
With correct, CONSTANT maintenance it could have 4 million miles and absolutely not be a Rat Trap of death
I need a Peterbilt tractor trailer truck
you seem like you would be a good boss man now do you need a driver😇
Thank you. I do not need a driver at this point but thank you for your interest
What the weight on this truck
I feel horrible saying this but I forget the exact truck weight. I do know that pulling a 53' LS dry van trailer and full of fuel it weighs 39,800. We try to keep it loaded under 38k
This is a B model W900 very rare W900
Dude, who doesn't check all the lights ? Wipers , heater,ac
I mean , you went to buy a real truck a Kenworth w900 wearing a second best peterbilt hat. You were just asking for trouble..pete guys always do that around real trucks. They forget to check lights.
Star struck.
LOL that's a good one. I actually have one of each and like different things about both of them. I definitely couldn't pick a favorite.
First mistake is leasing too landstar
I've been with Landstar for 10 years now. I'm pretty happy with them but I've been lucky enough to get hooked up with some great agents.
Someone needs to go to jail for installing new brake shoes on a broken brake drum. 09:45
Amen....there may be some ongoing litigation...
Looks like an Ohio truck sales rig...sounds like it too!!
Was going to say the same thing
It's funny you say that. I have so many friends that had horrible experiences with those guys that I never look at their trucks. You are right though, this was of the same quality as I hear most of theirs are.
American Force wheels are the best looking wheels out here by far they'll look way better than the crappy black wheels he had PS im the guy that absolutely hates black wheels on anything they look cheap
Honestly....this would be a great show truck not a work truck. To much maintenance (like an RV), heavy on the fuel costs and can only haul light loads.
Beautiful truck though!
You are right but that thing cost a lot of money to recoup lol
That’s “EXTREME”!!!
Laredo Houghston built an awesome ride. Too bad another fella trashed it.
Do you know Laredo?
Jeff, If you do know Laredo please let him know that I can't with to do a video with him. The truck is an awesome build and I'd love to talk with him. I haven't talked to him since before I was getting ready to buy it.
Why would that truck not be suitable for pulling dry vans?
It is suitable, that's what we do with it.
@@truckingresources4240 Around 1:17 of the video, you explained that you pull dry vans and that the truck is not suitable for that. Or, did you mean, that the yellow fenders were not suitable for pulling dry vans?
Oh ok. Yes, we felt the full fiberglass fenders werent suitable. I understand that there are those that do it but we felt we didn't want to have to worry about those big fenders, we were thinking more functionality over show
@@truckingresources4240 Then, I just did not understand what you said. I thought you meant that the truck as a whole was not suitable for dry vans. Silly me! 🤪
too bad you can't take it into cali no more
😂who even gives a shit about Cali and their communist regime 😅
We don't care too much about Cali but it does cause some problems when we are near the border. I know that there is a 1000 mile exemption but I haven't looked into it enough yet.
@@truckingresources4240 yes you're right, and I'ma tell you something and a lot of guys don't know this, but if they do, good. California has a registry that exempts trucks or companies that don't regularly run into their state.
who ever painted it used the wrong paint. You can see the paint chipping allover.
You are totally right!!
Ya no paper work = - $50,000 for an out of frame
32k but yes you are right
If I see him out there holler at him pretty cool truck
I promise he will answer back
Unfortunately.. there are TONS of rolling deathtrap Half Arse O/O trucks like this on the road. I know one BAD KW locally that the guy brags about never doing maintenance like it's something he's proud of 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Some how this dude has a little confusion going on! You can't be wearing a Peterbilt ball cap and drive a K whopper. That's just wrong!
Lol, I actually drive a peterbilt. I have a driver for the KW. I feel like I own the best of both worlds
Never add it up. Just don’t.
Amen, that's some good advice!!
You bought a used truck not a new truck
You are totally right. It was a rough road but we dealt with it
Truck drivers are truck drivers ... not business people , truck drivers.
Can anyone learn anything from that statement ?
Truck drivers are truck drivers…are not business people. I have been around truck drivers and truck owners who were both. Very successful also. So that statement is stupid. Can you understand? I can explain it to you, but I can’t comprehend it for you.
No shit
Ohio truck sales haha let me guess
Definitely a good guess but no. I've always stayed away from that place.
I got my first truck and am just about to start work as an owner. 2015 Western Star 4900EX. Hope I'm not making a vid like this lol 🍺🍺🍺
But nice work and nice truck I've always been a huge KW fan. Nice name, Scott 🍺 maybe I'll seeya out there.
That's awesome Scott. I love the Star Cars although I've never owned one. I wish you a ton of luck and feel free to reach out if there's anything you need.
@@truckingresources4240 Youre a gentleman and a scholar. Thank ya sir 🍺 After nearly 20 years as a company man, I feel like a greenhorn all over again!
How did you have the money to do all the repairs.
I didn't. While the truck was down my driver and i ran team to make some money while the kw was in the shop
I would have taken the truck back and gotten my money back.
I guess it all worked out
This was entertaining- but is this guy actually trying to blame other people?- he's driving a 19-year-old truck! And he is pointing out a little nicks that he himself should have checked that he admits he didn't check --does he honestly expect a 19 year old truck to run like a new truck I mean seriously?- LOL LOL
Sounds like you the one that sold that truck🤨🤭
I can assure you that this video is mainly to tell others all of the mistakes that I made. Basically, I fell in love with the truck and then started breaking my own rules instead of being thorough. For example, a simple oil sample should have told me that the engine wasn't new. If I had just turned on all the switches to check them etc, etc, etc.
@@truckingresources4240 beautiful truck.. we all make mistakes when you look at a truck you love and want lol 😂.
Did you even watch the video? This was instructional, and he took accountability every step of the way and was more than fair.
