  • Evening Hymn: Te lucid ante terminum
    Henry Balfour Gardiner (1877-1950)
    The Choir of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine - New York City
    Bruce Neswick, conductor
    James D. Wetzel, organist
    Recorded live at Saint John the Divine during Evensong.
    To thee before the close of day,
    Creator, we pray that,
    with thy constant clemency,
    thou wouldst be our guard and keeper now.
    From all evil dreams,
    and from terrors of the night;
    withhold from us our foe,
    that we may know no corruption.
    Grant, almighty Father,
    through Jesus Christ our Lord,
    who reigns for ever
    with the Holy Ghost. Amen.
    Saint Ambrose (c. 340-397); Office hymn at Compline

    This anthem, performed by the Cathedral Choir, (disclosure: I was a choirboy there for five years), is probably my favorite of all anthems. I was lucky enough to hear it live the last time I attended Evensong there.
