While I chase a Mistry rough idle with no error codes on my 2000 GC Martin's videos help me to not only locate the parts but also getting them changed with some extra tips along the way. As a owner of a 4.7 I will be following your content. Thank you.
Yeah if you're 4.7 is equipped with an EGR it would be located on the driver's side cylinder head, all the way toward the back. Between the valve cover and the intake manifold.
Adding the updated PCV system is recommend when possible to prevent sludge and excess oil burning/blow-by. You can change the oil fill, and remove the PCV valves on the heads, then the new system is a direct fit with the updated tubes. This was part of the factory's update to address sludge and oil burning. Heat is also the enemy of these 4.7's keeping them cool and breathing goes a long way to extending their service life. I have 3 4.7's including one HO I'm installing in a 02 Jeep, the previous one failed due to heat, lack of PCV (sludge) and an improperly functioning power steering driven cooling fan. any one of or a combination of all 3 issues are what kill 4.7's more often than not, provided the oil is changed regularly during its life. Keep 'em cool and clean inside, they last forever with proper maintenance performed regularly!
Always quality content from Martin. I was actually searching for your video about the PCV upgrade and found this video. My 4.7L WJ is leaking oil onto the Y-pipe and I need to get it fixed. I thought is was the valve covers, but I'm starting to think I have an oil leak in the PCV system. I replaced both valve cover gaskets a while back (very carefully) but they still leaked. At least I thought it was the valve covers...
On the 2000 4.7 why would the hose on the back/top of the valve covers going into plastic pvc pipes on both sides have what I can tell is antifreeze but the cylinders have nearly same compression and passed both pressure tests through the spark plug and radiator ?. I have had a issue with water disappearing without leaks or in the crank case or exhaust
I have a 4.7L HO in my 2004 WJ Overland. Am I correct that there is no PCV valve in the HO engine? I can't find it if there is one. There is nothing attached to the oil fill neck on my 4.7L HO.
Thanks Dan, 😊 Yes I thought it was quite a creative way of using a spark plug boot as well too bad they just didn't cut off the top of the PCV valve It would've worked great.
Ohh man. Now I can’t remember if I changed mine last winter or not. I for sure bought one. I think I did replace it but I might do it again. I keep finding that 4.7 sludge in the full tube. I had bought a mopar one too.

According to my dealer, my 2006 Commander 4.7 requires a very expensive metal PCV valve that looks very different than yours. I'm guessing that it supersedes the cheaper plastic valve that you are using, possibly due to reliability issues. Hey MartinBuilt Can you make a video for replacing the: crankcase breather hose assembly on a 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L V8 Part number: 94364GB I can't see what kind if connectors the hose elbows connect to back there. The middle one connects to the resonator air box on the driver side and two connect in the back down behind the hood. My WJ is 21 years old and I've broke several plastic tubes and connectors related to the PCV valve and breather tube due to it being very hard and brittle. I'm afraid to yank it off and find the connectors are plastic that break on removal even with Blaster silicone spray
Great to see removed my 2002 Wj valve and it was full of gunge ordered a new one. Trying to figure out why it doesn't like starting first crank when motor is hot. Any ideas? Map maybe? No fault codes.
could be leaky injectors and it is flooding the engine and then drys out after a while. 🤔 I hate when it doesn't give you a code. 🙁 Currently dealing with a running rich situation with no codes. 🤬
Fuel pump and filter failure are common on these, cold start will be OK, but a hot start might drag on forever trying to start or not at all, if fuel pressure isn't over 45 pounds (normal hot and cold is 52) 50-55 psi average. If fuel pressure bleeds off after a key on/key off cycle, or after cranking the engine for a few seconds, the regulator in the tank fails to achieve and hold approx. 50 pst fuel pressure, the unit(s) are failed, and the regulator in the fuel filter isn't enough. This is why I change both, pump assy. and filter at the same time, both regulators work in concert. Fuel pressure is the biggest issue with a long-hard start especially hot, when there are no codes and the Crankshaft Position Sensor is verified to be working correctly. My '99 JGC had that issue last month. A new Wix filter and Delphi pump solved it 100%. I had NO codes before changing the pump, a fuel pressure test revealed the issue and verified the repair.
Yeah, I'm actually surprised that this engine didn't smoke or leak oil with the PCV valve plugged with that spark plug boot the previous owner had used. I will eventually change it over to the newerstyle PCV valve located on the cylinder head, and change the oil filled tube as well.
has anyone had issues when reinstalling pcv valve that it will click down, turn a click in the direction it needs to go but won’t rotate the rest of the way like at 4:16? dont want to break anything and i can feel the valve flexing when i try to put too much pressure
if it's after market it might have some flashing or something wrong with the part itself stopping it from aligning properly. You could try cleaning out the hole and dabbing a little oil on the o'rings on the new one to make it easier to rotate.

Hey Martin! So I have a quick question... I have a 99 Jeep WJ with the 4.7L, and out of curiosity I pulled off the two hoses on the back of the cylinder heads for the PCV system, while the engine was running, and I felt no pressure what so ever coming out of either of them.
